WEC 36 MAIN CARD FIGHT RECAPS:

WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah ” The California Kid” Faber vs. Mike Brown (145-pound title fight)

Fight recap: Mike Brown handed Urijah Faber his first career loss in the WEC, and in turn took his 145 pound title tonight with a brutal first round technical knockout. There was nothing out of the ordinary early on in the bout, but as the two settled in, Brown’s power advantage became apparent. As he usually does, Faber tried to use his athleticism to counter the power advantage, but this time, it back fired on him. As he was attempting a spinning back elbow strike, he walked right into a perfectly timed short right hook from Brown that crumpled him immediately. Brown jumped on him and pounded him out for the win. For Mike Brown, this was obviously the biggest win of his career, and he is a legitimate champion for the WEC. He’ll be a difficult match up for any challenger that comes calling. For Faber, how he rebounds from this loss will be huge for him as a fighter. He’s a guy that fights with a ton of confidence. He can’t afford to lose that edge on account of this loss. It will be interesting to see how he comes back from this.

Final result: Mike Brown defeats Urijah ” The California Kid” Faber via technical knockout (strikes) in round one for the WEC Featherweight Championship

WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho vs. Chael Sonnen (Three-round 185-pound nontitle fight)

Fight recap: Paulo Filho continues to prove his career is on a steady decline. He had no answer for Sonnen’s length or reach advantage in this fight. He looked disinterested and bored at times, and he never really showed any aggression. For the most part, neither fighter looked intent on trying to finish the fight at anytime, and the end result was an uneventful three round decision. Towards the end, the match resembled more of a sparring session than a fight that was originally set to be for a world title. In the end Sonnen did just enough to win the fight on the judges scorecards, but there was nothing impressive about this fight.

Final result: Chael Sonnen defeats WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho via unanimous decision

Jens “Little Evil” Pulver vs. Leonard Garcia (145-pound limit)

Fight recap: As expected both guys were looking to stand and trade in this fight, and with the power these two possess, it’s not surprising it didn’t last very long. Garcia was throwing some serious heat with his punches tonight. Every punch had knockout intentions. It was like he was content on just lowering his head and standing toe to toe with the former UFC lightweight champ, and the strategy worked out perfectly for him. Pulver never had a chance to get comfortable in the fight because of Garcia’s relentless attack. The Greg Jackson trainee has put together two impressive first round stoppages against world class talent now, and it looks like he’s a real threat to the featherweight title holder, whether that be Urijah Faber or Mike Brown after tonight.

Final result: Leonard “Bad Boy” Garcia defeats Jens “Little Evil” Pulver via technical knockout (strikes) in round one

-end-

Jake Rosholt vs. Nissen Osterneck (185-pound limit)

Fight recap: Osterneck came out with a flurry of punches to start the fight, and he looked to have a clear advantage in the stand up. But it wasn’t long before the former national champion collegiate wrestler Jake Rosholt turned to his bread and butter and started working the takedowns and the ground and pound. He controlled most of the first round, but all the clinching and wrestling clearly took it’s toll on both fighters. In the second round the two tired fighters threw all caution to the wind and decided to turn the fight into a slug fest. Midway through the round Rosholt looked to be in deep trouble. Osterneck was putting everything he had into trying to finish the fight, but Rosholt proved his toughness once more and somehow found a way to turn the tides again. Once he got back to the top position on the ground, Osterneck had no cardio left, and Rosholt pounded him out for the win. It was a sloppy fight between two young, inexperienced fighters, but a win is a win for Rosholt. With the WEC abandoning the 185 pound weight class, his next fight could potentially be in the UFC. If that’s the case, he’s got some improving to do.

Final result: Jake Rosholt defeats Nissen Osterneck via technical knock out (strikes) in round two
