Once a staple of the UFC heavyweight division, two-time champion Tim Sylvia (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Tim-Sylvia-1061) now makes his living outside the promotion he called home for years.

Sylvia (24-5), who turns 33 in March, recently spoke to Sherdog.com about his desire to return to prominence among the sport’s big men, his thoughts on newly crowned UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Brock-Lesnar-17522) and his relationship with UFC President Dana White.

Sherdog.com: How have you spent your off time since losing to Fedor?

Sylvia: I’ve been doing a lot of hunting and just training … been doing a lot of hunting. After my fight with Fedor, I went to Canada and did some bear hunting.

Sherdog.com: What did your loss to Fedor teach you?

Sylvia: I just know that I’m better than that. I just didn’t get a chance to get off. [I was] just kind of overconfident that I would impose my will, and he got off first and took me out of my game plan real quick.

Sherdog.com: With the International Fight League and EliteXC going out of business, do you feel any instability being with a new promotion like Affliction?

Sylvia: I just like to fight. I got into this ’cause I love fighting. I mean, if there was some ungodly reason that we didn’t get paid, I’d probably still be doing this. I’d just be working full time and still fighting. I love to fight. It’s fun. It’s the reward for training and stuff like that, so I want to get back on track and get some wins under my belt. I lost two in a row, and I don’t like doing that [laughs].

Sherdog.com: Are there any fights you want right now?

Sylvia: I want to fight everybody I’ve lost to, honestly. Fedor is the only guy out there that just straight up whooped my ass and beat me. I know I can beat the other guys that I’ve lost to. I believe I can beat Fedor. I’d definitely like to fight him. I definitely want to get on a win streak, put two or three wins together and then, if everything goes right, I can fight him down the road. Everyone else is all locked up in the UFC, so I won’t be able to get a rematch [with] Randy [Couture], [Antonio Rodrigo] Nogueira or Frank Mir (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Frank-Mir-2329). I just got to wait and see what happens with those guys’ career and mine, and maybe we’ll meet down the road.

Sherdog.com: You had the opportunity to challenge for the World Association of Mixed Martial Arts heavyweight championship when you fought Fedor. Do you feel that’s a valid title and did it mean anything to you?

Sylvia: No, it didn’t really mean much. WAMMA hasn’t been established yet. I think they’re doing the right things. Hopefully, they will be able to be established, but with some of the big shows, EliteXC and IFL, going under -- if they were going to recognize the belt -- it’s kind of hard to. If the UFC doesn’t recognize the belt as being number one, then it really isn’t, right?

The UFC is the big dog in town. I don’t think they have the number one heavyweight champion. Fedor is definitely the best heavyweight out there. But they do have one of the best 205ers. They definitely have the best middleweight. They definitely have the best [welterweight] and the best 155-pounder in the world. I think Robbie Lawler (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Robbie-Lawler-2245) is definitely a close second in the [middleweight] division, [and] they don’t have [him] yet. Other than that, they have all the divisions locked up.

Sherdog.com: Do you think Lawler’s a credible threat to UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Anderson-Silva-1356)?

Sylvia: You know, he’s the guy out there that I think he can beat Anderson. It’s the fact that when he gets hit, he gets pissed off, [and] he’s gonna get you.

Sherdog.com: What did you think of the Randy Couture (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Randy-Couture-166)-Brock Lesnar fight at UFC 91?

Sylvia: I was disappointed. I thought Randy was handing him his ass [in] the first round and the second round; he was controlling him, but Brock’s a monster, man. The punches he threw weren’t textbook, but he hit Randy in the right spot. And you know, being 285 pounds, you hit somebody, it hurts. [He] hit the right spot, and he was able to capitalize on it and jump on it and get the win.

Sherdog.com: Do you think Lesnar’s a good champion and ambassador for the sport?

Sylvia: I think it’s wrong for the sport. I don’t think he’s got enough credibility yet. Obviously anything can happen in the sport, and he beat a great guy, but s--t, he’s only had four fights. I think it hurts the UFC’s credibility a little bit just because you have a WWE wrestling star who’s the heavyweight champ.

Sherdog.com: Do you think the Lesnar hype is warranted?

Sylvia: Definitely. He is a hell of an athlete. Obviously he does get better and better each fight. He’s doing the right things to become a better fighter.

Sherdog.com: Is it disheartening to you to see someone with his lack of experience come in like that and get a title shot?

Sylvia: I just think they should have done some different things. I don’t think they should have [given] him a title shot. I think they should have let Nogueira and Frank fight, and the winner fights Randy. Give Brock the loser of that fight, and if he wins, it puts him in title contention or something. Give him a couple more fights or something. There’s nothing you can say or do now; he’s the heavyweight champion of the world.

Sherdog.com: As someone who fought both Frank Mir (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Frank-Mir-2329) and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Antonio-Rodrigo-Nogueira-1440), who wins their clash at UFC 92 on Dec. 27?

Sylvia: I think I’m gonna give Nogueira the slight edge just ’cause he has the better stand-up. I think for Frank to win he’s obviously gonna have to get it to the ground, but Nogueira’s never been submitted. Frank’s big strength is Nogueira’s best strength, and I think Nogueira is a little bit better at submissions. If I had to rank those guys in the world as being the best MMA fighters at submissions, I’m ranking Nogueira first and Frank second. I’m gonna take Nogueira.

Sherdog.com: Since you picked Nogueira to advance in the unofficial heavyweight tournament the UFC put together, will he beat Lesnar?

Sylvia: I do think Nogueira will beat Lesnar. Nogueira can take a hell of a beating, and before you know it, he ends up catching an arm or a choke. He beat Bob Sapp (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Bob-Sapp-4416) [and Mirko] “Cro Cop” [Filipovic]. I mean, the guy’s always around, always in the fight no matter what’s happened to him.

Sherdog.com: You’re managed by Monte Cox, and he runs Adrenaline MMA. Is fighting for that promotion on the table for you?

Sylvia: I’ve signed with them. I was supposed to have a fight Dec. 11, [but] he decided to put Ben [Rothwell] on the card and [have him] fight to keep Ben active, and then my fight fell through.

Sherdog.com: Can Adrenaline offer you those top 10 fights you desire?

Sylvia: They have to go out there and spend the money to get them. It’s not up to me. All I have to do is show up and fight. If they want to get the other guy and spend the money to get him, then so be it, but that’s not really up to me. I’m a free agent. I can fight wherever and whenever. If they want to put me on the card against a top 10 guy, then so be it. I’ll do it.

Dana White has been
critical of Tim Sylvia.

Sherdog.com: UFC President Dana White has been vocal about how he’s happy he got rid of you, he’s glad Fedor beat you, etc. How’s your relationship with White and the UFC?

Sylvia: To my face, he’s a great guy, super nice. Then I hear him say those things, so I don’t know. Dana’s just getting wrapped up in the publicity. I don’t know what his deal is [laughs]. He’s always nice to my face. I got no problem with Dana. I know he says stuff in business and stuff like that, but the type of person I am, if you have a problem with someone, say it to their face or don’t say it all. He hasn’t said anything to my face, so …

Sherdog.com: Could Dana White’s attitude deter you from coming back to the UFC?

Sylvia: From a business standpoint, I want to do what’s best for me, and right now, I’m much more appreciated outside of the UFC. I’m gonna do what’s best for me and secure my future. Do I want to be back in the UFC someday? Absolutely. It’s just, right now, there’s money to be made outside of the UFC, and that’s what I’m trying to do.

Sherdog.com: With Randy Couture (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Randy-Couture-166) and Jon Fitch (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Jon-Fitch-4865) citing lack of respect as an issue in their run-ins with Dana White, will you need to feel respected by him before coming back to the UFC?

Sylvia: I don’t know if Dana’s capable of doing that. He’s a businessman, and he’s all about making the UFC name bigger and lining his pockets. I just signed a video deal, and I got a great deal. The only way I’d ever come back to the UFC is … obviously, they’d have to request me.

I’ll sign a deal with them, and I won’t fight anywhere else, but they won’t be able to put me in a video game and me not get money out of it, you know what I’m saying? It’s cool being in a video game when you’re a rookie and new to the game, but when you’ve been around as much as I have, you know the video games make millions of dollars, and you don’t get any money for it? I don’t think so.

Sherdog.com: You’ve always faced an uphill battle in your relationship with fans. How do you want them to see you?

Sylvia: I’ve always fought the best -- Fedor, [Andrei] Arlovski. I still want to fight guys in the top 10. I’m still in the top 10. I think I am one of the best in the world; it’s just I always lose to one, two and three. I don’t think there’s anybody in the world that’s fought as many top 10 guys as I have.

Sherdog.com: Any last words for your fans?

Sylvia: Thank you for still sticking around [laughs]. I know I’m not in the UFC. I’m not in the highlights right now, but I still have a lot of fans that are sticking around. I’ve seemed to pick up some more fans after the Nogueira and Fedor fights, so I appreciate that. I’m still gonna be fighting for four or five more years. I love it. I’ll always be around the sport, [even] when I’m retired, because I enjoy the sport. It’s given a lot to me, and I want to give back as much as I can.

1 vraag mis ik toch als ik eerlijk ben:

How did Arlovski's peepee taste?
