DREAM schedule and fighter-status for 2009

http://www.fansofk1.com/uploads/articles/1812/dream.jpgDREAM announced on Thursday the first two of seven dates for its 2009 schedule. Plus the addition of another GRAND PRIX TOURNAMENT!
Finally, a Featherweight Grand Prix. The GP will take place March 8 at the Saitama Super Arena, followed by April 5 finals at the Gaishi Hall.
DREAM Event Schedule for 2009:
DREAM.7 - March 8 at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan
DREAM.8 - April 5 at Gaishi Hall in Aichi, Japan
DREAM.9 - May
DREAM.10 - July
DREAM.11 - September
DREAM.12 - October Dynamite! - December 31 at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama Japan

DREAM added that it has extended its contract with TBS. All events will continue to air on TBS and SKY PerfecTV (PPV) in Japan. DREAM will continue to air exclusively in the US on HDNet.

Event producer Keiichi Sasahara also provided updates on its fighters:

ALISTAIR OVEREEM/GILBERT YVEL:
"I think Golden Glory is working to contract with the UFC for their other fighters. Overeem is a popular fighter who represents our heavyweight class. We are going to offer both of them more fights in DREAM this year. We will also arrange Overeem K-1 fights if he wants."

MIRKO CRO COP:
"I heard Mirko 'Cro Cop' Filipovic had been doing well since the operation. He will come back in May or July."

JOACHIM HANSEN:
"Regarding Joachim Hansen, he is resting at home in Norway. It seems like some sort of brain damage that caused his terrible headaches and vomiting on New Year's Eve. He will come back to DREAM as soon as his doctor allows him to. In case he takes longer than a year to recover completely, two fighters will fight for the interim championship. One of them will be Shinya Aoki."

Dream continues to deliver some of the best matches in MMA and has been the best "replacement" for Japanese fans after the loss of PRIDE

Following his withdrawal from his New Year’s Eve clash against fellow top 10-ranked lightweight Gesias Cavalcante, reigning Dream lightweight tournament champion Joachim Hansen seemed to disappear.

Neither his coach nor his training partners nor his management could say anything about the whereabouts of the likeable Norwegian.

Since the Dec. 31 bout in Japan had been reportedly cancelled due to Hansen failing medical clearance because of a head injury, wild rumors circulated about the physical condition of the 29-year-old “Hellboy.” Fueled by non-statements from Dream event producer Keiichi Sasahara, speculation even went as far as suggesting Hansen might suffer from a possibly career-ending brain tumor.

John Benjamin, who represents Joachim Hansen in business matters, told Sherdog.com exactly what went down at Saitama Super Arena before the fight: “Joachim was warming up with a training partner and when attempting a takedown, his teammate landed awkwardly on his head. He was immediately rushed to the hospital where they diagnosed a concussion, which is why the fight had to be cancelled.”

On Friday morning Sherdog.com reported that Hansen is healthy now but in a contract dispute with Fighting & Entertainment Group. However, Benjamin contacted Sherdog.com to make it clear there is no “dispute” with FEG. Rather, Hansen’s management is in negotiations with the company and expects to iron out a date for his first title defense.

Meanwhile Hansen is resting in Norway.
