Grandmaster Helio Gracie passes away at age 95!!!

Vandaag is op 95-jarige leeftijd Helio Gracie overleden. Hij was de grondlegger van het Braziliaans Jiu-Jitsu en de patriarch van de Gracie-familie, die later beroemd werden door onder andere hun deelname inde UFC.
Dit zal een klap zijn voor de BJJ wereld:crying:Helio is de absolute grondlegger van het BJJ, een legende.
It is with great sadness that GRACIEMAG.com announces the passing of Grandmaster Helio Gracie. At 95 years of age, the great icon and one of those most responsible for Jiu-Jitsu’s success in Brazil and the world died this morning, at home, in the district of Itaipava, in the mountain region of Rio de Janeiro.
“I created a flag from the sport’s dignity. I oversee the name of my family with affection and nerves of blood,” said the Professor, as his last worlds.
No greater details have been released on his burial.
Helio Gracie’s last public appearance occurred in December of last year, during a belt-promotion ceremony held by Gracie Humaita at the Guanabara Yacht Club.

In one of his most famous interviews, published in the special 100th issue of GRACIEMAG, the professor had declared: “I’ve already told my sons that when I die I want there to be a party. No drinking, no debauchery.”

Vond het geweldig om te zien hoe dit sympathiek oud mannetje altijd bij de gracies was tijdens pride en ufc... Vooral het momentje waarbij hij Sakuraba de hand schudt vond ik prachtig... Sakuraba had toen net royce verslagen in een MMA partij van meer dan 1,5 uur lang!!!!
Rip... De beste man heeft een mooie leeftijd bereikt...

deze man heeft me toch iets megegeven wat mijn leven omgegooit heeft en waar ik niet meer zonder zou kunnen.. :bjj
toch mooi om te zien wat die man berijkt heeft..
Schitterrend leven en carriere; een ware grootmeester. Zijn legende leeft voort in zijn nazaten. Er zijn weinig zo legendarische mensen. Hoge leeftijd bereikt. Rust zacht Helio!

En op wat voor manier is hij oud geworden damn als ik dat filmpje zie waar hij al 91 is dan smeek ik de almachtige (al ben ik niet gelovig) dat hij dat voor mij ook weg legt.

PETROPOLIS, Brazil -- There was no tribute, no tears and no speech.
Helio Gracie’s last will was respected by his sons and wife, who buried him on Thursday in his homeland, less than 10 hours after the Brazilian jiu-jitsu founder died at the age of 95 at Beficência Portuguesa Hospital.
“He was sick for a while, and he got caught by a pneumonia the last 10 days,” son Royler said by phone. “Even being so healthy, he was 95 years old and ended up not resisting.”
Four of the Gracie patriarch’s children -- Royler, Rorion, Rickson and Robin -- were unable to reach Brazil in time to participate in the funeral. Like thousands of jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts fans, they planned to pay a final tribute to Gracie on Friday, had the decision been made to bury him then. Instead, his last wishes were granted.
A simple ceremony was witnessed by some 70 relatives, close friends and students. Sons Royce and Rolker led the procession, a kilometer in length, from the chapel to the tomb where Gracie was buried. At the tomb, Royce asked for a round of applause for his father and placed a black belt over his coffin. Afterward, the UFC 1 and UFC 2 tournament champion revealed that his mother called Monday to tell him his father was weak and in the hospital.
“She thought he wouldn’t last long and told me to come to Rio,” Royce said. “I immediately bought the ticket and came. He was just expecting me to arrive. This morning, he passed away.”

Op het EK werd een minuut stilte in acht genomen en vanaf de 2e dag hing er een groot memorial spandoek. De mooiste hommage kwam echter van zijn kleinzoon.
Cron Gracie vocht gewoon op het EK met Rickson als toeschouwer..en wie weet Helio in spirit. Een mooi emotioneel moment ook toen hij onder grote druk toch het goud won in zijn klasse.
The legacy is safe want dat jong begint echt een tovenaar te worden...respect!
