Former Pride FC middleweight champion (205 pounds) and current competitor in the UFC light heavyweight division, Wanderlei Silva (http://www.mmauniverse.com/fighters/SS177), suggests that he is going to experiment with a cut down to 185 pounds to see if it’s a weight he could make without incident.
If all goes well “The Axe Murderer” — who has lost two of his last three fights inside the Octagon and four of his last five fights — is open to putting his skills to the test in the middleweight class. He clearly needs to change something up and perhaps a move down would do the trick.
The Brazilian striker, however, is swift to point out that if it does happen it won’t be permanent, pulling a page out of the Dan Henderson (http://www.mmauniverse.com/fighters/SS1845) and Rich Franklin (http://www.mmauniverse.com/fighters/SS114) playbooks by alternating between classes. Silva would like to return at UFC 100 (http://www.mmauniverse.com/events/SS11073) in July.
“Yeah, I could try because every guy in my division have to cut to 205 and my normal is 208. I’m going to test now… I’m going to cut my weight. Maybe I go to fight in my next fight at 185. I could fight in both divisions; I could fight 185 and 205…. I don’t know what plans the UFC, but I am ready for to fight in June or July.”
