A live shark has been found dumped on the doorstep of a newspaper office in the south-west Victorian town of Warrnambool.

Police say a passer-by saw the Port Jackson shark outside the Raglan Parade business just after midnight on Wednesday.

Constable Jarrod Dwyer says the shark was about 70 centimetres long.

"We arrived and poured some water on it just to see if it was still breathing and it kicked around for a little while," he said.

"So I walked over to McDonalds and borrowed a bucket off them and filled it up with water, and we picked the shark up and put it inside it and then drove it down to the breakwater and released it back into the water."

He says he cannot understand why someone would leave a shark there to die.

"If we can locate the person that's dumped it, then they'll be charged with cruelty to animals," he said.

Constable Dwyer says he is at a loss as to why the shark was left at the town's newspaper.

"They had no ideas of any person that wished them any harm or wished to send them any type of message, so we're a little dumbfounded at this stage," he said.
