View Full Version : Gegard Mousasi vs Renato Babalu Sobral Confirmed
Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Renato "Babalu" Sobral will face Gegard Mousasi at Affliction 3 on Aug. 1 in Anaheim, Calif.
The bout was initially announced by M-1 Global on its website on Monday. MMAWeekly.com subsequently confirmed the bout with Sobral's manager, Richard Wilner, who said, "It will be a light heavyweight bout, not a catchweight."
Mousasi had originally planned to fight Vitor Belfort in a catchweight at the event, dubbed "Trilogy," confirming the bout on the M-1 Global website last week. The bout had apparently been talked about, but Belfort did not want to move up out of his new home at middleweight, while Mousasi has repeatedly stated that he can no longer make the 185-pound limit.
Sobral has been on a roll as of late, winning five straight bouts, including the capture of the Strikeforce light heavyweight championship from Bobby Southworth last November. He most recently defeated Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou at Affliction's sophomore effort in January.
Sobral had been in plans to face Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante for Strikeforce on June 6, but had to withdraw due to familial considerations. Wilner says that Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker has been nothing short of "wonderful" to work with, and has "always been a man of his word" in supporting big fights such as this. Plans now call for Sobral to return to Strikeforce shortly after Affliction 3 to defend his title.
Considered one of the top middleweight fighters in the world, Mousasi recently vacated the Dream middleweight championship and made the move out of the weight class to fight in Dream's openweight "Super Hulk" tournament, defeating Mark Hunt in the first round of their quarterfinal bout. He weighed in at 218 pounds for that bout, but will have to come back down to 205 for the fight with Sobral.
The bout is expected to be officially released later this week at press conferences in New York and Los Angeles confirming the Aug. 1 event. No. 1 ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko is set to face No. 2 ranked Josh Barnett in the main event of Affliction "Trilogy."

Ik schatte jacare op de grond ook beter dan mousasi, en we weten hoe dat afgelopen is.
je kunt moeilijk het spelletje onderverdelen in boksen grondwerk takedown takedown defense submission skills etc etc als in een computerspelletje en een winnaar verklaren, het komt erop neer wie het beste op de ander weet in te spelen en het gevecht weet te controlleren, mousasi is een natuurlijke ijzersterke vechter met meer slimheid en potentie dan sobral

Mijn verstand zegt mousasi, maar stiekem hoop ik dat sobral wint. Moet gegard nog maar even wachten.

Gegard lag met zijn rug op de grond toen hij die upkick maakte, mooi grondwerk., toch.
Gegard is gewoon veel meer allround dan de meeste topvechters, net als Lyoto en Anderson Silva..
mousasi is vooral heel slim, blijft rustig en houdt overzicht....en daardoor lijkt ie iedere keer op het juiste moment de juiste beslissing te nemen....dus ook tegen Babalu ;)

Ga voor Mousasi, ik vind hem toch de completere vechter en wat Toon al zegt hij is slim en z'n timing is heel scherp. Gegard FTW!
Dit gaat Gegard hands down winnen....
en dan de klem/choke gewoon vast blijven houden terwijl de sheids er tussen komt, kijken wat meneer Sobral daar zelf van vind.

After putting a stop to a recent two fight losing skid by defeating Jan Nortje at DREAM 9 last week in first round action of the open weight “Super Hulk Tournament” it now appears that Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou will now be taking on former Middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi in the semifinal round of the tournament at DREAM 11 in the month of September.
According to FiveOuncesOfPain.com sources have informed them that the two Light Heavyweight combatants are expected to meet up against one another with Ikuhisa Minowa then taking on the 7′2″ Hong Man Choi in the other Super Hulk bout.
With Sokoudjou’s win over ‘The Giant’ Nortje who also apologized (http://urdirt.com/2009/06/01/2009/05/31/sokoudjou-on-nortje-stoppage-i-feel-like-a-douchebag-doing-it/) in a recent edition of HDNet’s Inside MMA this past Friday night will now draw Mousasi who is a submission specialist who submitted former K-1 and PRIDE fighter Mark Hunt and is now expected to also be taking on current StrikeForce Light Heavyweight champion Renato ‘Babalu’ Sobral at Affliction “Trilogy”.
The fight will mark the debut of ‘The Young Vagabond’ competing on American soil, but of course Mousasi will have to come out of his potential matchup with ‘The African Assassin’ unscathed.

Denk dat dit een hele goede competatieve partij gaat worden!
Meer dan sokoudjo.
Denk trouwens niet dat hij weer zo'n upkick ko kan krijgen(hij keek er zelf van op tijdens zijn partij tegen jacare,kijk maar naar zn gezicht) maar het is altijd mogelijk natuurlijk.
Denk dat als hij het dynamisch houd en zich niet laat vastleggen hij het zeker kan winnen.
Maar als Babalu hem tegen de grond krijgt en de snelheid eruit raakt dat hij heel moeilijk los zal kunnen komen.

Manhoef leek vanaf de eerste minuut al doodsbang om naar de grond te gaan en ik overdrijf niet als ik doodsbang zeg. Geen idee waarom Mousasi zo'n imago heeft. Manhoef sloeg erop los toen hij tegen Akiyama vocht, maar tegen Mousasi hield hij zich in. Ik zou 100 keer liever clinchen met Mousasi dan met Akiyama. En ga me niet vertellen dat Mousasi op hetzelfde niveau zit als een judo zwarte bander.

Manhoef leek vanaf de eerste minuut al doodsbang om naar de grond te gaan en ik overdrijf niet als ik doodsbang zeg. Geen idee waarom Mousasi zo'n imago heeft. Men denkt dat hij the next Fedor is. Leuk dat hij wat van de stijl van Fedro overneemt en ook hele rustig is in de ring, maar hij heeft zeker niet een gelijkenis met de skills van Fedor laten zien.

Vind hem niets van fedor hebben, hij is rustig in de ring, so? Zoveel anderen zijn dat.
Vind hem gewoon een mooie allround vechtstyle hebben, daarnaast is hij altijd respectvol en hij praat geen bullshit.

Dit wordt de tweede all-round mma vechter op topniveau voor gegard!
De eerste was Denis Kang.
Manhoef , Hunt en Jacare vallen bij mij niet als all-round mma vechters.
Hoe dan ook, ik zal niet weten wie er gaat winnen...ik heb een gevoel dat sobral wint via sub
Je moet alles in perspectief zien denk ik, als je kijkt naar zijn leeftijd en bouw dan zie je duidelijk dat het gaat over iemand die het ver kan schoppen. Hij is er zeker nog niet maar een vechter als Alistair was op die leeftijd niet eens zo ver als Mousasi en kun je nagaan hoe goed Alistair zich heeft ontwikkeld nu...
Vandaar dat het niet gek is dat mensen hem zien als de nieuwe vechter voor de toekomst. Babulu is zeker een uitdaging maar als hij hem weet te verslaan is hij een solide LHW vechter die van iedereen zou kunnen winnen...
Vind het ook onterecht dat Babulu niet eens een top 10 vechter is, de UFC vechters worden voor mij gevoel te veel gehyped want denk dat een Babulu daar zeker thuis hoort.
Toch zie ik mogelijkheden voor Mousasi, Babulu is een diesel motor en komt pas laat op gang, de meest van zijn overwinningen zijn pas in ronde 2 of 3... Als je Babulu vroeg onder druk zet heeft hij soms moeite om zich aan te passen....

Gegard gaat deze partij winnen dat mag duidelijk zijn. Als je ziet wat hij tot nu toe al gepresteerd heeft en elke partij lijkt hij te groeien. Hij is Neerlands trots :) Hij heeft wel een goede tegenstander, maar ja hij heeft er al een hoop goede gehad.
Vergeet ook niet dat hij tegen Hector Lombard heeft gewonnen, Olympische judoka en ook nog eens een hele goede striker.
Sobral gaat wel zijn lastigste partij tot nu toe worden denk ik, denk dat hij het niet gaat redden zelfs. Sobral heeft veel ervaring tegen top tegenstanders.
Als hij wel wint: dan mag de Mousasi pleuris echt losbreken wat mij betreft :)
Sokoudjou is echt lomp sterk, maar waarschijnlijk conditioneel echt de mindere. Heeft wel Lil Nog en Arona ge-KO-ed, maar dat kan dus ook bij Mousasi gebeuren als ie niet oplet, maar denk moet goed te doen zijn verder.
