Fotoverslag - "Champions of Champions II" - Montego Bay, Jamaica 26-06-09

Vorige week vrijdagavond stond op Jamaica het Champions of Champions II gala gepland. Een FMT gala met één van de beste line-ups ooit! Gedurende de week dat ik op het eiland verbleef heb ik de lezers van Mixfight al op de hoogte gehouden van de gebeurtenissen aldaar - http://www.mixfight.nl/forum/showthread.php?t=93845
Die vrijdag was het hoogtepunt van het CCGI Golftourment gepand, het gala wat ook voor het Muay Thai een internationale doorbraak was. Voor het eerste een FMT gala wat live over de gehele wereld via PPV was te bekijken.

Promotor en vechter Clifton Brown had samen met Risarc kosten nog moeite gespaard om het gala tot een succes te maken. Het budget was meer dan voldoende aanwezig en een ongekende line-up werd samengesteld. De vechters en crew verbleven in de vetste all-inclusive resorts. Dat geld nog niet betekent dat je ook kan organiseren bleek wel op de dag van het gala zelf. De weging had de WMC goed laten verlopen maar op het gala zelf werden vele records gebroken. Zo was het gala wat een uurtje te laat begonnen (wat natuurlijk slecht is met het PPV) ook nog eens tegen half 4 in de nacht afgelopen. Tussen de partijen waren er nietszeggende modeshows en de ringspeaker (Cedric) was zo slecht dat ze hem noodgedwongen vervingen omdat hij overhoop lag met de productieleider. De communicatie tussen alle betrokken partij was gewoon slecht. Kortom, veel leerpunten voor een derde editie.

De partijen daarentegen waren "class, class, class"!!!! Niet één partij was niet de moeite waard om te zien en het aanwezig publiek en VIP's werden getrakteerd op de mooiste wai kru's en MT technieken. Het gala werd een dag later in stijl afgesloten met een black tie gala. Voor de mensen die nog steeds denken dat Mixfight.nl alleen maar een MMA site is komen wij als enige Nederlandse vechtsportpagina met een exclusieve serie foto's van een gala die de boeken in zal gaan als één van de meest memorable Muay Thai gala's ooit;

1. WMC 63,5 Kg World MuayThai Title - Mosab Amrani (Holland) vs Andrei Kulebin (Belarus)
Mosab Amrani mag op dit supergala het spits afbijten in zijn titelpartij waar de witrus Andrei Kulebin de uitdager is. Kulebin is in Nederland niet echt bekend, maar de insiders weten des te beter waartoe deze man in staat is. Hij heeft een enorme staat van dienst en heeft in deze partij Amrani uitgedaagd die de WMC titel won in zijn partij tegen Anuwat Kaewsamrit vorig jaar november op Slamm!! V – Nederland vs Thailand. Kulebin is een groot talent wat momenteel ook klaargestoomd word voor een carrière in de K1 MAX. Van zijn 155 partijen heeft hij er slechts 2 verloren. Amrani begint afwachtend aan de partij en blesseert net als Spong zijn hand in de eerste ronde waardoor hij niet voluit meer kan stoten. Kulebin is sterk in de clinch en scoort veel punten hierdoor. Amrani weet echter van geen ophouden en zet een sterke partij neer en geeft hiermee met zijn 10 A partijen een behoorlijk visitekaartje af aan de aanwezigen. Kulebin wint de partij op punten.

2. WMC 71 Kg World MuayThai Title - John Wayne Parr (Australia) vs Buakaw Por Pramuk (Thailand)
De Gunslinger tegen de voormalige K1 MAX kampioen Buakaw Por Pramuk, ditmaal in een Full Muay Thai partij. JWP vecht de laatste jaren alleen maar op deze regels terwijl Buakaw furore maakte in de K-1 Max. Al tijdens de weging begint de manager van Pramuk te klagen over het feit dat hij wil dat JWP nog een kilo aftraint voor deze partij. Volgens hem moet de partij op -70 worden uitgevochten. De bond en promotor wijzen erop dat het contract is getekend en dat er op FMT volgens de WMC zal worden gevochten. Na een uurtje is het dan toch rond. De partij zelf was voor mij één van de mooiste van de avond! Erg close allemaal en JWP liet zien nog steeds met de absolute top, want dat ik Buakaw ook op volle regels mee te kunnen draaien. Por Pramuk wint de partij op punten.

3. WMC 82,5 Kg World MuayThai Title - Clifton Brown (Canada/Jamaica) vs Kaoklai Kennorassing (Thailand)
De derde partij van de avond, wederom een wereldtitelgevecht tussen twee oude bekenden van elkaar. In Nederland kennen we de Thai Kaoklai Kennorassing natuurlijk nog goed van zijn partij tegen Tyrone Spong op Slamm!! II – Nederland vs Thailand en zijn bekende optredens in de K1 tegen onder ander Michty Mo. Tijdens het Champions of Champions I vorig jaar in Jamaica verloor Brown op punten van Kennorssing in een bloedpartij! Brown was het daar niet mee eens en beargumenteerde dat nog eens uitvoerig op de forums van K1Fans en Axekickboxing. Tijdens deze tweede editie vochten der beide heren wederom tegenover elkaar en het beloofde vuurwerk te worden. Brown had zich speciaal voor deze partij twee maanden intensief voorbereid in het Thaise Por Pramuk kamp. In de eerste ronde stond iedereen al op zijn stoel als Brown neergaat door een stoot van de Thai en nog maar net het einde de rust haalde. Een gevalletje, "saved by the bell". Daarna kwam Brown echt goed terug! Veel respect voor deze man die een geweldige toppartij vocht terwijl hij de druk van deze miljoenenkostende productie ook nog op zijn schouders had liggen! In de resterende vier rondes vocht hij goed naar voren en liet het echt MT zien! Ellebogen over en weer en hij zette de Thai in zijn achteruit met knieën en lichaamstrappen. Brown wint alsnog de partij in een unanieme jurybeslissing.

4. WMC 93 Kg World MuayThai Title and UN Cup - Nathan "Carnage" Corbett (Australia) vs Tyrone "King of the Ring" Spong (Holland)
De vierde partij van de avond was eigenlijk de partij waar de hele thaibokswereld op zat te wachten. De "King of the Ring" versus "Carnage". Oost versus West! Corbett is de man in het FMT en daarom was het jammer dat deze partij op kickboksregels zal worden uitgevochten. Corbett had al wat meer water bij de wijn moeten doen want speciaal voor deze partij was hij 6 kilo aangekomen. De partij begon redelijk gelijk op! Zowel Spong als Corbett zijn van dezelfde lengte, maar lijken ook een gelijke stijl te hebben. Na een bokscombinatie kwam de lowkicks. Mooie eerste ronde waar Spong, Corbett aanslaat en 8 tellen moet incasseren. Na de rust was Corbett zo leek het goed hersteld en begon meer in zijn spel te komen en het vertouwen groeide. In de derde ronde was er dan eindelijk "the Big Kaboush" zoals Michael "the Voice" Schiavello dat zo mooi kan zeggen. Na de eerste ronde was er niemand die er ook maar aan twijfelde dat deze partij niet in de KO eindigen. Spong stapte in met een rechter knie, maar hield zijn linker hand laag! Corbett kwam daar overheen met een rechterhoek en Spong ging zwaar neer!
Daarna gebeurde er het volgt; Corbett ging na de neerslaan van Spong meteen in de neutrale hoek staan en scheidsrechter Paulo "Paco" Toucha telde Spong uit!! De partij was dus al gestaakt door de scheidsrechter!! Toucha maakt in eerste instantie een vrij lage beweging met zijn armen dat de partij gestaakt was wat Corbett moet hebben opgevangen als het "fight"signaal, die meteen uit zijn hoek stormde om het af te maken. Toucha stond met zijn rug richting Corbett en kon het niet verhinderen dat hij Spong nogmaals met twee harde rechter hoeken raakte, waardoor Spong wederom neergaat en zwaar aangeslagen naar de neutrale hoek wankelde. Ondertussen is de gehele hoek van zowel Spong als Corbett in de ring en er wordt druk overleg gepleegd. Door alle commotie en het feit dat de avond nog lang niet afgelopen was werd besloten in een No Contest. Uit bronnen binnen de organisatie hoorde ik op het black tie gala die dag erop dat de uitslag zal worden teruggedraaid in een TKO overwinning voor Corbett, omdat de scheidsrechter de partij al gestaakt had en de vechter Corbett niet verantwoordelijk kan worden gehouden vanwege het feit dat de scheidsrechter dat niet duidelijk genoeg aan de vechter had laten zien. De hoek van Corbett zag het wel duidelijk omdat die met hun gezicht naar de scheidsrechter stonden en al op het punt stonden om de ring te betreden.

5. WMC 76 Kg World MuayThai Title - Rayen Simson (Holland) vs Eugene "Boom Boom" Ekkelboom (Australia)
De oude rot in het vak Rayen "True Bala" Simson is momenteel bezig met zijn laatste jaar als professioneel vechter en verdedigde in deze partij zijn titel tegen de Australiër Eugene "Boom Boom" Ekkelboom. Simson won zijn WMC titel vorig jaar november op Slamm!! V tegen de lange Thai Lamsongkram Chuwattana. Simson wil echt knallen in zijn laatste jaar en dat viel me meteen op bij de eerste trainingen op de Golfcorse van het Hilton. Simson begint voortvarend aan deze partij en slaat Ekkelboom in de eerste ronde aan wat hem 8 hersteltellen oplevert. Simson kan het niet afmaken, maar in de eerste 3 ronden scoort hij meer punten en draait een goede partij! Helaas trapt Ekkelboom in de eerste seconden van de vierde ronde Simson's arm stuk waardoor hij aangeeft aan de hoek om de handdoek te gooien.

6. WMC 61,5 Kg World MuayThai Title - Liam Harrison (United Kingdom) vs Anuwat Kaewsamrit (Thailand)
De Engelsman Liam Harrison vocht in de zesde partij van de avond om de WMC wereldtitel tot 61,5 kilogram tegenover de harde Thai Anuwat Kaewsamrit die we in Nederland allemaal nog wel kennen van zijn partijen tegen Hassan 100% ait Bassou en Mosab Amrani. De man van de Bad Company Gym uit Leeds is goed Thais geschoold maar bleek niet sterk genoeg om Anuwat in zijn achteruit te kunnen dwingen. Harrison blijkt nog een aardige bokser, maar in deze mooie partij wint Anuwat op lowkicks in de beginfase van de 3de ronde. De Engelsman komt nog wel overeind maar kan niet meer verder lopen en de scheidsrechter telt Harrison uit.

7. WMC 72,5 Kg World MuayThai Title - Cosmo Alexander (Brazil) vs Yodsaenklai Fairtex (Thailand)
Alexander is net als Yodsaenklai geen onbekende bij het Nederlandse publiek. Op Slamm!! IV kon Nederland al genieten van deze Thaise trapmachine en Alexander is bekend geworden in ons land door Showtime en won pas geleden nog in een mooie partij van Muthel Groenhart. Fairtex lijkt na een uitgebreide wai kru van Alexander totaal niet onder de indruk van de sympathieke Braziliaan en loopt als een soort van Tong po op het af en houd het gevecht kort. De Thaise superman gooit zijn hele arsenaal van trappen in de strijd en Alexander kan niets anders doen dat zijn dekking hoog houden. Dit beeld verandert nauwelijks en Fairtex lijkt het na de 2de ronde al wat rustiger aan te doen. De benen van Alexander hebben al behoorlijk wat te verduren gekregen en in de beginfase van de vierde ronde gaat de Braziliaan neer op lowkicks.

8. WMC 63,5 Kg Woman's World Title - Julie Kitchen (United Kingdom) vs Angela Rivera Parr (USA)
Voor Julie Kitchen was deze partij op de dameswereldtitel bij de WMC haar tweede keer in Jamaica. Vorig jaar verloor ze in een mooie partij van onze eigen Germaine de Randamie en nu staat ze tegen Mrs. Parr, Angela Rivera. Wederom een mooie damespartij op het programma want beiden lieten mooi dingen zien. Parr stoot meer, beter en harder maar het is toch Kitchen die met haar knie- en traptechnieken meer punten bij de jury scoort.

9. WMC 72,5 Kg Intercontinental Title & #1 Ranking - Sean Wright (Schotland) vs Marco Pique (Holland)
In de negende partij van de avond vocht "the Sniper" tegen de Schot Sean Wright, onder andere bekend van het eerste seizoen van de Asia Contender waar hij uit de serie werd geslagen door Yodsaeklai Fairtex. Voor Pique was die een wijziging aangezien hij in eerste instantie tegen Dzabar Askerov zou vechten, wat een rematch zou zijn (K1 MAX Scandinavië ’08). Pique was al gedurende de gehele week scherp en liet dat ook in de wedstrijd duidelijk zien! Stond goed op zijn benen en scoorde goed met een paar harde lowkicks. De dekking van Wright zit boven niet goed dicht en na 1.48m in de eerste ronde komt de cross van Pique die meteen een einde maakt aan de partij. Wright gaat zo hard neer van de stoot van Pique dat de scheidsrechter meteen de partij staakt.

10. WMC World HeavyWeight MuayThai Title - Paul Slowinksi (Australia) vs Patrice Quatterson (France)
Quatterson is onze grote vriend in het hotel waar we verblijven. Deze grote Fransman is zich al de gehele week van geen kwaad bewust en geeft iedereen vriendelijk een hand. Dat hij kan beuken weten we nog van mijn vorige partij op Jamaica waar de Amerikaan Rick Cheek geen partij was voor onze grote vriend. Slowinksi is echter van een ander niveau dan de Amerikaan en blijf na een heftig begin van de eerste ronde overeind en begint al vrij snel de partij over te nemen. De Fransman beukt Slowinksi nog wel met een elleboog op zijn schedel wat een snee veroorzaakt bovenop maar voor de rest is het Slowinski die de eerste ronde domineert. Quatterson loopt zwaar wankelt naar zijn hoek na 3 minuten knokken en al vroeg in de tweede ronde is het over. Slowinksi slaat Quatterson neer!
