Despite telling the press that there is nothing wrong with his elbow, UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Anderson-Silva-1356) is in need of surgery to remove bone spurs and will not be fighting again in 2009, Dana White informed Sherdog.com on Thursday.
“Contrary to whatever the hell he is saying -- he is ‘200-percent healthy,’ -- he’s having some bone spurs removed from his elbow which is a simple little procedure that happens, but you have to have recovery time,” stated the UFC president.
He also revealed that UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Brock-Lesnar-17522) recently underwent a similar procedure.
According to a UFC source, that was the surgical issue that led to the Shane Carwin (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Shane-Carwin-14013)-Cain Velasquez (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Cain-Velasquez-19102) match that was scraped in favor of Lesnar vs. Carwin.
Not knowing when Lesnar would be back, UFC officials put together the heavyweight contender matchup between two of the company’s best prospects, only to nix it when their top pay-per-view draw informed them he would be ready to return in November.
White did not have a timetable for his middleweight champion’s return.
