Erin Toughill Out Of Fight With Marloes Coenen

Robert Sargent on October 27, 2009 ShareThis Mere hours after the cancellation of the top contender’s bout between Sarah Kaufman and Takayo Hashi, a medical issue has forced Erin Toughill to withdraw from her title eliminator bout against Marloes Coenen, which was set to be a part of the Strikeforce: “Fedor vs Rogers” card on November 7th.

Details surrounding Toughill’s withdrawal have not been released, but the cause is said to be due to an “undisclosed medical condition.” There has been no word as to whether Coenen will still compete on the card, but the lack of top challengers makes her participation unlikely.


Toughill (10-2-1) was set to battle Coenen to determine the #1 contender for Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos’s Strikeforce Women’s Lightweight Championship. She defeated Coenen in the pair’s first meeting in the semi-finals of the SmackGIRL World Remix Tournament in 2004.

Coenen (19-3-0) was originally brought in as an alternate at Strikeforce: “Carano vs Cyborg” in August in case Santos or fellow main event participant Gina Carano missed weight. At the post-fight press conference, Coenen was announced as the first title challenger for Santos’s newly-won title, but injury forced Santos out of their proposed meeting.



With no other top challengers in the 145-pound division, Strikeforce may opt to reschedule the contender’s bout between Coenen and Toughill, but they may also reinstate Coenen as the number one contender and set up a showdown with Santos in the next two months.

Either way, the loss of yet another top women’s bout will significantly hinder Strikeforce’s efforts to promote their women’s division as the year nears an end.

Erg jammer, ik had graag deze rematch gezien. Hopelijk wordt de volgende partij dan tegen Cyborg en als Marloes kampioen is kan ze de titel mooi verdedigen tegen Toughill.

It looks like Marloes Coenen (http://www.fightergirls.com/fighter.asp?ID=18) will get to try to avenge a loss after all.

With Erin Toughill (http://www.fightergirls.com/fighter.asp?ID=85) withdrawing due to illness, #4 ranked 135 pounder Roxanne Modafferi (http://www.fightergirls.com/fighter.asp?ID=166) confirmed to Fightergirls she will be stepping up to the plate, and stepping up in weight, to face Coenen at the Strikeforce CBS card (http://www.fightergirls.com/event.asp?ID=1339) on Nov. 7.

Modafferi (13-4) won a split decision over Coenen (16-3) at the K-Grace 1 (http://www.fightergirls.com/event.asp?ID=141) card in May 2007. Modafferi’s last fight was almost one year ago with an unnamimoius win verses Chisa Yonezawa (http://www.fightergirls.com/fighter.asp?ID=1447). Coenen is coming off a loss back in January to Cindy Dandois (http://www.fightergirls.com/fighter.asp?ID=1537). Modafferi has been training out of Japan and hasn’t fought in the US since April of last year.

Modafferi is excited to be coming back to the States and doesn't mind going up in weight. She is actually a few pounds heavier than her normal fight weight of 135 pounds.

The fight will still be an undercard bout to Fedor vs. Brett Rogers main event, and will not be televised. However, clips of the fight will be seen during the CBS telecast.

Modafferi will replace an injured Erin Toughill (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Erin-Toughill-1955) on 10-day’s notice. Toughill withdrew from the bout Wednesday due to “medical reasons.”

MMAWeekly.com was the first to report about the late replacement bout, which will be a rematch of the pair’s K-Grace 1 fight in Japan in May 2007. Both women fought three times that night in a tournament format, while Modafferi earned a split decision against Coenen after two three-minute rounds in the finals.

A product of Holland’s Golden Glory team, Coenen has been a staple of Japan’s women’s MMA scene since 2000 and has 16 career wins. Coenen, 28, lost a unanimous decision to Cindy Dandois (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Cindy-Dandois-42457) at BOTE “Beast of the East” in Holland last January.

Modafferi, 27, a Delaware native, has studied MMA abroad in Japan for the last few years. She capped off a six-fight win streak with a unanimous decision victory against Chisa Yonezawa (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Chisa-Yonezawa-40646) at GCM “Valkyrie 1” in November 2008.

The undercard bout is still expected to get airtime, if time permits, during CBS’s live telecast of the event starting at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.
