Records are there to be broken, by Golden Glory that is, K-1 GP finals 2009
This has been the busiest month in the history of 10 years of Golden Glory.
It started in Strikeforce where Marloes Coenen from Golden Glory defeated her opponent 1n 1 minute. Dion Starring from Golden Glory fought 1 week before the GP in Holland against Jesse Gibbs and won this fight.
Team Golden Glory arrived in Tokyo, Japan 10 days before the K-1 GP finals on December 5th. The team spirit was great and and everybody had breakfast together and trained together. The fighters got a lot of rest as well and on December 2nd the second team of coaches and family members of the fighters arrived.
The K-1 press conference was the best ever , Fuji Tv even said it.
The stare down between Errol Zimmerman from Golden Glory and Remy Bonjansky must have been the longest in history.
Badr Hari and Alistair Overeem were challenging eachother and there was a lot of noise from the fans who witnessed the press conference.
Would this bring the long awaited onslaught it promised to be?
The rebirth of K-1!!
Well, if it was not for Gokhan Saki and Errol Zimmerman and Kharitonov (all from Golden Glory) it would have been the shortest K-1 ever.
Gokhan and Errol both walked into a punch in round one but recoverd well and fought a great second and third round.
Saki was very fast and if it was not for the first down in round one, the outcome of this fight would have been different. But it was a great fight from both fighters with the audience as the big winner!
Errol wanted an extra round but Remy was rewarded the winner, a great action packed fight. I do not know if that staredown helped or that Errol challenged Remy at the drawing, but Remy actually came to fight this time.
Great perfomence by both fighters and what potential Errol has, being the youngest of all the K-1 fighters putting up such a great performance and fighting amongst the greats.
For the first time in his life he trained seriously and it paid off, not in a victory but by fighting like he did against the three time K-1 champion Remy, Errol deserves a lot of respect!
Sergey fought his first K-1 fight and showed a big heart eating a gazillion lowkicks from the much more expireince kickboxer Daniel Ghita.
But it happened in round three that the lowkicks became to much for Sergey, who tried to block but could not really get into the fight. However there were moments that Sergey came close to KO Daniel Ghita with dangerous uppercuts and he did land a lot of good body shots for his first K-1 fight, Sergey fought for what he was worth and it was an entertaining fight to watch!
Revenge of the Terminator -Schilt
The funny thing was that everybody was focusing on Bad Hari, but there were more tournament fights. One of them was Semmy Schilt, who never lost in the K-1 tournaments he participated in before.
Badr Hari finishes his fight against Ruslan Karaev with two quick downs, but receives some heavy blows himself by the aggressive Karaev.
The second fight in that bracket was Alistair Overeem from Golden Glory against the Brazilian Teixera. Teixera who never was knocked out before got a taste of Overeem, when in the first minute of the fight Overeem lands a devastating knee on the chin of Teixera. The knock Out is so devastating that people got really worried as there was no movement in teixera whatsoever for a long period!
Winner by Ko, Alistair Overeem.
The half finals is epic and the exitement and emotion can be felt all through out the entire Yokohama Arena in this rematch on K-1 rules by Badr Hari and Alistair Overeem.
Both fighters want to score an early KO, both fighter have the ability to do so.
It is badr who attacks but Alistair's defense is quite good and twice Badr goes down to the canvas by Alistair throwing him down.
It is when Alistair tries to KO Badr with a huge left hook, that Badr counters and Alistair receives an 8 count, the first time in a long period of time.
Badr tries now to go for the kill, Alistair took the eight counts professionally, waited and came up and tried to recover. The second attack where badr ends the fight with a left high kick makes Alistair wobble and fall back into the ropes. But he was not really grogy from the kick, but the ref stopped the fight, just before the end of the round. Badr Hari makes it to the finals.
Another battle field in the second bracket
Semmy Schilt, knocks down Le Banner with a very hard kick to the body. Le Banner gets up and tries to continue to fight only to receive a second hard kick to his mid section. Le Banner is left in pain on the canvas in less then 1 minute.
Errol Zimmerman puts up a great performance against 3 x K-1 winner Remy Bonjansky. In the first round Errol receives an eight count but recovers and brings the fight to Remy.
In round two and three Errol is aggressive and did not gass like many people expected. Remy was a lot more aggressive than usual and therefore the fight became very exciting. We wanted an extra round, but the victory was given to Remy Bonjansky. However Errol Zimmerman from Golden Glory being the youngest fighters of all K-1 fighters proves with this fight that he belongs at the top and will be very dangerous for everybody.
The second fight of Schilt is like a rocky movie where Schilt receives an eight count in the first 20 seconds of the fight because of Remy delivering a hook punch. Semmy recovers and puts the pressure on and makes a sweet come back by delivering two knock downs to Bonjanksy, one knock down is even done with a right straight punch from Schilt, who looks more and more aggressive. Winner by KO Semmy Schilt!
The Finals
The final is between Badr Hari and Semmy Schilt
Earlier this year Schilt lost the fight with Badr Hari in the Arena and everybody thought Badr had an advantage to win this finals.
I have to thank Dave Jonkers and Cor Hemmers for their plan and strategy. We told Semmy how he could win the GP for the fourth time in five years, which nobody has done before.
The fight went exactly as planned and Semmy executed the game plan with deadly accuracy resulting in - sending Badr hari to the floor twice, to then finish it off in style with a left high kick.
This performance by Semmy Schilt shut up any critics who became repeaters by saying he was a boring fighter and one dimensional. The way he knocked out his opponents tonight resulted in the quickest K-1 victory ever in K-1 history breaking the previous record of Peter Aerts.
It resulted in breaking the record of Ernesto Hoost as Semmy became 4 times champion in 5 years and is still undefeated in K-1 GP final 8 tournaments.
At the end Semmy dedicated his victory to the Romanian Golden Glory fighter Vitali Mitu, who recently tragicly deceased by a heart attack during training in Golden Glory Romania.
The family man from Zuid Laren, who came back to the hotel after winning his 4th k-1 GP title was welcomed by his wife and his 18 months old son. Semmy’s son said papa is the best and when the 18 month old son raised his two little arms in the air, it made many people cry!!
I want to thank the trainers my partner Ron and all people who supported and believed in Golden Glory. It is the strongest team in the world and it will stay the strongest team in the world, like orca’s swimming together in the ocean, this family of Golden Glory is a great feeling! This was the best K-1 ever, there was not a single boring fight, this is what fighting is all about, 60% was Golden Glory that makes us very proud!!
