Georges St-Pierre Undergoes Surgery to Repair Injured Knee
UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will undergo surgery Tuesday to fix the damage to his injured right knee.
The procedure will be done at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, a renowned facility for sports medicine among professional athletes. It will be performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the team physician of Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers, who is considered one of the most accomplished orthopedists in sports medicine.
Dr. ElAttrache has performed knee surgeries on top athletes including NBA star Blake Griffin, Major League all-star outfielder Andre Ethier and NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Tom Brady.
In a recent teleconference, St-Pierre's personal orthopedist Dr. Sebastien Simard said that the surgery would require a total reconstruction of St-Pierre's anterior cruciate ligament along with repairing damage in his meniscus.
Estimates for his return have ranged from between 6-10 months, depending on how he responds to physical rehabilitation.
St-Pierre (22-2) attributed the knee injury to overcompensation issues. Just prior to it, he had hurt his left knee, and believes the extra stress on his healthy knee led to the ACL tear. The major injury happened during a wrestling training session. At the time, St-Pierre heard a crack and felt pain but attempted to continue.
In the days afterward, St-Pierre suffered no swelling, so he was convinced it was only a minor setback, but the stability never improved, eventually leading him to a pair of MRIs that both confirmed extensive damage.
The injury of course, forced St-Pierre out of a planned February bout with Nick Diaz, and his spot was taken by Carlos Condit. The Diaz-Condit bout has now been designated as an interim welterweight title fight.
St-Pierre has reigned over the welterweight class for over 1,300 days since defeating Matt Serra at UFC 83 in April 2008. Upon his return, St-Pierre will fight the interim champion in hopes of re-staking his claim to No. 1.
Georges St-Pierre Undergoes Successful Knee Surgery
UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre underwent successful knee surgery Tuesday in Los Angeles, St-Pierre's coach Firas Zahabi confirmed with MMAFighting.com.
"It went great," Zahabi wrote via text message. "The doctor said it could not have gone better."
The surgery was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, a renowned facility for sports medicine among professional athletes. St-Pierre's team expects the champion to return to action in 2012. The recovery time could be anywhere between 6-10 months.
In the meantime, the UFC has booked an interim title fight between Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit for UFC 143 in February.
It was announced last week that GSP had completely torn his anterior cruciate ligament and damaged his meniscus.

A UFC 143 heavyweight showdown between Roy Nelson and Fabricio Werdum is in tap for Super Bowl weekend, according to MMAWeekly.com sources.
Nelson’s (16-6) UFC tenure was teetering on the brink following back-to-back losses to Junior dos Santos and Frank Mir, but he bounced back strong in his most recent fight. Nelson took the fight to Mirko “Cro Cop Filipovic at UFC 137, likely ending the Croatian’s career via a third-round TKO stoppage.
Fabricio Werdum Returns to the UFC
Former Strikeforce heavyweight contender Fabricio Werdum is headed back to the UFC.
UFC president Dana White confirmed with MMAFighting.com on Thursday that Werdum "is a UFC fighter." Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
White would not confirm when Werdum would make his return to the organization, however, MMAWeekly.com and other outlets reported on Wednesday that "Vai Cavalo" would meet Roy Nelson at UFC 143 on Feb. 4 in Las Vegas.
Werdum (14-5-1) last appeared in the UFC in Oct. 2009 when he lost via first-round knockout to Junior dos Santos. The promotion released the Brazilian following the fight, which led to him subsequently signing with Strikeforce. The 34-year-old went 3-1 in Strikeforce, with his defining moment coming in June 2010 when he submitted Fedor Emelianenko in the first round. Werdum was last seen in a Strikeforce cage losing to Alistair Overeem via unanimous decision. He went 2-2 in the UFC.
On Thursday, White announced that the Strikeforce heavyweight division would be abolished in 2012, following the conclusion of the heavyweight grand prix and the GP winner fighting one more time in the organization.
Fabricio Werdum vs. Roy Nelson Confirmed for UFC 143
Fabricio Werdum's first fight back in the UFC will be against the new-look Roy Nelson. Both Nelson and Werdum confirmed the news, which was first reported last week by MMAWeekly.com, on Tuesday.
The fight will take place at UFC 143 on Feb. 4 in Las Vegas.

Werdum was last seen in a Strikeforce cage losing to Alistair Overeem via unanimous decision. He went 2-2 in the UFC.
Nelson (16-6) showed off a leaner physique at UFC 137 against Mirko Cro Cop. "Big Country" picked up a much-needed win when he defeated the Croat via third-round TKO. The win snapped a two-fight losing streak for Nelson.
UFC 143 will be headlined by Nick Diaz vs. Carlos Condit. The main card will air live on pay-per-view.
Dustin Poirier vs. Ricardo Lamas Slated for UFC 143
Ricardo Lamas has agreed to replace the injured Erik Koch against Dustin Poirier at UFC 143, the company announced Tuesday evening. The Poirier vs. Lamas featherweight tilt will take place at UFC 143 on Feb. 4 in Las Vegas.
The 22-year-old Poirier is a perfect 3-0 since dropping down to featherweight. He most recently defeated Pablo Garza via second-round submission at UFC on Fox last month.
Lamas (11-2) was also victorious at UFC on FOX, defeating Cub Swanson via second-round submission, as well. The 29-year-old Chicago-native is 2-0 since dropping down to 145 pounds earlier this year.
UFC 143, headlined by Nick Diaz vs. Carlos Condit, will air live on pay-per-view. Other fights announced for the card are Josh Koscheck vs. Mike Pierce and Roy Nelson vs. Fabricio Werdum.
Carlos Condit Opens as Favorite Over Nick Diaz at UFC 143
As if Nick Diaz needs a reason to motivate himself for his upcoming UFC 143 main event matchup with Carlos Condit -- a bout that will determine a UFC interim welterweight champion -- Diaz can turn to the oddsmakers for some fuel.
Diaz has voiced a displeasure at a perceived lack of respect for his achievements, and despite winning 11 fights in a row and vacating the Strikeforce welterweight belt to fight in the UFC, that apparently wasn't quite enough for linesmakers, who installed Condit as the favorite at UFC 143.
Condit was only slightly favored in the opening line listed at several online sports books. He was listed at -125 while Diaz was -105.
Since then, however, bettors have already closed the gap, and the fight is now a pick 'em, with both fighters at -115.
At UFC 137, Diaz (26-7, 1 no contest) made his first start in the UFC since 2006 and romped in a unanimous decision win over BJ Penn. Afterward, he was bumped ahead of Condit and into a title fight with Georges St-Pierre, but a torn ACL sidelined the bout, paving the way for Diaz and Condit to collide.
Condit is also in the midst of a strong run, having won four in a row and 12 of his last 13 overall. He's finished each of his last three opponents -- Rory McDonald, Dan Hardy and Dong Hyun Kim -- by KO or TKO.
UFC 143 takes place on Feb. 4 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
warrrrrr michael kuiper!!!!!
