Mixfight interview met Vadim Finkelstein (manager Fedor)!!

Tijdens het M-1 selection gala dat op vrijdag 5 februari jl. in Hilversum plaats vond, waren er niet alleen bekende vechters. Ook bekende trainers en managers waren aanwezig om dit toernooi te aanschouwen. Zo zagen we mensen als Remco Pardoel, Ernesto Hoost, Bert Kops, Johannes Hofman, maar ook de manager van Fedor Emelianenko, Vadim Finkelstein. Een interview zou niet gek zijn en ik heb de gedachte nog niet uitgesproken of Remco Pardoel regelt via forumbroeder Jesselaar een interview. De taalbarrière zou roet in het eten kunnen gooien bedenk ik me terwijl ik op Vadim afloop… die me vervolgens in het Nederlands te woord staat!

During the M-1 selection event that was held Friday February 5th in Hilversum (The Netherlands) there were not only famous fighters. Some well known trainers and managers were at the event as well. We saw people like Remco Pardoel, Ernesto Hoost, Bert Kops, Johannes Hofman and also the manager of Fedor Emelianenko, Vadim Finkelstein. An interview would be nice and Remco Pardoel managed via Jesselaar, also participant on the Mixfight forum, an interview. I thought the language could be a problem when I approached Vadim… but he talked to me in Dutch!



That’s right, Vadim Finkelstein speaks Dutch very well. This makes the interview a lot easier. Vadim walks with me to the corridor, because it’s too loud in the hall to do an interview. ‘I don’t speak Dutch very well’ Vadim said while we were on the corridor. Better than my Russian I think. I introduce myself and say I’m from Mixfight. ‘That’s a famous site, the same as Mixfight.ru’ laughs Finkelstein en continues ‘You cooperate with our site don’t you?’ I confirm this and start the interview. During the interview it seems we can speak Dutch and his Dutch is fine.

How did you end up in combat sports?
‘I used to practice some Sambo myself. (Laughs) My trainer is also Poetin’s trainer. I only did it for a short time. In 1997 I started organizing MMA matches, together with Apy Echteld (Red Devil). Dutch fighters as Bob Schreiber and Gilbert Yvel fought on my first shows.’



Since when are you the manager of Fedor?
‘Since 2003 I’m Fedor’s manager. I knew him superficial at that moment. We knew each other from other fighters. In 2003 I had a few years a television show on the federal channel. We then decided to work together.’

A topic that concerns the people on Mixfight for some time is: when will Fedor fight against Alistair?
‘Not yet, first Fedor will fight against Werdum next month. It’s difficult to say, cause Alistair fights in Japan. I don’t know exactly his plan. You read in the interview that he would like to fight in May. He hasn’t fought in America for over two years. Alistair is very strong, very big (laughs) and twice the size he has been. He’s very good on the ground, Fedor is also good on the ground. Recently he only gets standup fighters. It will be a good fight, for sure!’




Will Fedor ever fight in the UFC?
‘Fedor fights anybody in Strikeforce and is with M-1. We want to make a deal with the UFC. We got a deal for two fights at Strikeforce. We would like to cooperate with the UFC, but that isn’t easy because it would be an exclusive deal. We would also like to cooperate with the UFC champion, Brock Lesnar. That would be a very good fight I think. The UFC has a lot of good fighters that Fedor can fight.’



How is the preparation for the fight against Werdum going?
‘It’s good, but he’s not really preparing. Tomorrow I will go to Moscow and the day after tomorrow I will visit Ukraine with Fedor. We have got a very large M-1 league there with 8 (local) tournaments. It is very popular in every city there. Not only in Kiev, but also in Odessa and other cities.’

Will we see Fedor participate in sambo matches this year?
‘Only if it’s not within two months for an important MMA fight. Fedor does not only fight for titles or belts. Fedor thinks that combat sambo has a lot of similarities with MMA and that it is an effective sport for the MMA.’

How long do you expect Fedor will fight?
‘Fedor is 33, Randy Couture is 47 (laughs), so he will continue fighting for some time. Anyway, he does not want to stop yet.’

What do you think of Fedor as a person?
‘Fedor doesn’t drink, doesn’t go to clubs, doesn’t do drugs, he is a plain and especially correct person. He is also very religious and visits the church every Sunday. He is a calm person, won’t go to busy cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg.’

Do you have a message for the Mixfight.nl members?
‘We do it all for the fans. This year we are improving a lot. We change a lot because there have been mistakes made in the past. We organized a country competition and the countries switched the fighter, that is why the audience did not really get to know the fighters. Now we organize some kind of grandprix system. I thnk this is better for the fans. We hope our ideas will increase, we don’t want to stop but grow. I want the public to see that our intentions are good. We try to expand MMA worldwide.’
