Fedor Emelianenko to take on Hidehiko Yoshida in April 25th retirement fight in ASTRA

It has emerged that WAMMA heavyweight champion, Fedor Emelianenko will take on Japanese MMA legend, Hidehiko Yoshida in his retirement fight on April 25th in ASTRA.




According to an article in today’s Nikkan Sports, the Russians camp has been deep in negotiations with Yoshida ever since he announced he was set to retire from the sport. A further meeting is planned to finalise the details of a deal at DREAM 13 this coming Monday.

The move is set to frustrate MMA fans across the world who have been calling for the man considered by many to be the best heavyweight in the world to face top class opposition.

A proposed fight with Fabricio Werdum seems to be in no-man’s land after contract wrangling between Strikeforce and his management team at M-1 Global.

daar zeggen ze correct dat in een japans tijdschrijft staat dat er onderhandelingen zijn geweest, mmabay doet het lijken alsof het gaat gebeuren

mmabay zei ook dat lesnar met pensioen ging, dat UFC 91 niet doorging en dat kimo leopoldo dood was. het is een site van bloggers die geruchten als waarheid presenteren, niemand neemt ze serieus.

of course niet, wilde gewoon ff zeggen dat het enige wat we weten is dat in een nikkan sports artikel stond dat fedor als mogelijke tegenstander genoemd is, maar dit gaat echt niet gebeuren waar fedor & m-1 alleen maar superfights willen.

als dit gebeurd zie ik een fedor-ogawa (ook een judoka) II scenario, die werd ook gruwelijk op zn plek gezet.

Was ook precies het gevecht waar ik aan dacht. Ik zie het gevecht niet snel gebeuren, maar mocht het wel doorgaan dan verwacht ik niet dat Fedor veel problemen met Yoshida heeft.

Wat zei die Fickelchtein nu ook alweer: Alistair moest zich eerst maar bewijzen? En geen Fedor vs Werdum bij Strikeforce (hand is plotseling genezen en vacantie wordt afgebroken) dat gaat aan de kant voor jawel een Japanse tegenstander.

Kan me dit gevecht wel voorstellen, zeker vanuit de centjes gezien. Yoshida is nog steeds groots in Japan dus er is geld voor over. Verder is Fedor voor de Japaners een onbetwiste grootheid, men is daar niet zo van de UFC. Ook zijn het beiden judoka´s. Yoshida natuurlijk een superkampioen en ook kan behoorlijk mee als kampioen van Rusland en redelijk succesvol op de internationale toernooien. Fedor is inmiddels meer een geldvechter dan iets anders dus ik denk dat we deze partij gaan zien. Zou ook niet weten wie Yoshida anders in zijn afscheidspartij zou willen zien. Misschien Akiyama maar die heeft verplichtingen bij UFC. Gracie zou ook een leuke zijn, die heeft nog iets recht te zetten tegen Yoshida

Japanese press reports stating that Hidehiko Yoshida will likely face Fedor Emelianenko in his retirement bout at Astra 1 on April 25 in Tokyo have no validity, said Evgeni Kogan, director of operations for M-1 Global, the organization that represents the Russian heavyweight.

“I heard about it today for the first time. I think it's some Japanese people with a sense of humor. No foundation whatsoever,” wrote Kogan in an email Friday to Sherdog.com.

M-1 Global and the U.S.-based Strikeforce are in the final stages of signing off on a revised deal that will see the two organizations co-promote additional events together in the U.S. in 2010. The two organizations already co-hosted a November event headlined by Emelianenko, which aired live on CBS to over four million viewers.

Kogan said talks between the two entities continue, after M-1 Global approached Strikeforce earlier this year to re-negotiate a three-event deal they had previously signed last August.

“We are still tying up a couple of loose ends,” said Kogan on Friday, but said the process was “a little further along.” Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told Sherdog.com on Wednesday that the deal’s closing was “on the five-yard line” and that he hoped to sew it up by the end of the week.

In the exclusive video, Coker acted unfazed by M-1 Global’s request to re-examine the deal and agreed there were terms that needed “buttoning up.”

Kogan reiterated that a June or July return for Emelianenko, the world’s No. 1 ranked heavyweight, to Strikeforce is still feasible. The 33-year-old fighter champion is expected to face former UFC contender Fabricio Werdum. Preliminary plans for an August event could also see Emelianenko move to that card, especially if the show airs on CBS. Coker confirmed that the August move is also a possibility.

Kogan also debunked persistent rumors that M-1 Global is currently negotiating with the UFC for an alternate deal with Emelianenko, a situation that could have legal ramifications in light of the existing Strikeforce contract. Kogan said he’d heard the rumors as well, but that there was “no substance” to them.
