Fighters are often reluctant to name names when they talk about things like steroid use in MMA. Junior Dos Santos isn’t.
In an appearance on a Brazilian TV show produced by the UFC, the subject turned to Thiago Silva’s admission of drug use around UFC 125. Dos Santos was asked if it is common for fighters to use performance enhancers, in his experience.
“No I’ve never seen [someone taking steroids] but I think at heavyweight that it happens a lot, for sure. When you see people like Alistair Overeem, Brock Lesnar - look at the size of those guys, they’re really big,” he said.
“As [referee] Mario [Yamasaki] says, a lot of people use them but a lot of people don’t as well. I’m someone who has never used (PEDs). I think I came in the good phase of MMA and I’ve never used them.”
Dos Santos’ comments have sparked controversy, especially with him bringing Lesnar’s name into it. Lesnar has been the subject of intense speculation ever since his college wrestling days but has never tested positive for anything.
Overeem is also frequently the subject of speculation, having added a massive amount of muscle to his frame in the past few years. The speculation was fuelled by his failure to defend the Strikeforce title in that period, fighting outside the US.
But he finally defended it in May last year, defeating Brett Rogers in St. Louis, Missouri and passing all the tests he was subjected to at the time.
