Sources: Injury Forces Phil Davis Out of UFC 133 Main Event

Phil Davis has been forced to withdraw from his UFC 133 main event fight against Rashad Evans due to a knee injury, MMA Fighting has learned from sources. No word just yet on who, if anyone, Evans will now fight on the Aug. 6 card. UFC officials could not be reached for comment on Tuesday evening.

According to sources, the UFC is expected to announce Davis' injury and the new UFC 133 main event in the coming hours.

UFC 133 takes place at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Davis (9-0) recently defeated Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC Fight Night in March. The win improved his UFC record to 5-0.

Evans (15-1-1) hasn't competed due to various reasons since he beat Quinton "Rampage" Jackson at UFC 114 in May 2010.

The current UFC 133 co-main event features Rich Franklin vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

Tito Ortiz Turns Down Opportunity for Rematch With Rashad Evans

With the UFC on the hunt for a replacement for the injured Phil Davis, they turned to Tito Ortiz first.

    And Ortiz said no.

The news comes straight from UFC president Dana White, who responded to a text from MMA Fighting about Rashad Evans' likely UFC 133 opponent by saying that Machida had not yet agreed to the fight, and Ortiz had declined the opportunity.

"Tito turned it down," he told MMA Fighting.

Ortiz is coming off his first win in nearly five years, defeating Ryan Bader via first-round guillotine choke at UFC 132 on July 2.

An Ortiz-Evans fight would have been a rematch of their September 2007 fight, which ended in a controversial draw. Ortiz has previously said he hoped to have a chance to face Evans again, but with less than four weeks to prepare, he declined the opportunity.

The search continues for an opponent for Evans. White told MMA Fighting that the UFC would offer the fight to Machida, but he would be faced with the same reality: fighting on short notice.

A Machida vs. Evans fight at UFC 133 would also be a rematch; they first squared off at UFC 98, with Machida knocking out Evans in the second round to capture the UFC light-heavyweight championship.

For now, Evans remains alone, waiting for an opponent to accept the fight.

As first reported by MMA Fighting, Davis was knocked out of the August 6 main event in Philadelphia after suffering a knee injury.

    EVANS VS MACHIDA WORDT HET OOK NIET;

Multiple published reports from Brazilian news organizations suggest that UFC 133 headliner Rashad Evans is still without an opponent after Lyoto Machida declined the opportunity to fight at the Aug. 6 event on short notice.

Both Esporte and Clic RBS quoted Machida's wife Fabyola, who said that the former UFC light-heavyweight champion had decided against facing Evans with less than four weeks to prepare.

Unless Machida changes his mind, he'll be the second high-profile fighter to turn down the main event bout. Tito Ortiz also rejected a chance to step in for the injured Phil Davis.

Either fight would have been a rematch of a previous bout.

Ortiz and Evans fought at UFC 73 in July 2007, with the pair fighting to a draw. At the time, it was Evans' first step up to top-level competition. By the time he and Machida fought at UFC 98, he was the newly crowned champion. But Machida ended his reign before a successful title defense, knocking him out in the second round.

Because of his previous win over Machida, it was thought that he would be more likely to accept the fight, but it turns out that time worked against the possibility.

"He decided he would not be able to prepare in just three weeks," his wife Fabyola told Esporte. "It was very short notice and has a number of factors that need to be analyzed. So he decided he will not fight."

Default Rashad Evans vs. Tito Ortiz II official for UFC 133 Main Event

Rashad Evans vs. Tito Ortiz II official for UFC 133 Main Event

Nearly 24 hours after Phil Davis was forced out his UFC 133 bout against Rashad Evans, the hunt for a replacement has come to its conclusion.

UFC President Dana White has announced via Twitter that the August 6th main event from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania will feature Rashad Evans vs. Tito Ortiz after all.

"The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" had intially refused the fight, citing poor timing as his reason for declining. However, after Lyoto Machida also turned down the match-up, leaving the promotion short on options, it appears the UFC veteran has had a change of heart.

Ortiz (16-8-1) comes into the bout riding high off of his recent career-saving submission victory over top prospect Ryan Bader at UFC 132. The win was the former champ's first in nearly five years, having dropped four out of his previous five outings. The string of defeats were interrupted by only a single draw, which came against Evans in their first meeting back at UFC 73 in 2007.

Evans (15-1-1), meanwhile, will step into the octagon for the first time since defeating Quinton "Rampage" Jackson more than a year ago. The victory was his tenth under the UFC banner, with his lone career loss coming against Lyoto Machida in their 2009 title fight.

The once again complete UFC 133 event is set to take place August 6th from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Evans vs. Ortiz II will headline the stacked card, while Rich Franklin and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira will go head to head in the co-main event.
