Dennis Siver-Sam Stout, Brandon Vera-Eliot Marshall Added to UFC 137

A Halloween weekend card already threatening to be scary-good got a little better with the UFC's recent announcement of a lightweight fight between Dennis Siver and Sam Stout.

The promotion announced that fight, plus a light heavyweight bout between Brandon Vera and Eliot Marshall, for its Oct. 29 UFC 137 card in Las Vegas.

UFC 137 already features a welterweight title fight between champion Georges St-Pierre and Strikeforce 170-pound champion Nick Diaz, who will vacate his belt in that promotion to challenge GSP for his title. It is the first UFC-Strikeforce crossover fight since Zuffa bought the UFC's biggest rival earlier this spring.

And in a fight that could determine the next challenge for the welterweight title, former lightweight champion BJ Penn will meet Carlos Condit. Also on the card are a pair of heavyweight tilts between unbeaten Matt Mitrione and Cheick Kongo and Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic and Roy Nelson.

Siver (19-7, 8-4 UFC) has won four straight fights and eight of his last nine – including a 7-1 stretch in his second stint in the UFC. He has four fight-night bonus awards over that period, as well. After upsetting George Sotiropoulos at UFC 127 in February, Siver earlier this month beat Matt Wiman at UFC 132 by unanimous decision. Though fans at the event, and throughout the online world, disputed Siver's win and chalked it up to more bad judging, UFC president Dana White said he scored the bout in Siver's favor.

Stout (17-6-1, 6-5 UFC) has been on a tear in the lightweight division, winning four of his last five. The Canadian's only loss since 2008 was a split decision setback to Jeremy Stephens at UFC 113. Last month, his brutal knockout of Yves Edwards at UFC 131 earned him a Knockout of the Night bonus – his fourth bonus in his last five fights and sixth overall – including five Fight of the Night awards. Despite his "Hands of Stone" nickname, Stout's KO of Edwards was his first knockout, and first finish, since 2007.

Vera (11-5, 1 NC, 7-5, 1 NC UFC) returns to the cage in what could very well be a critical fight for his career. After losses to Randy Couture and Jon Jones, Vera was dominated by Thiago Silva at UFC 125 in January and was subsequently cut. But Silva's positive test for performance-enhancing drugs overturned the loss to a no contest, and Vera was given another shot in the UFC. "The Truth," a former heavyweight, started his career 8-0, and 4-0 in the UFC, including a win over former champion Frank Mir. But since, he has gone just 3-5 with the one no contest.

Marshall (10-3, 3-2 UFC) gets one more crack after a TKO loss to Luiz Cane at UFC 128 in March. He took that fight on five weeks notice, subbing for an injured Karlos Vemola. It was his return to the promotion after going 3-0 outside the UFC in 2010. After a split decision loss to Vladimir Matyushenko in March 2010, Marshall, a Season 8 veteran of "The Ultimate Fighter," was bizarrely cut by the UFC despite being 3-1 in the promotion at the time.

The UFC 137 pay-per-view will take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The UFC last visited that venue for UFC 126 in February. With the event, Mandalay Bay will pull into the lead against its down-the-street sister property, the MGM Grand Garden Arena, for most UFC events hosted. Each has currently been home to 20 UFC shows. UFC 137 will be Mandalay Bay's 21st.

Nick Diaz Jumpstarts Training for GSP Fight With 36th-Place Finish in Triathlon

Nick Diaz has his biggest fight ever in front of him, but that doesn't mean he's putting his other passion to the side just yet.

On October 29, the Strikeforce welterweight champion vacates that belt for good to take a shot at becoming the man to dethrone long-reigning UFC champion Georges St-Pierre. Last Sunday though, Diaz was still taking part in one of his favorite activities: triathlons. Diaz participated in the 30th annual Donner Lake Triathlon in Truckee, Calif., finishing 36th out of 292 entrants.

The race, characterized as an "International Distance" event, was comprised of a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer bike ride and 6.5-mile run. Diaz completed the course in 2 hours, 46 minutes and 20.4 seconds.

In each individual discipline, he clocked a 24:59.1 in the swim, 1:25:11.4 in the bicycle portion, and did the run in 53:50.5. He also finished ahead of the event's other well-known pro athlete, as former major league baseball player Eric Byrnes finished 76th with a time of 2:58.19.09.

Diaz has long been a triathlon competitor and credits the training for his reputation as one of the fittest fighters in mixed martial arts.

    http://video.aol.com/aolvideo/aol-sports/nick-diaz-diaz-vs-daley-post-fight-interview/898608649001

In fact, in a June interview with Fighters Only, Diaz specifically mentioned completing demanding triathlon courses as a recipe for his future success.

"Fighting is 90 percent mental, and knowing that 15 minutes or 25 minutes are no problem can help you sustain that mental advantage over your opponent," he said. "What's 25 minutes when I've been pushing 80 percent of my maximum aerobic threshold for three hours?"

Diaz also famously once said that if the pay was the same, he'd race triathlons instead of fighting. Since that's not the case, he'll be back in the cage for his biggest career payday in October. A winner of 10 straight fights, Diaz (25-7, one no contest) faces St-Pierre at UFC 137 in Las Vegas.

Ramsey Nijem vs. Danny Downes Slated for UFC 137

Ramsey Nijem, a finalist on the 13th season of The Ultimate Fighter, has agreed to meet Danny Downes at UFC 137, the organization announced on Thursday.

UFC 137, headlined by Georges St-Pierre vs. Nick Diaz, will air live on pay-per-view on Oct. 29 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

The Palestinian-American Nijem lost to Tony Ferguson last month at TUF Finale via first-round knockout. The loss dropped his record to 4-2 overall.

On that same card, the 25-year-old Downes (8-2) lost to Jeremy Stephens in his UFC debut via unanimous decision. "Danny Boy," a product of Duke Roufus' Roufusport gym in Milwaukee, Wisc., went 1-1 in WEC, defeating Chinese star Zhang Tiequan at WEC 53.

Nick Diaz Preps for Georges St-Pierre With Boxing Champ Andre Ward

In just over one week, Nick Diaz officially starts camp to train for his UFC welterweight championship opportunity against Georges St-Pierre. Diaz will do so surrounded by his usual partners at Team Cesar Gracie. But he'll also have the benefit of sparring with one of the world's best boxers. For the duration of his camp, he'll be spending time in the squared circle with super middleweight Andre Ward.

Ward is currently the WBA champion in his division and slotted at No. 9 on Ring Magazine's pound-for-pound world rankings.

In an interview with MMA Fighting, Gracie explained that the training sessions will benefit Diaz not only in his boxing skills but also by preparing him for one of St-Pierre's most underrated weapons: his speed.

"Andre is very quick and athletic," Gracie said. "GSP is an athletic guy. I don't think he's the best boxer in the world, but he's fast and quick out there. To get used to a guy like Andre Ward, GSP wont be really that big of a threat speed-wise if Nick gets used to Andre."

Diaz and Ward have known each other for about 10 years, when a then-teenaged Ward would visit Gracie's gym to box and he and Diaz would spar. While the two have worked together many times in the past and are friends, this marks the first time they will train together throughout an entire camp.

Like Diaz, Ward has a fight scheduled for October 29. He'll face the UK's Carl Froch in the finals of the Super Six boxing classic in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Meanwhile, Diaz faces St-Pierre 2,500 miles away in Las Vegas.

Diaz has won 10 straight fights dating back to May 2008. Once considered a light puncher, Diaz has finished six of those wins by TKO. He also has three submissions and one decision. In his last fight, he finished British striker Paul Daley via strikes in a fight-fire-with-fire kind of performance.

Of course, St-Pierre is known for much more than his striking, often using his wrestling to control and batter his opponents. Gracie said Diaz (25-7, 1 no contest) will also be importing wrestlers into his camp to prepare for that, but he added that they are not going to be overly concerned with getting into a tactical battle for where the fight takes place.

"The best thing for Nick to do is really not to try to necessarily stop that, and not care where it's going to go," he said. "It's on the ground? We'll fight on the ground. It's standing up? We'll fight standing up. Seriously, it's like, don't worry about it. A lot of people try to stop that and get in the game of who the more explosive athlete is. I don't think that's where we want to go."

About two-and-a-half months away from a fight he lobbied for, Diaz has his camp set and his goal ahead of him. Asked about Diaz's mindset this far out, Gracie said he is simply focused on the task at hand. He's always wanted to prove he's the best welterweight in the world, and there's not much more to say until he gets the job done. Is he anxious? Excited? Nope. He's just Nick being Nick.

"You can't really notice a difference with Nick," he said. "I don't think 'excitement' is a word he uses in his particular vocabulary. He's the same. It's a fight for him. He hasn't lost a fight in four years or so. The guy likes to fight. He's going to train hard. There's no difference mentally."

Default Cesar Gracie Talks Nick Diaz vs. George St. Pierre at UFC 137

    (Bloody Elbow)

It's not exactly shocking that Nick Diaz's coach Cesar Gracie has a lot to say about Nick's fight with Georges St. Pierre at UFC 137 on October 29th. Besides the fact that another Gracie disciple, Jake Shields, just fought GSP, Gracie just really likes to talk. This time he was talking to FCFighter.com, and was (somewhat surprisingly) pretty complimentary towards St. Pierre. Most of the time, anyway. What does he think of GSP's style?
"The thing is it’s really not my business how he fights; he’s not on my team, so, I truly don’t care how he fights," said Gracie, while discussing the criticisms St. Pierre has received. "Now if you’re asking me as a fan, yeah, that style is not what I like to watch. I like to watch guys that just go completely for it, take chances, and give crowds what they want, which is ‘Ultimate Fighting,’ not ‘ultimate stalling’ or anything like that."
I know, he took a shot at GSP pretty much right away. But after that, he's pretty respectful. Seriously. When asked if he thought St. Pierre would approach a fight with Diaz the same way that he approached a fight with Shields, Gracie had an interesting take on things:
"I think he’s going to approach this fight somewhat like the BJ Penn fight," said Gracie when asked how he believes St. Pierre might approach Diaz in contrast to Shields. "I think he’ll try to fight Nick the same way where he’ll tie up with him, try to keep him up against the cage, do a little dirty boxing and try to get him arm weary, maybe get some takedowns and see how that goes. He’ll probably be cautious from the top position but try to inflict damage depending on how it’s going."
"Georges is a great athlete and a pretty smart fighter," added Gracie. "His athleticism often lets him dictate where the fights going to go, and if he’s comfortable where he can take the finish, without taking too many risks, he will."
Gracie also talks about how Nick Diaz can "play the game", which is something Dana White mentioned a while ago regarding Diaz being successful in the UFC. In addition, he discusses whether he thinks Strikeforce will live on, and what they should do with another one of his fighters, Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez.

Sam Stout has withdrawn from UFC 137. According to MMAJunkie, Stout removed himself from his scheduled fight with Dennis Siver that is scheduled to take place on October 29 in Las Vegas.

There is no word on whether Stout is injured or, more likely, has pulled out of the fight due to the death of friend, trainer, and brother-in-law Shawn Tompkins.

His friend, Chris Horodecki, has withdrawn from his September 10th fight against Brad Cardinal.
