You can be electrocuted by lightning in the sea. It depends where lightning hits. As your head would be the highest point if you were standing in the water it can be hit by lightning. Then you are dead. People have been electrocuted. Lived at the beach every summer and we would never swim in the ocean during a storm.
The following is from an official lightning warning guide.
"Swimming, wading, snorkeling and scuba driving are NOT safe. Lightning can strike the water and travel some distance beneath and away from its point of contact."
Remember lightning can hit up to ten miles from the storm you notice.

COOLBAUGH TWP., Pa. - June 15, 2008 (WPVI) -- Lightning struck a group of five swimmers at a state park in Monroe County, Pennsylvania last night, killing a teenager.
Investigators say the group was swimming at Gouldsboro Beach in Gouldsboro state park in Coolbaugh Township.
Two 17-year-old boys and a 24-year-old man were in the water when the lightning bolt hit.

Lightning killed two men swimming at Fort Myers Beach on Monday while heavy rains accompanying severe thunderstorms caused minor property damage along the Suncoast and at least one traffic accident.
The two men at Fort Myers Beach died after a bolt of lightning struck them about 30 feet from shore, Lee County Sheriff's authorities said. They had not been identified by late Monday.
