UFC 133: Alexander Gustafsson Hammers Matt Hamill

Alexander Gustafsson earned a big victory Saturday night at UFC 133, showing off a diverse array of striking to hurt finish Matt Hamill by second-round TKO.

The fight had been mostly even until midway through the second round, when Gustafsson unleashed a sensational combination: He swung and missed with an uppercut, then threw a left head kick followed by a right front kick, connected with a big left hand to the chin, landed two right uppercuts to knock Hamill down, then pounced on Hamill on the ground and landed brutal punches and elbows on the ground, forcing referee Dan Miragliotta to stop the fight.

The victory was the biggest of Gustafsson's career, and he was thrilled afterward.

"I'm super happy," Gustafsson said afterward. "I can't believe it. It's a dream come true."

The 24-year-old Gustafsson is now 12-1 in his MMA career, with 11 of those 12 wins coming by stoppage in the first or second round, and his only loss coming to a very tough opponent in Phil Davis. Gustafsson is a rising star in the UFC's light heavyweight division.

UFC 133: Rory MacDonald Whips Mike Pyle

Rory MacDonald showed at UFC 133 why so many people think he's the best young welterweight in mixed martial arts, winning an absolutely brutal first-round technical knockout victory over Mike Pyle.

MacDonald hit Pyle with a huge left hand on the ground that hurt Pyle so badly that all he could do was roll over and cover himself up. From there MacDonald simply went to town on Pyle, bashing him again and again and again until the referee stopped the fight.

"I'm very happy," MacDonald said afterward. "I wish it would have gone on a little longer because I could have shown more things, but I'll just fight again soon, keep putting on great shows and I'm going to keep evolving."

If MacDonald does keep evolving, that's going to be scary for the rest of the welterweight division: MacDonald is already 12-1 and capable of beating just about anyone at 170 pounds, and he's only 21 years old.

MacDonald is an extremely promising prospect, and he may just be a future UFC welterweight champion. He showed on Saturday night that he's for real.

UFC 133: Constantinos Philippou Beats Jorge Rivera

Constantinos Philippou earned the first victory of his UFC career on Saturday night at UFC 133, winning a split decision over Jorge Rivera in a fight that left many of the fans in Philadelphia booing.

Philippou said he completely understood why the fans didn't like what they saw.

"It wasn't my best performance," Philippou said. "I'm happy I got the win, but the fight wasn't that good."

There were a few brief flurries of action, especially early in the second round, when Philippou knocked Rivera down with a hard punch, pounced on him and rained punches down. It looked for a moment like the referee was about to step in and stop the fight, but Rivera did a great job of recovering and tying Philippou up, and soon it was Rivera who was landing punches on the ground.

Late in the second Rivera pulled off a great trip-takedown, but Philippou nearly pulled off an omoplata from his back: Philippou locked up Rivera's shoulder, but he wasn't able to finish it.

Those sequences in the second round were just about the only action, however. Early in the third round there was a quick exchange of punches, but soon both Rivera and Philippou began to look exhausted, and for most of the rest of the round they were tied up on the ground without a whole lot of action, and the fans were booing at the final horn.

Two judges scored the fight 29-28 for Philippou, while one scored it 29-28 for Rivera.

The win improved Philippou's career record to 8-2, and ensured that he'll remain in the UFC. The 39-year-old Rivera, however, has lost two in a row and hasn't looked good this year. He may be just about done inside the Octagon.

Brian Ebersole Stops Dennis Hallman at UFC 133

Brian Ebersole appeared to be in big trouble in the opening minute of his UFC 133 fight with Dennis Hallman. But by the end of the first round, it was Ebersole having his hand raised.

Hallman had Ebersole's back and was close to sinking in a rear-naked choke in the first minute, but Ebersole maintained his composure, bided his time and managed to transition to the top position, and when he did he rained down hard elbows on Hallman's head, eventually landing one hard enough that Hallman went limp, and the referee stepped in to stop the fight.

The official time of Ebersole's first-round TKO victory was 4 minutes, 28 seconds.

After the fight, Ebersole said he was never worried, even when Hallman appeared to have him in trouble early on.

"I came out in a bit of a daze and got taken down, but I've been there with black belts before in this whole training camp -- I knew I could get out of there," Ebersole said.

Ebersole has been fighting professionally for more than a decade, but he never got a shot at the UFC until this year. Now he's 2-0 in the UFC, having beaten Chris Lytle in February, and now Hallman at UFC 133. Ebersole was 60 fights into his MMA career before he got called up to the big show, but it was worth the wait. He's an impressive presence in the welterweight division.

UFC 133: Vitor Belfort Knocks Out Yoshihiro Akiyama

Vitor Belfort hits as hard as anyone in the middleweight division in mixed martial arts, and he showed that once again on Saturday night.

In the co-main event at UFC 133, Belfort made short work of Yoshihiro Akiyama, connecting with a left hand that knocked Akiyama down and several more punches on the ground, then letting Akiyama up for just an instant before finishing him off with a few more hard punches that left him out cold on the canvas.

The official time of the first-round knockout victory was 1 minute, 52 seconds. It was a great bounce-back victory for Belfort, who was returning to the Octagon for the first time since getting knocked out himself by middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

"I'm back," Belfort said afterward. "I feel great."

The victory improved Belfort's professional MMA record to 20-9, including 14 wins by knockout or TKO. Akiyama falls to 13-4, and he's now on a three-fight losing streak.

Rashad Evans Beats Tito Ortiz at UFC 133

Rashad Evans returned to the Octagon after more than a year away and showed why he deserves to be the No. 1 contender in the light heavyweight division, beating Tito Ortiz by second-round technical knockout on Saturday night in the main event at UFC 133.

Ortiz put up a good fight, but he wasn't in the same class as Evans, who hurt him with ground and pound at the end of the first round and finished him with ground and pound at the end of the second round.

The official time of Evans' technical knockout victory was 4 minutes, 48 seconds of the second round.

"I feel great," Evans said afterward. "I feel like all the hard work, all the trials and tribulations have paid off."

The first round featured four minutes of back-and-forth action, with Ortiz successfully taking Evans down, Evans landing repeated punches to Ortiz's head, and Ortiz landing big knees to Evans' body. But with a minute to go in the first round Evans took control: Evans picked Ortiz up, slammed him to the ground, and bashed him until the round ended.

Ortiz looked tentative at the start of the second round after the way Evans hurt him at the end of the first, but when Evans went for a takedown, Ortiz sunk in a guillotine choke and had it tight. Evans did, however, manage to pull his head free, and once he did he transitioned into side control. From there Evans just kept going at Ortiz, and Ortiz began to weaken. With about 30 seconds left in the second round Evans landed a big knee to Ortiz's midsection, and when Ortiz keeled over, Evans finished him off with punches to the head.

The victory improves Evans' record to 16-1-1 and earns him a shot at the UFC light heavyweight title, which will be contested between Jon Jones and Rampage Jackson next month.

"I'm getting my belt back," Evans said.

Ortiz, who falls to 16-9-1, deserves credit for taking the fight on short notice, and giving it his all. But he acknowledged afterward, "Rashad beat me at my best. ... Rashad's the better man."

Sterk gevochten van Evans! Mooi ook dat Tyrone in de hoek mocht staan bij hem. Blijkbaar heeft Rashad genoten van de oefensessies met hem

Wel koel om Tyrone in de ring te zien. Rashad was erg goed.
