Junie Browning Taps Out to Strikes at MMA Fight Pit Genesis

The former Ultimate Fighter bad boy Junie Browning isn't a bad boy anymore -- he's just a bad fighter.

Browning lost by first round submission Saturday night at MMA Fight Pit Genesis, tapping out when Jacob Clark got on top of him and started raining down punches and elbows. It was the kind of loss that calls into question whether Browning really wants to be a fighter at all.

Clark did a nice job of avoiding Browning's early submission attempts and eventually got on top of Browning on the ground and started pummeling him, and Browning didn't have much of an answer: He covered up at first, and then tapped out when the elbows started connecting.

The official time of the stoppage was 4 minutes, 18 seconds of the first round.

Browning weighed in at 162.25 pounds -- a whopping 7.25 over the lightweight limit -- and was noticeably chubbier than he had been on The Ultimate Fighter. He doesn't appear to be committed to MMA.

The victory was a solid one for Clark, who improves his record to 9-3. But the real story is that Browning, who was once the focal point of the UFC's reality show, now looks like he has no business in the cage.

Houston Alexander Wins MMA Fight Pit: Genesis Main Event

n a lackluster main event to conclude the first pay-per-view fight card put on by the upstart MMA Fight Pit promotion, Houston Alexander defeated Razak Al-Hassan when the ringside doctor checked Al-Hassan's hand after the second round and ruled that Al-Hassan couldn't keep fighting because of a dislocated finger.

The official result was a second-round technical knockout win for Alexander, but the main event at MMA Fight Pit: Genesis wasn't a great fight for Alexander. There wasn't a lot of action, and the fans in Albuquerque booed during much of the bout.

Alexander has always been known for having power in his hands, and he showed off his power a couple of times by dropping Al-Hassan with a big jab in the first round and again with a right cross in the second round. But Alexander wasn't letting his hands go often enough: He looked tentative for much of the fight and didn't do a lot of damage other than those two big punches. Alexander said afterward that he felt that he had to be cautious after knocking Al-Hassan down because he worried that Al-Hassan would recover quickly.

"Just when you think you've got a guy, he recovers," Alexander said. "I thought I had him but I wanted him to stand back up."

That turned out to be a winning strategy for Alexander, but it wasn't the kind of fight that most MMA fans willing think was worth their money on pay-per-view. It's going to be tough for MMA Fight Pit to make it to a second pay-per-view event.

Jens Pulver Beats Coty Wheeler at MMA Fight Pit: Genesis

Jens Pulver, the former UFC lightweight champion who has spent the last few years looking like a washed-up fighter who's hanging on too long, finally earned a victory over a legitimate opponent on Saturday night.

Pulver beat Coty Wheeler by second-round technical knockout at the MMA Fight Pit: Genesis event in Albuquerque. For Pulver, it was just his third win in his last 10 fights, and although he didn't look great inside the cage, it was nice for fans of Pulver to see him win at all: After Pulver exited the WEC on a five-fight losing streak last year, some people thought they'd never see him win a fight again.

The fight itself was a strange one, marked by Pulver hurting Wheeler on the feet but failing to follow up. Pulver knocked Wheeler down with a big left hand in the first round and appeared to have Wheeler hurting and in big trouble, but Pulver was hesitant to engage on the ground and risk getting submitted, and so he let Wheeler up, and Wheeler was able to survive the round. In the second round it happened again: Pulver knocked Wheeler down and just stood there, as if he was expecting the referee to stop the fight even though Wheeler wasn't out.

However, after Wheeler got up Pulver continued hurting him on the feet, and eventually after he knocked Wheeler down again, the referee stepped in to stop the fight and hand Pulver the TKO victory.

MMA Fight Pit announcer Jason Chambers said after Pulver's victory that it "could be the rebirth of Jens Pulver." That, however, is overly optimistic: At age 36, Pulver is past the point where he's going to have a rebirth.

But at least Pulver got a win. For Pulver, that represents progress.
