    Shawn Tompkins dead at 37

Reports indicate that MMA trainer Shawn Tompkins has passed away. He was 37 years old. No details on the cause of death. Mike Straka broke the story on Twitter:

Guys, it is with great sadness that I report the passing of our great friend & trainer Shawn Tompkins. Details developing. Autopsy pending.
Tompkins had a short fight career in 2000-2001, losing all four of his professional bouts. He moved on to training fighters full time, taking over the Los Angeles Anacondas from Bas Rutten before moving his team to Xtreme Couture in 2007.
In August 2009, he resigned from Xtreme Couture and moved over to the TapouT Research and Development Training Center.
Tompkins trained Sam Stout, Chris Horodecki, Mark Hominick, Goran Reljic, Vitor Belfort, and Wanderlei Silva at various points during their careers.
Bloody Elbow sends condolences to Tompkins friends and family.

Veteran lightweight John Gunderson today told MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com
) that Tompkins "didn't wake up," but he was still unclear on the details surrounding his passing.
Longtime friend and confidant Chris Horodecki said the trainer was in Canada and had spoken to him yesterday but was unaware of the bad news when contacted today.
Additional sources ultimately confirmed the trainer's death with MMAjunkie.com, though details weren't immediately available.

Sam Stout: Autopsy Showed Shawn Tompkins Died of Heart Attack

Shawn Tompkins, the renowned mixed martial arts trainer that died on Sunday morning, passed away of a heart attack, according to his brother-in-law, UFC fighter Sam Stout.

Under Ontario law, privacy exemptions keep autopsy information from public view, but Stout revealed the results of the Monday autopsy to The London Free Press, an Ontario newspaper.

"I don't know what to say," Stout told the paper. "It's not supposed to be happen to a healthy 37-year-old person. Who would think he had to get checked out for that?"

Stout also told the newspaper that funeral arrangements would be made on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Tompkins' management team, AMR Group, is setting up a Shawn Tompkins Memorial Fund, which is accepting contributions to help Tompkins' widow Emilie with burial costs.

Tompkins shot to fame in the MMA world with a core group of three fighters who were also from Ontario: Stout, Mark Hominick and Chris Horodecki.

He also spent time training former champions like Randy Couture and Vitor Belfort.

At the time of his death, the 37-year-old Tompkins was in Ontario working with some of his younger fighters. According to those that were with him, he went to sleep after an event and never woke up.
