Ik kan Nog best begrijpen, maar het mooie vind ik toch omtezien hoe mensen hier om kunnen ragen. Ieder zo zijn eigen mening, als hij het niet cool vind dat een homo met hem grappled dan vind ik het best.

Ik kom al een paar jaar op MF, maar ik lees met verbazing sommige reacties, wat triest hoe sommige reageren. Vol met vooroordelen en beeldvorming over homo's. Vraag jezelf eens al hoeveel homo's er vechtsport trainen, en daarna hoeveel er seksuele toespelingen hebben gemaakt? Ik denk dat je op 0% uitkomt.. Dus waar maken sommige een ophef om niets! leef en laat leven.. Blijkbaar zegt dit meer over een aantal MF leden die zich in de dojo wel bezighouden met seksuele fantasieën..

Will MMA ever see a gay fighter?

First off, I’m not saying we NEED to have a gay or lesbian MMA fighter. Personal lives are too intertwined with private lives in today’s Facebook, Twitter, TMZ, and whatever else kind of media driven mediums we have available now. For some reason, being a public figure means the entire world is entitled to know everything about you, and somehow has the right to judge you for those things.

My point here is that with a large gay and lesbian community in N.America alone, the odds that at least one professional MMA fighter doesn’t fall into that category is slim. But even if one were gay, why would they want to come out when faced with a perceived negative reaction from the sports world?

On May 16th, 2001, Phoenix Suns president Rick Welts finally decided it was time to let the world now he was a gay man in the sports world, and it drew mixed reactions.

Some NBA players embraced Welts for his courage to share in the “manly” world known as professional sports. Over all the years I can remember, not one current professional athlete has ever publically admitted they were gay, and many can understand 100% why they would choose not to.

Suns point guard, and 2 time NBA MVP, Steve Nash commented on Welts decision to go public awhile back:

Q. Rick Welts, the Suns’ chief executive, recently announced that he was gay. How do you think he’ll be received by the players?

A. I don’t think the players on our team care. Not a lot of guys on the team have a lot of contact with Rick, including myself. Obviously, I have a ton of respect for him and what he does for the organization. I think he’s great at what he does.

Q. Is the N.B.A. ready for an openly gay player?

A. If a player in the locker room came out, it would come and go quickly, too. I really don’t think it’s a big issue anymore. I think it would be surprisingly accepted, and a shorter shelf life than maybe we would imagine. I think the time has come when it should happen soon. I think it will be something that won’t take on this life of its own. It won’t be the O. J. trial.

While some may share Nash’s views, the fact is that many do not. Kobe Bryant and Joakim Noah were fined a total of 150000 dollars this past year for making gay slurs during games. Even if it was just a spur of the moment comment, it goes to show the lack of respect and caring for homosexuals. Since when is it ok to use a derogatory word about a black man, an Asian man, whatever else, and pass it off as “a moment of stupidity?

Comments such as those, as well as Joe Rogan’s very public use of a gay slur last November, UFC's Joe Rogan Uses Anti-Gay Slur Towards Reporter - SBNation.com, are most defiantly making it difficult for any gay or lesbian MMA fighters to want to come out to the world.

How can they be expected to share something so personal when they see things like Rogan’s comments used and basically brushed aside by many people as “funny” or “nothing to get worked up over”? It may be nothing to us, but for a gay or lesbian fighter, those comments can be devastating, and make them want to hide that much longer.

We all know “that guy” who thinks it’s funny to make a anti-gay remark during a fight, “Oh I wouldn’t wanna be in his full guard” or ”Eww, his junk is in his face, he probably likes it though”. To some that could be viewed as “funny” but since when does being gay mean that you can’t even be in contact with another man or woman?

You can’t “get” gay from contact, and a fighter isn’t going to try and violate another in the cage solely because they are gay.

It is attitudes like that that will make it almost impossible for any gay fighter to have the confidence to share his or hers personal lives with the world, and that is beyond sad, since no person should have to hide who they are because there are ignorant people that find gay slurs or mocking funny.

I’m sure most readers will see this and assume two names off the bat, I won’t say any names obviously, but so what if they are gay? Would that make then any less of a fighter? Would it somehow negate the years of training and work they have put in to achieve the success they have reached now?

A lot of straight men and women can’t grasp the seriousness of this issue, and that is one of the biggest problems here. I can’t imagine the strain and stress of being a professional anything at the highest level and have to hide a big part of my life just so people don’t judge me or make fun of them.

Gay men or women are still men and women. They are professional athletes in this case, and should receive the same respect whether they are straight or not. I’m not saying we need a petition to get a fighter to come out, just that we should treat any potential gay or lesbian athletes as we would any person, as a human being with a talent that should supercede their lifestyle choices.

I hope I’m around to see the day when this does happen, as it should be a monumental moment, regardless of it is a big name fighter or someone fighting on the local circuit.

A Canadian court has fined a comic CA$15,000 (US$15,745) and senteneced him to a lifetime ban from performing for insulting a lesbian couple that heckled him in a nightclub four years ago.
The British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal ordered stand-up comedian Guy Earle to pay the money to Lorna Pardy, 32, and banned him for life from performing in any venue in British Columbia. Salam Ishmail, who owns the Vancouver restaurant where the incident took place, was also ordered to pay Pardy US$7,500.

Dat ging niet over de NBA, NFL of MLB. En verder denk ik niet dat je een boete of beroepsverbod zou krijgen voor beledegingen van hetero's, Christenen, blanken in het algemeen. In zulke gevallen snijdt het mes meestal aan een kant.
