Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal 17 dec. (Gegard Mousasi vs Ovince St. Preux)

Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi is set to make his return to the cage on Dec. 17, when he'll take on the up-and-coming Ovince St. Preux in a fight that should answer a lot of questions about just what kind of competition St. Preux is ready for -- and whether Mousasi has learned to stop a takedown yet.

St. Preux is a former University of Tennessee football player who shifted his focus to MMA in 2008 and has taken enormous strides in the last year and a half. At the start of 2010 had a 3-4 record and hadn't done anything noteworthy in the cage. But he has really come on of late, improving his record to 11-4 and beating solid opponents including Jason Day, Antwain Britt, Benji Radach and Abongo Humphrey.

None of those opponents is on the same level of Mousasi, who's one of the most talented fighters in the world. Then again, while OSP has been dramatically improving, Mousasi has had an up-and-down couple of years: While fighting in Japan, he's won three easy first-round stoppages over Jake O'Brien, Tatsuya Mizuno and Hiroshi Izumi. But he's struggled in the United States, losing to Muhammed Lawal and fighting Keith Jardine to a draw. In both of those fights, Mousasi showed serious problems stopping takedowns, and until he solves those problems, he's going to have a tough time winning a decision in the United States, where judges frequently favor the fighter who's on top on the ground.

St. Preux is a great athlete who's physically stronger than Mousasi, and it's entirely possible that he could take Mousasi down repeatedly and beat him by decision. The more likely scenario, however, is that the much more sophisticated Mousasi finishes St. Preux.

The Mousasi-St. Preux contest is the first fight Strikeforce has announced for the December 17 card, but other fights expected to take place at that event include Gilbert Melendez defending his lightweight belt against Jorge Masvidal, and Cris Cyborg defending her women's 145-pound belt against an as-yet undetermined opponent.

Zo zonde dit. Na zijn winst op Babalu in Strikeforce piekte zijn carriere maar daarna is het wel erg stil geworden en lijkt het momentum wel weg.
Dit is weer zo een pot waar hij niks mee opschiet. Wint ie dan vindt iedereen het logisch, verlies je deze pot dan gaat het nog harder naar beneden.

Waarom vecht Mousasi nog niet in de UFC is mijn grote vraag?

Goed om te horen dat Mousasi weer de ring in gaat. Maat het is denk wel een teleurstelling voor hem en het publiek. In zijn bijdrage in Ringsports gaf hij nog tegen de winnaar Roger Gracie - King Mo te willen vechten. Nu mag niet eens tegen de verliezer daarvan. Zuur hoor....

Hoop dat hij die St. Preux overklast en voor de belt mag.

Gilbert Melendez vs. Jorge Masvidal Official for Strikeforce in December

Gilbert Melendez will have to wait a little longer to fight in the UFC.

Strikeforce announced on Tuesday that "El Nino" will in fact defend his lightweight title against Jorge Masvidal on Dec. 17 in San Diego, Calif. The card will take place at Valley View Casino Center, and tickets go on sale to the public on Saturday, Oct. 15.

Melendez met with UFC president Dana White over the weekend to discuss the possibility of unifying the Strikeforce and UFC lightweight title but no deal was reached.

"I just wanted to discuss my future with the organization," Melendez said Monday on The MMA Hour. "I just expressed that I want to fight the best."

Melendez (19-2) has won his last five fights in a row. He most recently defeated Tatsuya Kawajiri via first-round TKO at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley, which also took place in San Diego.

Masvidal (22-6) is 2-0 since returning to Strikeforce, defeating Billy Evangelista and KJ Noons.

Also officially announced for the card is Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos vs. Hiroko Yamanaka for the Strikeforce women's featherweight title, Gegard Mousasi vs. Ovince St. Preux and local favorite KJ Noons is expected to meet Billy Evangelista.

The main card will air live on Showtime.

Gina Carano Not Scheduled for Strikeforce's Dec. 17 Card

Another full calendar year will go by without Gina Carano competing in an MMA cage.

Carano, still arguably the most famous women's MMA fighter in the world, will not be fighting on Strikeforce's Dec. 17 card in San Diego, sources close to the event confirmed with MMAFighting.com. There had been some speculation that Carano was targeting a return to action on the card.

The 29-year-old Carano last competed for Strikeforce in Aug. 2009. She lost via first-round TKO to Cris Cyborg in the last women's fight to headline a major Strikeforce card on Showtime. Since then, Carano has pursued a movie career and stayed out of the MMA spotlight, rarely doing media appearances or showing up to fights.

She announced her return to Strikeforce in February, however, an undisclosed illness forced her to pull out of her June 18 fight against Sarah D'Alelio. As of right now, Strikeforce has no plans for her return to the cage.

So the next time you want to see Carano in action, it will have to be on the silver screen when she stars in her first motion picture, "Haywire," which is set to be released on Jan. 20.

The promotion's year-end show will consist of a four-fight main card, which will air live on Showtime:

Tja als het niet zo vlot tegen worstelaars zit je niet goed in de LHW van de UFC. Evans, Jackson, Bader, Ortiz, Matysenko, etc etc

Ik denk dat hij ons positief zal verrassen met z'n worstelen. Ok, worstelen is duidelijk het zwakst bij hem, maar ik denk ook dat het er erger uitzag in z'n laatste partijen dan het in werkelijkheid is. Heeft gewoon te maken met welke instelling je een gevecht ingaat.
