Default UFC 142: Aldo vs. Mendes

The Ultimate Fighting Championship won't wait long to return to spiritual home of mixed martial arts.

Following this past August's ultra-successful UFC 134 event, the UFC will return to Rio de Janeiro's HSBC Arena on Jan. 14 for an event expected to serve as UFC 142.

MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com
) today confirmed the booking with UFC officials.

The UFC has yet to make an official announcement regarding the event, and potential fight bookings for the card have yet to be revealed

UFC president Dana White first revealed the company's plan to Brazilian outlet UOL but did not confirm the date or location. UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta recently completed a trip to Brazil, where he was said to be completing the UFC's January return to the country, as well as scouting out possible future host cities in the South American nation.

On Thursday, White said Brazil will soon host the first-ever international version of "The Ultimate Fighter" and should also expect to see the promotion make frequent visits to the country.

"It's a huge market for us," White said of Brazil. "It's incredible down there. We're going to do as many as we possibly can."

The UFC is also expected to announce a new partnership with Brazilian television network Globo. Following Thursday's pre-UFC 137 press conference, White was asked about a rumored deal but declined to offer any comment.

eerste gevecht staat trouwens al vast, namelijk

MW: Vitor Belfort vs Anthony Johnson

Jose Aldo, Chad Mendes Square Off for Featherweight Gold at UFC 142

Less than a month after successfully defending his UFC featherweight belt, champion Jose Aldo has his next assignment.

The Brazilian will return home and attempt to extend his current run of dominance over the division in a stern test against undefeated American Chad Mendes. The bout will take place at UFC 142 in Brazil, though an exact venue has yet to be officially announced.

UFC president Dana White broke the news to FoxSports.com on Monday night.

The matchup comes as no surprise. Shortly after Aldo defended the belt in a win over Kenny Florian at UFC 136 on October 8, White said that Mendes was his likely next challenger.

Aldo (20-1) has not lost a fight in six years, and has won 13 in a row. Since winning the WEC championship in Nov. 2009, Aldo has defeated all four of his challengers, even as the promotion was absorbed by the UFC and the belt was re-christened as the UFC championship.

Mendes is a perfect 11-0 in his career. He debuted under the Zuffa banner in March 2010 and has won all six of his fights. His most recent bout came against Rani Yahya at UFC 133, a fight which he won by unanimous decision.

Some have speculated that Mendes, a former two-time collegiate wrestling All-American, could give Aldo trouble by employing his grinding style. Thus far in his career, though, Aldo has been up to the challenge. According to FightMetric, he's only been taken down twice in his last 10 fights, and has successfully defended 94 percent of the takedown attempts against him.

The Aldo vs. Mendes fight is the first one officially announced by the UFC for the January 14 event.

Anthony Johnson Moves to Middleweight, Will Face Vitor Belfort at UFC 142

Anthony Johnson has finally made the step most felt was inevitable, moving up a division to middleweight.

It won't take him long to get tested at his new home. The fearsome slugger will step right into the upper echelon of the division when he takes on Vitor Belfort at UFC 142.

The promotion confirmed the matchup on Tuesday.

Johnson has spent his entire UFC career at 170 pounds, though he's struggled to make weight on more than one occasion. The timing of the move comes as a bit of a surprise though, as Johnson returned from a 16-month absence earlier this year and got off to a 2-0 start with wins over Dan Hardy and Charlie Brenneman.

Belfort would represent his highest-ranked opponent since losing to Josh Koscheck in November 2009.

Johnson is 10-3 overall with seven knockouts, and has won five of his last six.

Belfort recently rebounded from a UFC 126 title fight loss to Anderson Silva by knocking out Yoshihiro Akiyama in August. That upped his record to 20-9.

UFC 142 will take place on January 14 from a yet-to-be determined location in Brazil. The only other officially announced bout is a featherweight title bout with champion Jose Aldo attempting to defend his belt against Chad Mendes.

Ik heb idd ook een gevoel dat A. Silva nog aan die card wordt toegevoegd. Sonnen, anyone . En het is nog niet zeker of het in Rio wordt gehouden. Brasilia zou ook een mooie locatie zijn.

UFC 142: Aldo vs. Mendes/ Belfort vs. Johnson

It’s official! President of UFC, Dana White announced today the return of the biggest MMA event of the world to Brazil on January 14th of 2012, and the main event will be a title fight.

Everything points out for the edition number 142 of the event to happen on Rio de Janeiro, but specific place, and even the city, haven’t been defined yet. HSBC Arena, which hosted the show on August 27th, is the most likely option for UFC 142.

Jose Aldo, featherweight champ, will have to face the so far undefeated Chad Mendes. While Aldo is coming from title defenses against Mark Hominick and Kenny Florian, the American is coming from a triumph over the Brazilian Rani Yahya.

One of the stars of the first edition of UFC in Brazil, in 1998, Vitor Belfort will be back to the country on the show as well. His opponent will be Anthony Johnson, who’ll be fighting for the first time among the middleweights.

"Some people have so much respect for their superiors
they have none left for themselves."

Thiago Tavares-Sam Stout, Edson Barboza-Terry Etim Slated for UFC 142 in Brazil

Thiago Tavares and Edson Barboza will compete in their home country of Brazil when they face Sam Stout and Terry Etim, respectively, at UFC 142 on Jan. 14 at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro.

The UFC revealed the lightweight matchups on Tuesday via Twitter.

In 2011, Tavares (16-4-1) was brutally knocked out by Shane Roller in March and bounced back with a TKO over Spencer Fisher at UFC 134 in August. Canadian striker Stout (17-6-1) is on a two-fight win streak and was supposed to face Dennis Siver last month at UFC 137 but bowed out due to injury.

Much talked about for his devastating leg kicks, Barboza (9-0) has won all three of his UFC fights with his last two named Fight of the Nights. In August, he beat Ross Pearson in a split decision. Etim out of England is coming off a spectacular win this past Saturday at UFC 138 where he submitted Eddie Faaloloto with a guillotine choke in 17 seconds. UFC 142 will be Etim's tenth UFC fight and his ninth outside of the U.S.

In the co-main events for the UFC 142 card, Jose Aldo will put his featherweight belt on the line against Chad Mendes and Vitor Belfort will meet Anthony Johnson in a middleweight showdown.
