Spike TV Will Counter-Program Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis on Fox

The UFC's TV contract with Spike runs out at the end of the year, and Spike has already announced that it plans to aggressively counter-program the UFC's programming with its new TV partner, Fox.

Spike sent out a press release on Wednesday announcing that it will air a Saturday night programming lineup on January 28 entitled UFC Unleashed: Evans vs. Davis, which will run simultaneously with the UFC on Fox card headlined by Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis.

Spike's lineup will run from 4 PM to midnight and feature fights involving Evans and Davis, as well as Chael Sonnen, Mark Munoz and Michael Bisping, all of whom are also fighting on the Fox card on January 28.

For Spike, this is basically an attempt to use the powerful marketing of the UFC and Fox against them: Fox will market Evans and Davis during NFL games, and the UFC will put Evans and Davis on billboards, and when fight night rolls around, some viewers flipping through the channels will end up watching their old fights on Spike.

Labeling the event "Evans vs. Davis" may do a disservice to some viewers who will set their DVRs for "Evans vs. Davis" only to realize after the fact that they recorded the wrong program, although it's hard to imagine many viewers will be fooled into watching the wrong fight. But this is the way Spike programming is likely to look for the remainder of 2012: When UFC fighters are live in the Octagon, Spike will treat its viewers to a heavy dose of reruns from the same fighters.

Chael Sonnen Admits He Was 'The Bad Guy' Against Mark Munoz in College

CHICAGO -- Chael Sonnen was his usual brash-talking self when promoting his upcoming fight with Mark Munoz on Wednesday, even acknowledging that when he wrestled against Munoz in college, he took a cheap shot -- and he's not sorry about it.

Munoz, who was an NCAA champion wrestler at Oklahoma State, has said in the past that when he took on Sonnen during an Oklahoma State-Oregon wrestling meet in college, Sonnen illegally attempted a jiu jitsu-style knee bar in an attempt to hurt him.

"When we wrestled, Chael -- in the heat of the battle -- he got a knee bar and cranked on it a little bit," Munoz said. "It happens. You get things tweaked on and everything and that's what happens sometimes. The ref is there to stop it. It's water underneath the bridge now. Chael has fought for a long time. He's a great fighter and it's going to be an honor to fight him. He's got awesome MMA wrestling, I've got great wrestling. You're going to see a lot of wrestling going on."

It was magnanimous of Munoz to say that Sonnen's actions came in the heat of the moment, but Sonnen said that actually wasn't the case.

"Mark's explanation, the heat of the moment, I appreciate it," Sonnen said. "But it was a calculated and premeditated event."

Sonnen said he's perfectly willing to play the role of the bad guy who tried to hurt his opponent in a college wrestling match, although he's long since stopped thinking about his college wrestling career. What Sonnen is focused on is having a shot at Munoz in the Octagon.

"I assure you," Sonnen said. "On January 28, I will be ready. It will be one more in the win column, one more on the mantel and one more for the bad guy."

Dana White: Rashad Evans' Penn State Joke 'One of the Dumbest Things You Could Say'

UFC president Dana White is well aware that Rashad Evans stepped over the line with his pre-fight trash-talk when he referenced the Penn State sex abuse scandal while taking a verbal jab at former Nittany Lions wrestler Phil Davis on Wednesday.

As White told reporters following Thursday's UFC 140 press conference, he made sure Evans knew it too.

"We talked." said White, who called Evans' remark "one of the dumbest things you could say," in light of the child abuse allegations against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. According to White, he didn't have to convince Evans that he'd made a mistake in using the story as a topical reference point at the UFC on FOX presser in Chicago yesterday.

"It's not like I'm dealing with stupid people here," White said. "It's one thing when you're dealing with dummies. When you're dealing with people who are really stupid, it's tough to talk to them. But when you call a guy who's an intelligent guy, he gets it. He knows."

Evans brought the heat on himself when exchanging words with Davis at the press conference, telling the former NCAA Division I wrestling champ: "I guarantee you'll be the first one to take a shot cause I'm going to put my hands on you worse than that dude did them other kids at Penn State."

Evans, who wrestled at Michigan State, later told MMA Fighting that he has nothing against Davis, but was merely trying to play up a rivalry for entertainment value.

"I have plenty of respect for him as a fighter and as a person," said Evans. "But when it comes to competing with me, I gotta let my mouth go a little bit."

He let it go too far this time, White said, but the UFC president sounded hesitant to take any official punitive action over the remark.

"The whole thing with me is people are looking to me, and I saw a couple of stupid stories that were written, people who want attention -- you know who those people are," White said. "What do you want me to do? You want me to have our lawyers draw something up and I'll come out and read it to you guys? You know, he said something stupid. It's probably one of the dumbest things you could say. He gets it, and he knows it was a stupid thing to say, and we'll see what happens."

Shonie Carter Told by UFC Matchmaker That UFC on FOX 2 Card Is Full

Although there's no spot currently for him on the card, UFC veteran Shonie Carter says he won't stop his campaign to take part in the Jan. 28 UFC on FOX 2 event.

Carter is asking for a one-fight deal with the UFC to compete on the undercard of what will be the biggest MMA card in his hometown of Chicago.

On Wednesday, Carter attended the UFC on FOX 2 press conference not as a fighter, but a journalist.

"It actually hurts to be here and be a journalist and thinking fight at the same time," Carter told MMA Fighting, standing on the floor of the United Center. "These young men, I've watched them when they were rookies. They grew up watching me and I have the upmost and profound respect for all of them and I don't ever quit. I believe in fighting the good fight and until that first bell rings, or until the weigh-ins are over, I am going to campaign."

At the press conference, UFC president Dana White replied to a reporter's question about Carter by saying "I think he needs to talk to [UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva," before sending out a "Good luck, Shonie."

Carter has tried to no avail, but is holding out hope for an opening.

"I have reached out to [Silva] and he said the card was full," Carter told MMA Fighting. "But I'm still working out like a mad man."

On paper, Carter doesn't deserve consideration on the card, having lost six of his last seven fights. And Carter, who is best known for a spinning backfist knockout over Matt Serra at UFC 31, hasn't competed in the UFC in five years.

But to Carter's credit, the former WEC champion has been a staple in the Chicago martial arts scene for over a decade and is a well-liked figure in the sport.

Carter explains fighting at the United Center would be a special moment for him and a thank you to all his hometown fans. Carter grew up in the West Side of Chicago and he currently lives so close to the arena that he's just two bus rides away.

"11-and-a-half minutes, I timed it," Carter said with a laugh.

While it might be a long shot, it's not stopping Carter from trying.

"I'm going to keep bugging [Silva]," Carter said. "Until he says yes."

Demian Maia: I Know I Can Submit Michael Bisping

Demian Maia thinks he can be the first person to hand Michael Bisping a submission loss.

"He has a good submission defense but it doesn't matter," Maia recently told MMA Fighting. "I've fought guys before that have never been submitted before many times and I've submitted them. I know I have the chance to submit him."

It will also be his strategy when he meets Bisping at UFC on FOX 2 on Jan. 28. Maia acknowledges this fight against Bisping will be a great opportunity for him to showcase his jiu-jitsu skills again.

Maia, who held submission wins in his first five UFC fights, has seen his six most recent fights end in decision. Maia explains the lack of finishes have been due to more challenging opponents and his focus on improving in other areas of MMA.

"It's expectations," Maia told the press at last week's UFC on FOX 2 conference. "I fight everytime tougher and toughers guys. I took time to learn more boxing, thai boxing and even wrestling. I cannot just train jiu-jitsu anymore. I need to be an MMA fighter."

Maia last fought at UFC 136 in October, outpointing Jorge Santiago after three rounds. Meanwhile, Bisping is coming off a win against Jason "Mayhem" Miller on Dec. 3.

Maia was informed on Dec. 2 the possibility of meeting the winner of Bisping-Miller later at UFC on FOX 2. After Saturday's fights, Bisping had to return home and decide if he would make a quick turnaround and fight again on the Jan. 28 card. The fight wasn't official until last Wednesday's UFC on FOX 2 press conference at the United Center.

"They just set me the flight tickets yesterday, like two hours before I went to the airport," Maia said. "We just came here."

In fact, Maia didn't sign the bout agreement until after the conference.

If Maia wants to submit Bisping though, he'll have to take him down first. Bisping has done a solid job keeping the fight standing, winning nine of his 15 UFC fights via (T)KO.

"Sometimes people underrate him, I don't know why," Maia said. "But I think he's tough, he's good. He's only lost three fights in his career."

Lavar Johnson Moves From Strikeforce to UFC for Chicago FOX Event

As Zuffa moves forward on its plans to fold Strikeforce's heavyweight division into the UFC, the company announced Tuesday that Lavar Johnson will be the next Strikeforce heavyweight to set foot in the Octagon.

Johnson will fight Joey Beltran at UFC on Fox 2 on January 28 in Chicago.

The hard-punching Johnson won three straight fights on Strikeforce Challengers cards in 2009 and 2010, but this year he lost to Shane Del Rosario in an alternate bout in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, then bounced back down to Challengers and lost to Shawn Jordan. He's in a must-win situation at UFC on Fox 2, and so is Beltran, who has lost three of his last four.

The UFC also made a few other fight announcements on Tuesday afternoon:
-- Featherweight Erik Koch has suffered an injury and is out of his planned UFC 143 fight against Dustin Poirier. Koch and Poirier are two of the best young featherweights in the sport, and that fight should have been a big one. The UFC will seek a replacement to fight Poirier.

-- The 5-0 Brazilian prospect Caio Magalhaes has been signed and will make his Octagon debut in his home country against Fabio Maldonado at UFC 142. Maldonado had previously been scheduled to face Stansislav Nedkov, but he was forced to withdraw from the fight.

-- John Albert, a bantamweight who competed on the most recent season of The Ultimate Fighter and beat Dustin Pague in the Finale, will return and take a step up in quality of competition when he takes on Ivan Menjivar at the February 15 UFC on Fuel TV card in Omaha.

Paul Sass, Eddie Wineland Both Injured, Removed From UFC on FOX 2 Event

Paul Sass and Eddie Wineland recently suffered injuries and have been removed from the undercard of the Jan. 28 UFC on FOX 2 event in Chicago, the UFC announced Monday evening.

In for Sass against Evan Dunham will be Nik Lentz. Meanwhile, a new opponent for Johnny Bedford is to be announced.

With Wineland out, Mike Russow is left as the only true Chicago-area fighter currently scheduled on the card. Rashad Evans lives in downtown Chicago, but trains out of Imperial Athletics in Boca Raton, Fla.

Lentz (21-4-2) fought earlier this month, suffering his first UFC loss in a decision against Mark Bocek at UFC 140. Prior to the Dec. 10 fight, Lentz compiled a 5-0-1 (and one no contest) since starting with the UFC in September 2009.

Dunham (12-2) snapped a two-fight losing streak in September with a unanimous decision nod against Shamar Bailey at UFC Fight Night: Shields vs. Ellenberger.

Bedford (18-9-1) is a TUF 15 contestant who recently won his UFC debut in a dominant performance against the outsized Louis Gaudinot. Bedford found himself on this card as a substitute for Demetrious Johnson against Wineland. Johnson was removed from the card to face Ian McCall in the semifinals of the UFC's flyweight tournament

CM Punk Won't Escort Chael Sonnen to Octagon at UFC on FOX

WWE champion CM Punk will not escort Chael Sonnen to the Octagon prior to Sonnen's fight against Mark Munoz on Jan. 28, after all.

Punk confirmed with MMAFighting.com that WWE chairman Vince McMahon decided against allowing him to walk out to the cage with Sonnen later this month. MMA reporter FrontRowBrian first reported the news Friday afternoon.

The Punk/Sonnen pairing created a major buzz in both the MMA and professional wrestling world when it was first reported, but most assumed it was UFC president Dana White who would be against the idea of a pro wrestler walking out to the cage with a top fighter on FOX, not McMahon.

UFC on FOX, headlined by Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis, returns on Jan. 28 from the United Center in Chicago. Sonnen vs. Munoz will serve as the co-main event.

Chael Sonnen to Face Michael Bisping at UFC on FOX 2

Chael Sonnen will now take on Michael Bisping in a No. 1 contender bout at UFC on FOX 2 on Jan. 28 in Chicago, UFC president Dana White announced Tuesday.

Mark Munoz, Sonnen's previously scheduled opponent, had to withdraw due to injury, according to White. The UFC decided then to move Bisping out of his fight against Demian Maia to face Sonnen instead on the same card.

White didn't mention Maia's status on the card.

While matchup changes two weeks before a show is never ideal, Sonnen-Bisping was a matchup the UFC previously targeted. The two middleweights were in talks to coach against each other on The Ultimate Figher 14, but Jason "Mayhem" Miller was tapped to face Bisping due to the timing of Sonnen's legal issues.

Bisping (22-3), who is on a four-fight winning streak, defeated Miller by TKO last December at the TUF 14 Finale. Coming off the fight will little damage, Bisping soon after agreed to face Maia on the FOX card.

Sonnen (26-11-1) returned to action last October and submitted Brian Stann with an arm-triangle choke.

White has also made it clear the winner of Sonnen-Bisping will face champion Anderson Silva for the belt.

Chris Weidman to Face Demian Maia at UFC on FOX 2

Undefeated middleweight Chris Weidman has agreed to step in and face submissions specialist Demian Maia at the UFC on FOX 2 event just eleven days from now, UFC president Dana White announced on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon.

Maia was previously slated to face Michael Bisping on that same card, but lost his opponent when Bisping was shuffled into a fight with Chael Sonnen, replacing an injured Mark Munoz on the Jan. 28 event in Chicago.

According to White, Weidman accepted the short-notice fight against Maia after it was offered to another Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist, Rousimar Palhares, who turned it down.

Weidman comes into the fight with a perfect 7-0 record, with the last three of those wins coming in the UFC. He last competed at UFC 139 in San Jose this past November, where he choked out Tom Lawlor with a first-round D'Arce choke.

Maia, a former UFC middleweight title contender, last competed at UFC 136 in October, defeating Jorge Santiago via unanimous decision. Earlier today he wrote on Twitter that he was "very sad" his fight with Bisping wouldn't go down as scheduled "cause it would be a very important fight for me."

Once White announced that Weidman, a former All-American wrestler at Hofstra University, would be stepping in to take Bisping's place, the Brazilian middleweight responded simply, "Thanks boss!!!"

The bout is schedule to air live on FOX on Jan. 28, alongside the Bisping-Sonnen fight and the light heavyweight main event bout between former light heavyweight champ Rashad Evans and Phil Davis.
