Default UFC on FUEL;15 feb 2012: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez & Stefan Struve vs. Dave Herman

Jake Ellenberger vs. Diego Sanchez Signed to Headline First UFC on FUEL Event

Surging welterweight contender Jake Ellenberger will attempt to capture his sixth straight octagon win and thrust himself into the No. 1 contender debate on February 15, and he'll need a win over Diego Sanchez to do it.

The UFC confirmed the two will square off in the first installment of the UFC on FUEL. Previously, UFC president Dana White had said all non-title main events going forward would be five rounds, the announcement noted that the main event matchup would be a three-round bout, but no explanation was given for the change.

Ellenberger (26-5) has vaulted himself into the division's top 10 with a series of dynamic recent performances. In his most recent bout, he knocked out former No. 1 contender Jake Shields in just 53 seconds. Prior to that, he'd stopped three of four opponents via KO or TKO.

Sanchez (23-4) has captured two straight since struggling in his return to welterweight after a run at 155. In his most recent bout, he earned the judges' nod in a controversial unanimous decision against Martin Kampmann.

The UFC said the inaugural FUEL event would take place in Ellenberger's hometown of Omaha, Nebraska, though they did not specify a venue. The likely landing spot is the CenturyLink Center Omaha, an 18,300-seat arena.

The new broadcast partner, FUEL, is a unit of FOX cable networks and is expected to host over 2,000 hours of UFC programming in 2012. According to TV by the Numbers, the channel is currently available in just over 32 million U.S. households, about 27 percent of available homes.

Stefan Struve vs. Dave Herman Booked For UFC On Fuel 1

A battle featuring two middle of the pack heavyweights has been verbally agreed to as Stefan Struve and Dave "Pee Wee" Herman will go head-to-head on the UFC On Fuel 1 event, according to MMA Weekly.

Struve (22-5) is coming off a second round submission win over Pat Barry in October and has won three of his last four fights. The 23-year-old has been in the UFC since early 2009 and has a 6-3 Octagon mark.

Herman (21-2) made his UFC debut in June, earning Fight Of The Night honors in a second round TKO win over Jon Olav Einemo at UFC 131. He's been on the shelf since testing positive for marijuana before his scheduled October UFC 136 tilt with Mike Russow.

The 27-year-old denied any usage of the drug and has tested in the clear several times since his violation, clearing the way for him to return. He's won three straight and six of his last seven with five finishes to his credit.

The show was officially announced by the UFC for Wednesday, February 13 in Omaha, NE, with Jake Ellenberger vs. Diego Sanchez as the main event.
    Mooie matchup!
Kemal, kan je de titel aanpassen? Struve mag er wel bij lijkt me.

leuke match voor Struve. Herman heeft KO power , struve moet oppasen.
Maar ik zie Struve op de grond wel winnen van Herman.

Simpson vs. Markes, Brookins vs. Yahya Added to UFC on FUEL Event

The inaugural UFC on FUEL event added two new matchups on Wednesday when the UFC announced middleweight and featherweight bouts that have been agreed to.

Aaron Simpson will put his three-fight win streak on the line when he faces Brazilian Ronny Markes in a 185-pound fight, while Ultimate Fighter season 12 winner Jonathan Brookins will face submission wizard Rani Yahya.

Simpson (11-2) has tried to work his way into middleweight contention with consecutive victories over Eric Schafer, Mario Miranda and Brad Tavares, wins that came on the heels of a two-fight losing streak.

To continue that run, he'll have to beat Markes, who made his octagon debut on short notice and out-worked Karlos Vemola to a decision win in an August event. That match was contested at light-heavyweight, and in this one, Markes (12-1) will attempt to stake out some ground in the UFC's 185-pound division.

The featherweight bout between Brookins and Yahya features a pair of fighters who prefer to look for victory on the ground. Brookins (12-4) has eight of his wins by tapout, while Yahya (16-7) has 14 submission wins. Both men are coming off losses.

UFC on FUEL 1 will take place on February 15, 2012, and though the venue isn't official, it is likely to emanate from CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Nebraska. It features a main event of Diego Sanchez vs. Jake Ellenberger.

Default UFC On Fuel: With Nick Diaz Out, Jake Ellenberger Leads Welterweight Contender Pack

With Nick Diaz on the shelf for an indeterminate amount of time after failing a post UFC 143 drug test and current UFCWelterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre expected to be out until at least November, Jake Ellenberger has moved into pole position to be the next challenger to interim champion Carlos Condit's 170-pound title. That is assuming, of course, that Ellenberger can get pastDiego Sanchez in this Wednesday's UFC On Fuel main event, something he is favored heavily to do. He is clearly at the top of a mediocre pack of welterweights, a group marred by inconsistency, drawing power and a lack of notable wins.Jake EllenbergerGoing into February, Ellenberger (26-5, 5-1 UFC) was the division's hottest challenger outside of Diaz. After dropping a tight split decision to Condit in his September 2009 debut, the 26-year-old finished four of his next five opponents by T/KO including Jake Shields in just 53 seconds last September. Even if Diaz hadn't been suspended, an argument could be made that another win would put him in title contention. Now it's undeniable he'd be the No. 1 contender. While Condit hasn't been warm on a rematch with Ellenberger, he might not have a choice. It's unrealistic that the new champ is going to wait 10 months to fight Diaz when there's money and reputation to be made with a summer title defense. There's been some residual damage from the style in which he beat Diaz, a reason why the talk of a rematch this week made a lot of sense. Sitting on the sidelines for GSP doesn't make sense. Condit has to compete again before a title unification bout can happen.Johny HendricksFollowing a surprising 13-second knockout of Jon Fitch in December, the Oklahoma State wrestling champion finds himself in another surprising position: title contention if Ellenberger loses. Hendricks (12-1, 7-1 UFC) has flown under some radars but since his August 2009 debut, he's only lost once in eight Octagon battles. The Fitch KO capped a big year and the Diaz situation may open up a much bigger door for him in 2012.Jon FitchThe poster boy for the eternal winning vs. entertainment argument, the Hendricks loss greatly hurts him if Ellenberger loses. We all know the deal: Fitch (23-4-1-1, 13-2-1 UFC) isn't a box office draw and constantly has had to defend himself for his fighting style. After his loss to GSP in his only title shot, Fitch won five in a row before going to a draw to B.J. Penn. With the defeat to Hendricks, the UFC has their out in not giving the AKA product another title opportunity, thus avoiding a potential champion that's perceived as bland. Fair? No, but it's reality.Diego SanchezSo what of Ellenberger's opponent this Wednesday? Would a win put Sanchez (23-4, 12-4 UFC) in Dana White's mix? It's an outside possibility as it would be his third win in a row after consecutive losses to Penn (lightweight fight) and John Hathaway. While some saw his unanimous decision win over Martin Kampmann as a gift, he also has name value and at 30 years old, White may be tempted to pull a surprise and give him a chance with an impressive win over Ellenberger.Josh KoscheckThe outsider of the group, Koscheck (17-5, 15-5 UFC) does have consecutive wins over Matt Hughes and Mike Pierce, but the latter wasn't convincing and the fight public isn't clamoring for another Koscheck title opportunity after his eye was busted up by GSP in December 2010. Stranger things have happened, but it would take a lot for Koscheck to be considered a viable opponent for Condit this summer. When it comes to getting a title shot, Ellenberger simply needs to follow the mantra of the late Al Davis: just win, baby.
