    Default Mijn Opdracht Voor Statistieken

    COURSE WORK GUIDELINES:

    (1) This coursework contains TWO questions and represents 25% of the total module mark.
    (2) The coursework will be done using Minitab.
    (3) Your coursework must have a typed cover page with the following information: Name, KU number, Module code, and the date the coursework is due.
    (4) Your work must be stapled together in the following order: cover page, the printout of the session window, the printout of the worksheet (the table), all graphs and analyses.
    (5) You must submit your own work.

    ASSESSMENT STRATEGY

The following Leaning Outcomes will be assessed in the coursework:

    1. summarise data and present it in a useful form.
    2. to use appropriate distributions in solving a given problem
    3. understand the nature of a hypothesis test
    4. construct confidence intervals and hypothesis tests for the mean of a single population
    5. use an appropriate statistical software package for basic statistical analysis and presentation of data

    Q1. (40%)

According to an article published in Reader’s Digest, 20% of people are left-handed. For 20 people selected at random, let X denote the number of people out of 20 who are left-handed.

    (a) Calculate the probability that exactly four of the twenty are left-handed.

    (b) Calculate the probability that less than 8 of the 20 are left-handed.

    (c) Find the number of people who are left-handed such that the probability of being less than or equal to this number is about 0.8.

    (d) Graph the probability distribution of X.

    (e) On your printout, with a pencil, circle the value that Minitab gave you for the probability that less than 8 of the 20 would be left-handed.

    (f) On your printout, with a pencil, put a star next to the value that Minitab gave you for the probability that exactly 4 of 20 would be left-handed.

    (g) On your printout, with a pencil, underline the value that Minitab gave you for the number of people who are left-handed such that the probability of being less than or equal to this number is about 0.8.

    Q2. (60%)

Suppose a reference librarian selected a random sample of 30 customers before starting a new information retrieval system. The retrieval times in minutes are given below.

    Information Retrieval
    10 15 15 10 20 15 10 20 30 15
    25 5 45 22 10 27 25 22 10 30
    15 5 8 15 5 36 23 17 15 10

    (a) Draw a histogram to summarise the retrieval times.

    (b) Test for normality.
Minitab has a normality test for determining whether a set of data is randomly selected from a Normal population. Steps are:

Stat > Basic Statistics > Normality Test
Variable: Select ‘column that stores the retrieval times
    Title: Enter a Title OK

Interpret the p-Value in the normality test.
    [Use Minitab HELP if necessary.]

    (c) Construct a 95% confident interval to estimate the mean retrieval time. Interpret the confidence interval.

    (d) Does the sample provide sufficient evidence to conclude that mean retrieval time differs from 20 minutes? Use α = 0.05.

    (e) Interpret the P-value of the test.

    (f) On your printout, with a pencil, circle the p-Value in the normality test that Minitab gave you (i.e. the P value in part (b)).

    (g) On your printout, with a pencil, circle the null and alternative hypotheses that Minitab gave you.

    (h) On your printout, with a pencil, put a star next to the p-value that Minitab gave you (i.e. the P Value in part (e)).

    (i) On your printout, with a pencil, underline the 95% confidence interval that Minitab gave you.

    (j) Type your answers and comments to parts (b) – (e) above on a separate sheet of paper.

Submit your coursework in the order listed under Course Work Guidelines above. Make sure that your submission includes ALL graphs created.

Ik heb vraag 1a al op papier beantwoord.

    Formulae: nCx * p^x * (1-p)^n-x
    n=20
    x=4
    p=0.2

    20C4 * 0.2^4 * 0.8^16 = 0.218

    Default mijn business opdracht

External influences affecting the firm and its activities

    Introduction
Your task is to research four articles from the national press that enable you to discuss examples of external influences that affect a specified firm and its activities.

The aim of this assignment is to assess your knowledge and understanding of the topic together with your ability to produce a written report and communicate relevant information and concepts.

    What you have to do
    • Produce a report 1250 words long.
The word count does not include citations, references, bibliography or appendices.
You will be penalised if you stray outside of +/- 10% of this word count.

    • The report should consist of a discussion of four news items. Each article must involve an environmental influence P.E. S. T. E or L. It must concern a specific firm or organisation. You should ensure that each news item illustrates a different firm/ organisation and a different environmental factor.

    • Articles 1to 3 must be analysed using business terminology and applying other areas of theory, where appropriate.

    • Article 4 is to be treated in more depth. Perhaps it is an issue which has been running for some time, in which you can look at the history of the issue. It would be appropriate to discuss changes in the organisation that have bearing on the issue for instance, its change in size through merger or organic growth, any legal cases against the firm, or its vulnerability to trade cycle effects.

    • These articles must come from daily newspapers ( The Times, The Financial Times, The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Independent). They can be hard copy or the electronic version. (note differences in referencing) The newspapers can be dated anytime between 1st May 2011 and 5th December 2011. The articles may be taken from any combination of newspapers. They can be from the same issue or completely different ones. They must be in the date range and newspapers stated above.

    • The purpose of the report is to ‘Outline how changing external influences affect organisations’. The articles should be selected on the basis that they identify a change in the environment and they discuss an organisation with respect to this change. The report must clearly explain the environmental change referred to and justify the actual or anticipated effect of this change upon the organisation.

    • Produce your report in a clear structured way. Follow this format:
    - A front cover to your report, with your name, Id number and the title ‘Examples of how changes in the environment affect organisations’
    - The second page lists the contents of the report. It should identify each article by reference to its title, newspaper used (with date), reporter (if given) and page number.
    - Each news item covered in the report should be identified with a clear heading.
    - On the last page of the report, list references for the citations used. References must be written using the Harvard Referencing.
    - The final section is the appendix in which the cuttings of the four news items are filed, in order and numbered.

What should you include in your report?
    a. Clearly summarise the information given in the article, from the perspective of
the firm. Consider how an external change has, or may, affect the organisation.
    b. Introduce any extra information that you think adds to the summary and analysis. Any information that is added, that has been taken from another source, must be clearly referenced. Please use the Harvard referencing
    c. Credit is given for relevant terminology and theory that you introduce to help your analysis.

What environmental influences (changing external influences) could you select?
Most articles in the national press refer to change and the majority of these events have implications for one or more businesses. Relevant news items, for the purpose of your assignment, are those that identify changes and identify a specific affected company. You may select stories regarding any environmental influence, for example: the effect of recession, a government announcement about some spending plans, changes in a competitor company, some economic factor such as unemployment, a changing social trend, something happening to a supplier.

The BU1010 text book is divided into ten topic areas, most of which cover relevant external influences. As a reference, or prompt for ideas, you should start with Topic 1: The Business Environment. On page 8 of the text book you will find reference to ‘general environmental factors’ and ‘immediate environmental factors’.

    MARKING CRITERIA
Your report will be marked with regard to the following:
    • Ability to produce a written report and to follow the assignment instructions.
    • Ability to communicate information and concepts in a clear way.
    • Ability to use appropriate terminology.
    • Awareness of relevant concepts in the discussion of external influences affecting a firm and its activities.
    • Knowledge with respect to the specific cases chosen and theory applied.
    • Understanding of the concepts displayed by applying them in a clear and relevant way. This high level marking criteria allows credit for evaluation and analysis.

You must submit a hard copy of your assignment as well as an electronic copy by 9.00 a.m. on Monday 12th December 2011.
