Strikeforce to Eliminate Heavyweight Division in 2012

The big men aren't long for Strikeforce, as the promotion will finish out its Heavyweight Grand Prix and soon afterward, eliminate the division in order to focus on its remaining weight classes.

The announcement was made by Strikeforce president Scott Coker during a Thursday conference call regarding the promotion's new extension with Showtime.

"What you'll see after the event with the tournament finals between Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier, you'll see one more fight where the winner will fight a top-rated heavyweight and then we're going to go back to focusing on our other weight classes," Coker said.

UFC president Dana White, who has a hand in running Strikeforce, cited the lack of depth for the reason from abandoning the class.

White didn't say what the future would hold for most of Strikeforce's signed heavyweights, but it is expected that most of them will be moved to the UFC and bolster depth there. On Thursday, MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani confirmed with White that recent Strikeforce heavyweight Fabricio Werdum has been signed into the UFC.

The move will be a bittersweet ending for the division that was once Strikeforce's deepest. At the start of 2011, the Heavyweight Grand Prix announcement brought more buzz to the promotion than anything they'd done with the exception of signing Fedor Emelianenko.

But the Grand Prix had its own problems. Emelianenko was eliminated in the first round, Alistair Overeem was eventually cut due to a dispute between Zuffa and his management team, and none of the hoped-for matchups materialized.

The final between Cormier and Barnett is likely to be contested by the end of the first quarter of next year, Coker said. And the end for the division won't come long afterward.

Strikeforce to Sally Forth, Plans 6-8 Events on Showtime in 2012


Strikeforce will continue to appear on Showtime in 2012, broadcasting between six and eight live events on the premium cable network.

UFC President Dana White, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker and Showtime Sports Executive Vice President Stephen Espinoza jointly announced on Thursday that the Zuffa-owned promotion has come to terms with the premium cable network for a new broadcast deal.

UFC parent company Zuffa purchased Strikeforce -- then the UFC's largest rival -- in March of this year. Since the acquisition, three of Strikeforce's five male divisional champions have made the move to the Octagon.

Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz and light heavyweight king Dan Henderson made their UFC returns this fall, earning exciting victories over B.J. Penn and Mauricio Rua in October and November, respectively. Strikeforce heavyweight titlist Alistair Overeem will debut in the Octagon on Dec. 30, as “The Demolition Man” locks up with former UFC champ Brock Lesnar in a No. 1 contender's bout at UFC 141.

Though White has stated in the past that he was eager to bring Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez to the UFC sooner rather than later, the UFC boss asserted on Thursday that Melendez would continue to fight in Strikeforce's hexagonal cage for the foreseeable future.

“Gilbert is pumped to stay in Strikeforce,” said White. “If he wins his next fight, he will continue to defend his belt in Strikeforce, and he is absolutely f---ing excited about it.”

Additionally, White and Coker confirmed that both the Strikeforce 135- and 145-pound women's divisions will be featured in 2012.

“The women's divisions [are] very popular, so we're going to keep both,” White said. “Cris 'Cyborg' [Santos] is a huge star. People are excited to see her fight.” The executives also announced that following the conclusion of Strikeforce's heavyweight grand prix, the promotion will do away with its heavyweight division. The tournament final between Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier is expected to go down in March. According to Coker, the winner of that fight will compete once more, and then the promotion will say goodbye to the big boys.

“After the tournament finals, the winner will fight a top-rated heavyweight, and then we'll do away with the division. Nothing is determined [regarding the opponent], but we'll have a dialogue with [Strikeforce matchmaker] Sean [Shelby] and the [officials] in Las Vegas, and we'll determine who that heavyweight will be.”

Coker went on to explain that Strikeforce will focus on building contenders and champions in the remaining divisions, working towards crowning new welterweight and light heavyweight titlists in 2012.

According to Espinoza, the Showtime broadcast team will generally stay intact, though event assignments are to be determined. Regarding the Strikeforce Challengers series, Espinoza explained that fights that would have taken place at those events will now likely take place on event undercards, which are slated to be broadcast on sister network Showtime Extreme.

“We've decided to consolidate the programming,” said Espinoza. “The preliminaries [will air] on [Showtime] Extreme immediately preceding the televised main [card]. Whether or not it will still be called 'Challengers,' I don't know. I think it makes more sense to make it one, huge, cohesive night of programming.”

Strikeforce kicks off the new year on Jan. 7 with a middleweight title fight from the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. In the titular main event, American Kickboxing Academy standout Luke Rockhold will defend his 185-pound belt against UFC veteran Keith Jardine. The event coincides with a free preview weekend on Showtime.

No worries, Dana en Josh hebben een tijdje terug vrede gesloten. Er circuleert dan ook een foto van die 2, breed lachend. Josh zal met name hebben ingezien dat bij de UFC de money is en hij beter iets kon inbinden.

Aan de andere kant is het wel weer vet als er elke week een event gehouden wordt. Er zijn zeker nadelen, maar een organisatie heeft ook zo z'n voordelen.

Je zei ook dat Overeem nooit in de UFC zou vechten. Barnett heeft zijn licentie in Texas en Ohio gekregen, waarom zouden andere staten hem dan in een keer geen licentie geven, volgens weigert alleen California hem een licentie te geven.

Showtime Exec Talks Scrapping 'Strikeforce Challengers,' Keeping 'M-1 Challenge'

The main difference with the old and new Strikeforce deal is the cancellation of the Challengers series in favor of quality fight cards from top to bottom, says Showtime Sports executive vice president Stephen Espinoza.

"Instead of having two stand alone events," Espinoza said Monday on The MMA Hour. "To make it into one huge night of MMA action."

Espinoza made the announcement last Thursday with UFC president Dana White and Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker that Strikeforce will continue producing events for Showtime.

Espinoza says it made more sense to focus on building both the main and preliminary portions of the Strikeforce cards. Previously, Strikeforce undercards were often non-televised/streamed and figured minimally in Strikeforce's long-term plans.

Starting with the Jan. 7 event headlined by Luke Rockhold vs. Keith Jardine, all the preliminary bouts will air on Showtime Extreme leading into the featured bouts on the primary Showtime channel.

Currently, the deal calls for Strikeforce to produce up to eight events in 2012. Showtime then has to make the decision to whether or not continue the agreement.

"We have an option to do additional events beyond that," Espinoza said.

In addition to working with the UFC, Showtime also carries M-1 Challenge events. Although UFC and M-1 are competitors, M-1 will likely continue producing events for Showtime as well.

"We are in discussions with M-1 to continue our relationship and we actually hope that we are going to be contiuning for at least another year," Espinoza said. "And things looks good that we are going to be able to do so."

sja strikeforce opkopen was puur omdat er een discussie ontstond dat strikeforce een sterkere zwaargewicht divisie dan ufc
ufc heeft de elite stempel en vooral het geld dus kopen ze de concurentie op .
en schakelt de zwaargewicht divisie ervan uit heel kinderachtig het gaat de vrouwenleage van mma worden met de afvallers en de nieuwkomers uit europa . iets wat dana white al heel lang roept de minor leages .

Dat gaat nog lastig worden, de meeste Strikeforce fighters staan nu ook onder contract bij Zuffa, zou me niet verbazen als er nog strenge bepalingen staan in die contracten dat ze niet zomaar kunnen overstappen bij Bellator. Alleen gecutte Strikeforce fighters kunnen naar Bellator.
