    Ryan Couture Beats Conor Heun

Randy Couture's kid offered up a performance that would make the old man proud on Saturday night, as Ryan Couture earned by far the biggest victory of his mixed martial arts career with a third-round technical knockout victory over Conor Heun at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey.

Couture controlled the pace of the fight for the first two rounds, and in the third he put on a clinic on the ground, transitioning into a dominant position and eventually getting on top of Heun in back mount and pounding away with punches, forcing the referee to stop the fight 2 minutes, 52 seconds into Round 3.

For Couture, who entered the fight with a 3-1 professional record, this is his first win over an experienced, well-rounded opponent and a big step forward in his career.

Couture appears to have improved as both a striker and a grappler: He was getting the better of the stand-up exchanges with Heun, and he also had some impressive submission attempts when the fight went to the ground.

It's not realistic to expect Couture to have a career like his dad, but he deserves credit for a very good showing against Heun.

Sarah Kaufman Beats Alexis Davis in Bloody Brawl

The main event of Saturday night's Strikeforce card is a women's title fight between Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey. And now we know who's going to fight the winner of that one: Sarah Kaufman, who turned in a great performance in beating Alexis Davis on the Tate vs. Rousey undercard.

Two judges scored the fight 29-28 for Kaufman, while one scored it a 29-29 draw.

Kaufman opened up a huge cut over Davis's eye in the first round, battered Davis through the second, and then survived the third despite Davis taking her down and controlling her on the ground. It was a tremendous fight, and one that reinforced Kaufman's status as one of the best female fighters in the world.

In fact, a strong case can be made that Kaufman -- not Rousey -- deserved to be fighting Tate in the main event. Rousey burst onto the scene with four impressive first-round submission victories, but Rousey doesn't have the complete body of work that Kaufman has.

"I'm going to come, I'm going to fight, I'm going to have that title. It's my title," Kaufman said afterward.

So while Kaufman wasn't happy about being passed over last time, she'll get her title shot next time. Kaufman is a great fighter.

    Jacare Souza Submits Bristol Marunde

Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza had no trouble beating Bristol Marunde at Saturday night's Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey event, dominating him for two rounds before submitting him in the third.

The fight was a mismatch from the moment it was booked: Marunde was a late replacement who just isn't on the same level as Jacare, one of the best Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioners in the world.

Marunde knew he had nothing for Jacare and mostly played defense before finally getting finished in the third round.

In the first round Jacare took Marunde's back and appeared to be working his way toward a submission, but when Jacare hit Marunde in the back of the head, the referee stood the fight up, giving Marunde new life. Jacare then dropped Marunde with a right hand and pounced on him on the ground, but Jacare wasn't able to submit Marunde on the ground, and Marunde survived the first.

In the second round Jacare opened up his striking, with punches, front kicks and even a spinning back kick, hurting Marunde in the process. But when he took Marunde down and took his back, Marunde surprisingly shook him off and got back to his feet. Jacare dominated the striking, but Marunde once again survived the round.

Jacare started the third round with a takedown, and now he was finally in the place he wanted to be: Jacare stayed on top of Marunde and worked to improve his position for a couple of minutes before finally sinking in an arm-triangle choke to end the fight.

    Lumumba Sayers Submits Scott Smith

Lumumba Sayers made short work of Scott Smith at Saturday night's Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey event, winning easily against a longtime MMA veteran who doesn't look like he has anything left anymore.

Sayers quickly took Smith down in the first round and took his back, and although Smith got back up the first time, it wasn't long before Sayers took him down again, sunk in a guillotine choke, and forced Smith to tap.

The fight lasted just 1 minute, 34 seconds.

Smith's tap came quickly, and he didn't look like he had much fight left in him. Smith has been in some tremendous battles in his MMA career, but he has now lost four in a row and doesn't appear to be in good shape anymore.

As for Sayers, he's now won two in a row with quick first-round stoppages. He's a good-looking fighter who still has some room to improve but has promise. Smith, on the other hand, is a past-his-prime fighter who may be done.

    Kazuo Misaki Beats Paul Daley

Kazuo Misaki turned in an impressive performance to defeat Paul Daley by split decision on Saturday night at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey, controlling the fight in the early going and holding on despite an ugly cut on his face in the third round.

The judges scored it 30-27 Misaki, 29-28 Daley and 29-28 Misaki.

Misaki, a Japanese veteran who was fighting in Strikeforce for just the second time, undoubtedly gained a lot of new fans on Saturday night for a very good showing in an exciting and fun fight.

Misaki was very effective in his striking in the first round, landing punches and then backing away before Daley could connect. Late in the first Daley -- who almost always prefers to stand and trade with his opponents -- took Misaki down, which was a strong indication of just how frustrated Daley was getting with Misaki's striking. Misaki definitely won the first.

The second round was closer, but Daley remained hesitant to really let his hands go because he was frustrated with what Misaki was doing. At his best, Daley throws his punches very hard. That's not what he was doing against Misaki.

A minute into the third round Daley executed a nice takedown and put Misaki on his back, then opened up a huge cut on Misaki's forehead with an elbow. The cut was big enough that the ref halted the fight to have the doctor examine it, but the fight was allowed to continue and Misaki showed a lot of heart, holding on and winning the fight.

    Josh Thomson Beats K.J. Noons

Josh Thomson easily beat K.J. Noons on Saturday night's Strikeforce card, dominating him for three rounds in a fight that showed Thomson had superior takedowns and wrestling, but didn't show much else: The fight wasn't particularly aesthetically pleasing, and it left the crowd booing.

All three judges scored it 29-28 for Thomson, who described his performance as "s--t" afterward.

Now Thomson may get a rubber match with Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez. Thomson beat Melendez in 2008, then lost to Melendez in 2009. Melendez has steadily improved and Thomson hasn't, however, and Melendez will be a heavy favorite heading into a rubber match.

Most of the first round of Thomson-Noons was a stalemate, with Thomson holding Noons down against the fence but not really advancing his position at all, and the fans began to boo the lack of action. Thomson deserved to win the round because he was the one in control, but it wasn't a particularly impressive round for either man.

Early in the second round Thomson threw a head kick and slipped onto his back, allowing Noons to get on top of him on the ground. But Thomson was able to reverse positions and wind up on top of Noons, once again controlling things from the top position. The fans were growing restless again, and the loudest cheer of the fight came when the referee stood the fight up because Thomson was on top and not doing much of anything. It wasn't long, however, before Thomson took Noons down and got on top of him again near the fence, and that's how the round ended, with the fans booing again.

In the third round it only took Thomson 30 seconds to use a trip takedown to get on top of Noons, and from the top position he sunk in an arm-triangle choke. Noons bucked Thomson off to escape that choke, but Thomson remained relentless on the top and wouldn't give up, and Thomson also got more active with ground and pound than he had been in the first two rounds. It was an easy round for Thomson and an easy win.

    Ronda Rousey Submits Miesha Tate

In a tremendous main event to Saturday night's Strikeforce card, a new women's champion has been crowned: Ronda Rousey has submitted Miesha Tate with a first-round arm bar.

Rousey is now 5-0, with all five wins by first-round arm bar. But this was a much tougher fight than her previous four.

None of the previous fights lasted even 50 seconds, but this one was a back-and-forth battle that lasted most of the first round. In the end, Tate didn't want to tap out, and she appeared to have an injured arm for her trouble.

"She was much more savvy on the ground than I anticipated," Rousey said of Tate. "She's good, she's legit, but I don't feel that bad about it."

It was a great fight: Tate charged in swinging but Rousey grabbed hold of her and did exactly what she wanted to do, using her world-class judo to throw Tate to the ground. Rousey then went for an arm bar, and it appeared that she would win this fight the way she had won all of her previous fights, with an arm bar in the first minute.

But Tate fought it off and not only escaped but wound up in an advantageous position, taking Rousey's back. Rousey fought that off and got back to her feet, and after a brief exchange of punches standing Rousey used a judo throw to get on top of Tate on the ground.

From there it was only a matter of time before Rousey got what she wanted, an opportunity to sink in an arm bar. Tate desperately wanted to survive and at first refused to tap, but eventually her arm bent in an ugly way, and Tate did tap.

She stayed on the ground for several minutes as Rousey celebrated in the cage.

UFC President Dana White Had No Input in Tate vs. Rousey

Dana White isn't in charge of Strikeforce after all.

Less than a month after telling MMAJunkie.com that he was going to be "very involved with Strikeforce" and was "happy about the Columbus show" the UFC president told MMAFighting.com on Saturday night that wasn't the case anymore.

According to White, after a series of talks with Showtime, things didn't work out between the premium cable network and himself. White said he will not be attending tonight's Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey event and had no input in the show. As of now, he will not have the kind of input in future Strikeforce shows that he wanted.
In response to a question on Twitter about the Strikeforce announcers, White made his feelings on the promotion clear.

"They (Showtime) run that sh** not me. I'm out," he wrote. "I'm 100% UFC."

The buzz surrounding Saturday night's Miesha Tate vs. Ronda Rousey title fight seemed to legitimately excite White about Strikeforce for the first time since Zuffa purchased Strikeforce last year and he had teased major changes beginning with this show, but after things apparently didn't work out with Showtime, the product looks the same on television and in the arena.

White wouldn't specify why he was unable to gain control over the promotion or what kind of changes he was hoping to make.
