Alistair Overeem Fails Drug Test Before UFC 146, Puts Title Showdown in Jeopardy

Alistair Overeem, the No. 1 contender in the UFC's heavyweight division, has failed a UFC 146 pre-fight drug test, according to Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer.
Overeem tested positive for an increased testosterone/epitestosterone or T/E ratio after last Tuesday's surprise drug test, which took place immediately following the UFC 146 press conference in Nevada. Overeem's sample far surpassed the 6-to-1 limit, testing above a 10-to-1 ratio.

The 31-year-old Overeem was scheduled to fight UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos on May 26, 2012 at the main event of UFC 146, however that booking is now in jeopardy.

"I am beyond pissed about this," UFC president Dana White said during a Wednesday conference call with Canadian media, according to a report from The Star Phoenix.

"How (expletive) stupid do you have to be? Seriously dumb. Anybody who's using (performance-enhancing drugs) right now is an absolute (expletive) moron," White added.

Last Tuesday's test functioned as one of the two random tests Overeem is required to undergo in accordance with NSAC demands after the Dutch heavyweight missed a commission requested pre-fight drug test in advance of his UFC 141 bout against Brock Lesnar.

Overeem will be required to appear before the NSAC if he wishes to seek licensure.

Dos Santos, Frank Mir, Cain Velasquez, Roy Nelson and Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva all tested negative for banned substances in advance of their UFC 146 main card bouts.

Frank Mir Would Be 'Excited' to Replace Alistair Overeem in UFC 146 Title Fight

Frank Mir knows a golden opportunity when he sees one. The former UFC heavyweight champion wasted no time volunteering to take Alistair Overeem’s spot in the UFC 146 main event bout with Junior dos Santos, according to a statement sent out over email by his management team on Wednesday afternoon.

Less than two hours after Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer announced that Overeem had tested positive for an increased testosterone/epitestosterone ratio after a recent press conference, Mir tossed his hat in the ring with an offer to fight current UFC heavyweight champ dos Santos if Overeem is indeed ruled ineligible for the May 26 fight in Las Vegas.

"I would be excited if given the opportunity to compete for the UFC's heavyweight title at UFC 146 if the reports released earlier today regarding Alistair Overeem failing his 'A' sample drug test are true," Mir is quoted as saying in the statement."I have been fortunate to be able to fight in the UFC for more than a decade, and it is a dream of mine to become the first three-time heavyweight champion in the UFC. Being able to fight Junior Dos Santos would put me one step closer to that dream."

It’s not the first time Mir has played the role of the eager opportunist in the UFC. Following his brutal submission victory over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 140 in Toronto last December, Mir seized on rumors that Overeem might be ruled ineligible for his UFC 141 bout with Brock Lesnar later that same month, telling media members gathered for the post-fight press conference that he "wouldn’t mind" stepping in against his old foe Lesnar on only three weeks’ notice.

"I only fought a three-minute fight, so I'm feeling pretty good," Mir said at the time. "My wife might not be happy about Christmas but, eh, she can deal with it."

As it turned out, Overeem was granted a conditional license by the NSAC that allowed him to stay in the fight with Lesnar, so Mir’s services weren’t required. This time, however, it could be a different story.

Overeem’s title fight against dos Santos could be in jeopardy after he tested above a 10-1 T/E ratio in his recent drug test -- far above the acceptable 6-1 limit.

Mir is currently slated to fight former UFC champion Cain Velasquez on the UFC 146 main card, which features an all-heavyweight lineup. Velasquez recently told MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani that it was his understanding that the winner of that fight would receive a title shot. If the UFC decides to take Mir up on his offer, who knows exactly how those plans could change.

Who Should Replace Alistair Overeem at UFC 146?

Alistair Overeem is not going to be fighting Junior dos Santos at UFC 146. You can pretty much bet the house on that, after Overeem's drug sample returned a testosterone-to epitestosterone ratio of more than 10:1, far above the Nevada state athletic commission's 6:1 cutoff. The next steps are testing the "B" sample, and a carbon isotope ratio test, which will determine if the testosterone in his body is naturally produced or synthetic.

The chances of either of those tests exonerating him are fairly miniscule, but that almost doesn't matter. Why? With seven weeks until the UFC 146 main event, the promotion can't wait around for the results. Tickets are already on sale, so they have to move on and salvage the event.

That means that someone else is about to receive a major opportunity. But who? Here's a few possible scenarios. Some are remote, so consider yourself warned.

    The Likely Pick: Frank Mir
Mir is nearly a lock to get the spot and face Dos Santos. He's coming off three straight wins, and the most recent one, a technical submission over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, is fresh enough in the minds of most to make him an interesting challenger. Not surprisingly, his camp started campaigning for the spot almost immediately. Within 90 minutes of NSAC executive director Keith Kizer revealing the test results, Mir's PR team had put out a statement to media saying he'd be "excited" to replace Overeem. As it stands, he's probably the best option.
    Odds: 2:1

    The Darkhorse: Fabricio Werdum
Right now, Werdum is scheduled to fight in June. If he could be ready in time, he might be the most interesting style matchup. For one, he's greatly improved his striking, so he's not going to get steamrolled if the fight stays standing. For another, his ground skills are not to be trifled with. Finally, the UFC is quite intent on growing the Brazilian market. Even though UFC 146 is taking place in Las Vegas, could you imagine the interest it will generate in Rio and beyond? It's certainly worth a thought.
    Odds: 4-1

    Unlikely: Cain Velasquez
A Velasquez-dos Santos fight would be a rematch of their UFC on FOX bout that was disastrous for the former champ. Unfortunately, he hasn't fought since, so he hasn't gained any momentum and there wasn't exactly an outcry for a rematch after he lost in just 64 seconds the first time around. Still, Velasquez has probably earned enough respect from fans over the years that he wouldn't be dismissed as a viable contender.
    Odds: 8-1
    The Longshots

    Mark Hunt
There are a couple things working in Hunt's favor here For one, he's already on the UFC 146 card. Of course, that doesn't distinguish him from Mir or Velasquez. But you know what does? His style. Hunt basically ensures that the fight will be a slugfest between the big boys, and that's never a bad thing when it comes to fan satisfaction. On the other hand, he's not nearly well known enough to headline a major event, and his 8-7 career record isn't exactly going to send people scrambling to plunk down $55 on pay-per-view. At least you can play up the "Rocky" angle with him.
    Odds: 50-1

    Josh Barnett or Daniel Cormier
Yes, I know these guys are scheduled to fight each other in Strikeforce on May 19, just one week before UFC 146. I know the fight has been delayed long enough. But injuries happen. What if one guy has been hiding an injury that we aren't aware of? Then what do you do with the other guy? Have him wait forever? More to the point, Dana White can do whatever he wants. If he decides Barnett or Cormier are coming over to fight dos Santos, that's that. Barnett would obviously be the more intriguing possibility because of his history with the UFC and Dana White, but Cormier's no slouch. Too bad there's no chance of it happening.
    Odds: 100-1

    Fedor Emelianenko
Speaking of impossible… Yes, we're talking Mega-Millions odds here, but think about the setting. Think about all of the back-and-forth sniping that's gone on between the UFC and Emelianenko's management group over the years. Think about all the tension that would be in the building. You're telling me that wouldn't be a wildly entertaining scene? You're telling me you wouldn't want to watch that madness? Obviously, White has said there's no chance of Emelianenko ever fighting in the UFC, but imagine if he actually changed his mind and offered him one final short-notice, take-it-or-leave-it opportunity?
    Odds: 100,000-1

Of this group, only the top three are likely to be considered, for obvious reasons. Mir, however, makes the most sense. He's already on the card, he's the first one to step up and volunteer for the spot, and unlike Velasquez, he wasn't on the wrong end of a disastrous knockout loss to dos Santos. Bottom line: Overeem out, Mir in.

Keith Kizer: NSAC Yet to Hear From Overeem's Camp About Testing B-Sample

Alistair Overeem can challenge the findings of his most recent drug test, which showed an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio, through a laboratory of his own choosing. Very simply, all he has to do is ask, and according to Nevada state athletic commission executive director Keith Kizer, he hasn't done that yet.

Though the findings are only hours old, every minute counts, as UFC 146 tickets are already on sale, offering the promotion little time to wait.
When an athlete provides a urine specimen, it is divided into two, the "A" and "B" samples. The A-sample is tested while the B-sample is stored under specific protocol for possible future use. This is one instance it would be used, and according to Kizer, if Overeem challenges the result, his B-sample results are likely to take 1-2 weeks.

Kizer told MMA Fighting on Wednesday night that NSAC hasn't yet heard from Overeem or anyone in his camp.

NSAC uses Quest Diagnostics for their drug testing program. Overeem could either elect to have the sample tested there or delivered to a lab of his choosing. Having it tested by Quest, which already has the sample, would be the fastest method, taking possibly 5-7 days. Transporting it to another lab would require extra steps that would increase the time necessary to complete the test and learn the result.

An Associated Press report run by multiple outlets claimed that Overeem could take a second urine test. That is incorrect, according to Kizer, who said that only Overeem's existing B-sample can exonerate him.

If Overeem challenges the findings, his B-sample's T/E ratio would be checked and a carbon isotope ratio test would be performed to determine whether the testosterone in his sample is naturally produced or synthetic. His A-sample showed a T/E ratio higher than 10:1, though an exact number wasn't available. The cutoff used by NSAC is 6:1.

Kizer, who has been NSAC's executive director for six years, and worked with them for years prior to that, said that during his lengthy tenure, he's only seen one B-sample contradict an A-sample. That came in 2007, when boxer Joey Gilbert tested positive for six different banned substances. When the B-sample was tested, one of the banned substances, methamphetamine, was undetected, but the other five were confirmed. He ultimately received a one-year suspension and a $10,000 fine.

The Overeem case is a bit different because he is currently unlicensed in Nevada. That means they can't punish him for the positive test with any kind of penalty, but they can deny him a fighter's license unless the B-sample exonerates him.

"Like with any drug test, if the B-sample comes back negative, then that trumps the A-sample, and he'd be eligible for licensure immediately," he said. "But if it comes back positive, or if he doesn't ask for it to be tested, that's something that can be used for grounds for denial. But that will be up to the commissioners."

Kizer said that the issue will remain in place until whatever point Overeem attempts to gain a license, even if it's years from now.

No retroactive penalty is likely. Though Overeem was given a conditional fighter's license to face Brock Lesnar late last year under terms that he would later provide two random tests, failing one of those random tests months later is not likely to change the fight result, Kizer said.

According to him, Overeem passed three urine tests and one blood test around the Lesnar fight, and his samples from that time have likely been destroyed since.

For now, everything is in a kind of purgatory. Overeem and his team haven't made a move. UFC president Dana White has said he does not know what he will do if Overeem can't fight, and scheduled opponent, champ Junior Dos Santos is in limbo. The timing issue might eventually force White to move on instead of waiting for the results, but the cloud of suspicion that once floated over Overeem's head has turned into a storm, and the UFC No. 1 heavyweight contender hasn't even pulled out his umbrella.

Due to an increase in funding, NSAC recently re-started out-of-competition testing. Kizer told MMA Fighting at the time of the UFC 146 tests that it was the first time they'd tested so many people on one card so far ahead of time. The irony of the result is that the one fighter who should have known it was coming was the one to fail the test.
Regardless of what Overeem's B-sample eventually shows, the random testing is expected to become a trend.

"This is the reason we wanted it and pushed for it," Kizer said. "We’ve always been a commission, even before my time, that has always tried to improve testing, within our powers to do so. We added steroid testing years ago, and we’re doing more and more testing than ever. When I took over, we tested 2-3 guys a card. Now sometimes we’re testing everyone on card. We’re doing in-training drug tests. We're doing more testing than ever."

Dana White: 'I am so f------ mad'

    6 hours ago | source: 5thround.com | 25631 Views | 168 Comments

Thirty minutes prior to the Nevada State Athletic Commission alerting the mixed martial arts world that Alistair Overeem had failed his pre-fight drug test, UFC President Dana White was notified of the disappointing news.
“I am beyond pissed about this,” White said. “I’m so f------ mad right now I can’t even begin …
“It’s beyond — what’s the word I’m looking for — it’s beyond belief. It’s beyond comprehension. You’re an absolute moron, a brain-dead absolute f------ dummy. It goes beyond a guy have any common sense whatsoever.”
“The worst part is that he sat in front of us and lied to us. How f------ stupid do you have to be? Seriously dumb. Anybody who’s using [performance-enhancing drugs] right now is an absolute f------ moron.”
    “I don’t have a Plan-B."
In regards to Overeem’s future inside the Octagon, White said he’ll wait for more details to emerge from the NSAC and to hear Overeem’s side of the story. However, he’s going to allow Fertitta to chat with Overeem since he’s far too heated at the moment.
“It doesn’t look good, does it?” White said. “It doesn’t look good.”
