Thiago Alves Out of UFC 149

Thiago Alves is the latest UFC fighter to be stung by the dreaded injury bug.

According to sources close to his camp, Alves has pulled out of his UFC 149 fight against Siyar Bahadurzada due to an undisclosed injury. MMAWeekly.com first reported the news on Friday. No replacement has been signed just yet.

Alves was looking to bounce back following his submission loss to Martin Kampmann at UFC on FX 2.Earlier in the day, news broke that Thiago Silva pulled out of UFC 149 due to a back injury.

UFC 149, headlined by Jose Aldo vs. Erik Koch for the UFC featherweight title, will take place July 21 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Back Injury Forces Thiago Silva Out of UFC 149 Fight Against Shogun Rua

Another back injury has forced Thiago Silva to pull out of his UFC 149 fight against Mauricio Rua, MMA Fighting has confirmed with Silva's manager Dan Lambert.

MMA Junkie first reported the news Friday afternoon.

According to Lambert, he doesn't believe Silva will need surgery to fix the lingering back issue that has plagued Silva's career over the last couple of years. Silva's bad back kept him out of action for an entire year in 2010 and it also bothered him enough going into his UFC 125 fight against Brandon Vera to force him to take prohibitive prescription steroids, which got him suspended for another year by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The Brazilian finally returned to action in April, only to lose a unanimous decision to Alexander Gustafsson in Sweden.

"Hopefully not long," Lambert said in response to how long Silva will be sidelined for, "but no way he could prepare for Shogun."

According to MMA Junkie, UFC president Dana White wants to replace Silva with Glover Teixeira, who defeated Kyle Kingsbury in 1:53 last week at UFC 146.

When contacted by MMAFighting.com, Teixeira's trainer John Hackleman would only say that "there is an interest on both sides."

And just in case you were wondering, Alexander Gustafsson's trainer Eric Del Fierro told MMAFighting.com that the UFC hasn't contacted his fighter yet about meeting Rua in a little less than two months.

UFC 149, headlined by Jose Aldo vs. Erik Koch for the UFC featherweight title, takes place July 21 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Bibiano Fernandes Signs With UFC, Makes Debut at UFC 149

The top international bantamweight outside of the UFC is joining its ranks.
Brazilian Bibiano Fernandes, who was the DREAM 135-pound champion, has signed with the UFC and will make his debut against Roland Delorme at UFC 149, the promotion announced on Monday.

Fernandes (11-3) had spent most of his career at featherweight, winning DREAM's title in that division as well before dropping down to bantamweight. He holds notable wins over Joachim Hansen, Joe Warren and Antonio Banuelos on his record.

In Delorme, he'll be facing an 8-1 fighter who has won both of his octagon outings, with wins over Josh Ferguson and Nick Denis.

UFC also confirmed that Chris Clements has stepped in to replace Thiago Alves in a matchup against Siyar Bahadurzada. Clements (11-4) is riding a five-fight win streak into the fight.

Finally, a welterweight match pitting James Head against Claude Patrick rounds out the additions to the card.

Yet to be determined, however, is a new opponent for Mauricio Rua, who was left without a foe after Thiago Silva dropped out with an injury.

UFC 149 is headlined by a featherweight title match with Jose Aldo attempting to defend his belt against Erik Koch. The event takes place at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary.

Chris Clements vs Siyar Bahadurzada set for UFC 149 with Thiago Alves hurt

by Jesse Holland on Jun 4, 2012 2:13 PM EDT in UFC News

This bout, believe it or not, started as Thiago Alves vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama.
Unfortunately the injury bug has mutated into a swarm and continues to gobble up any careless fighter in its path. After a "sexy" injury to Akiyama, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) tapped Siyar Bahadurzada to take his place.
Then "The Pitbull" had to be put down after getting hurt in practice.
Now Chris Clements steps up on short notice to try and cement his place among the baddest of the 170-pound bad, taking on "The Killer" at the UFC 149: "Aldo vs. Koch" pay-per-view (PPV) event from the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on July 21, 2012.
UFC.com announced the line-up change earlier today.

Clements (11-4) made his Octagon debut with a split decision win over Keith Wisniewski at the UFC 145 event earlier this year in Atlanta. His win over "The Polish Connection" pushed his current win streak to five. Meanwhile, Bahadurzada (21-4-1) also made a successful UFC debut by recently pasting Paulo Thiago at UFC on FUEL TV 2 in Sweden.
Who gets it done up north?
UFC 149 features a main event title fight between reigning featherweight champion Jose Aldo putting his 145-pound title on the line against the dangerous striking attack of division number one contender Erik Koch.
Other main card match-ups include Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira's return from injury to face off against Cheick Kongo while Michael Bisping tries to get back into the 185-pound title hunt against middleweight "Barbarian" Tim Boetsch.

Hector Lombard to Face Tim Boetsch at UFC 149

Hector Lombard didn't stay opponent-less for long. The newly signed UFC middleweight was knocked out of a UFC on FOX 4 main event slot after an injury struck his oppponent Brian Stann. Instead, he's been moved, with the UFC pairing him off with Tim Boetsch in a bout set for UFC 149 in Calgary.

Unfortunately, that bit of booking news is offset by yet another injury, as Boetsch was made available after his previously scheduled opponent Michael Bisping withdrew from their proposed bout with an undisclosed injury.

With the change, Lombard's debut will actually be moved up two weeks, as UFC 149 takes place on July 21, while his originally scheduled date at UFC on FOX 4 is set for August 4.

The Cuban is 31-2 with 1 no contest in his career, and hasn't lost in his last 25 fights, a stretch that dates back to November 2006.

Boetsch has gone unbeaten since moving to middleweight, going 3-0 during that time with wins over Kendall Grove, Nick Ring, and most recently, Yushin Okami. He is 15-4 overall.

The UFC did not offer any specifics on the injury to Bisping, or any timeline on when he might return.

Jose Aldo Injured, Urijah Faber vs. Renan Barao Shifted to Headline UFC 149

The summer of injuries lives on, and Jose Aldo has now joined its growing list of causalities.

Aldo, the reigning UFC featherweight champion, was removed from the main event of UFC 149 after suffering an undisclosed injury, promotion officials announced on Saturday.

With Aldo sidelined, UFC 148's interim bantamweight title fight between Urijah Faber and Renan Barao will now headline UFC 149.

Officials have yet to comment if Erik Koch, Aldo's opponent, will remain on the card, only stating that the title tilt is "postponed."

UFC 149 takes place July 21, 2012 at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Canana. Already, the main card has been eviscerated by injuries, losing Michael Bisping, Mauricio Rua vs. Thiago Silva, and Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Thiago Alves in recent weeks.

With Faber and Barao off UFC 148, promotion officials have not revealed a new co-main event. Barao, of course, is an injury replacement for UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz, who suffered an ACL injury while coaching opposite Faber on The Ultimate Fighter Live.

Bibiano Fernandes Out of UFC 149 Because He Never Signed Contract

    Another one bites the dust.

A week after announcing that former DREAM champion Bibiano Fernandes signed with the UFC, the organization broke the news that the Brazilian will no longer be competing at UFC 149. The reason? Well, according to Fernandes, he never signed a UFC contract to begin with.
"I would like to make it clear that I am not a UFC athlete as I did not sign any contract with the UFC organization," he wrote on his Facebook page. "Negotiations between the UFC and myself did take place, however, we could not resolve the issues on the table and as a result we did not come to an agreement."

According to sources close to Fernandes, he has received a more lucrative offer from ONE FC, but he has yet to sign that contract as well.

Fernandes (11-3) was scheduled to meet Roland Delorme (8-1) in Calgardy, Alberta, Canada. No word just yet on who Delorme will now face.

This marks another blow to what was once a solid, sold-out card. The following is a list of all the main card fighters who have pulled out of UFC 149 for one reason or another: Jose Aldo, Erik Koch, Thiago Alves, Yoshihiro Akiyama, Shogun Rua, Thiago Silva, Michael Bisping. Fernandes wasn't scheduled to fight on the main card.

As a result, the new pay-per-view lineup currently looks like this:

Urijah Faber vs. Renan Barao -- interim bantamweight title
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cheick Kongo
    Tim Boetsch vs. Hector Lombard
    Siyar Bahadurzada vs. Chris Clements
Court McGee vs. Nick Ring (not officially announced as a PPV fight)

Shawn Jordan Replaces Injured Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Against Cheick Kongo at UFC 149

The UFC injury bug continues to spoil the promotion's debut in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

The organization confirmed on Saturday that Shawn Jordan will replace the injured Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira against Cheick Kongo next month at UFC 149. Sherdog.com first reported the news.

Nogueira is just the latest big-name fighter to pull out of UFC 149. The others are: Jose Aldo, Shogun Rua, Thiago Alves, Thiago Silva, Michael Bisping, Yoshihiro Akiyama, Erik Koch and Bibiano Fernandes.

Jordan (13-3) won his Octagon debut in March when he defeated Oli Thompson via second-round TKO. The former Strikeforce and Bellator fighter also holds a win over Lavar Johnson.

Kongo (17-7) will look took bounce back from his first-round TKO loss to Mark Hunt at UFC 144 in February. The loss snapped the Frenchman's four-fight unbeaten streak.

"Big Nog" hasn't fought since Frank Mir broke his arm at UFC 140 last December.

UFC 149, now headlined by Urijah Faber vs. Renan Barao for the interim bantamweight title, will take July 21 on Scotiabank Place in Calgary.
