Glover Teixeira Debuts With Lopsided Win Over Kyle Kingsbury

After years of waiting to make his UFC debut, things went about as well as Glover Teixeira might have dreamed.

The Brazilian bomber roughed up Kyle Kingsbury in the early going of their UFC 146 prelim and then transitioned to a fight-ending arm triangle choke in just 1:53 of the first round.

Teixeira, a longtime training partner of Chuck Liddell, has long been considered one of the best light-heavyweights outside of the UFC.

He came into the fight riding a 15-fight win streak, and he looked every bit of the wrecking machine as his reputation indicated.

The 32-year-old put the rest of the division on notice, saying he'd earned his green card and wasn't going anywhere. His arrival was a long time coming. Way back in 2008, he reportedly signed with the organization before visa issues torpedoed that opportunity.

He improved to 18-2 with the win.

Kingsbury fell to 11-4 with 1 no contest after dropping his second straight in the octagon.

Dan Hardy Snaps Losing Streak, Knocks Out Duane Ludwig

It's been a long time since Dan Hardy earned the right to raise his arms and celebrate in the middle of the octagon. The drought is over.

Hardy out-struck the seasoned striker Duane "Bang" Ludwig, knocking him out in the first round of their UFC 146 preliminary bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Hardy dropped him Ludwig with his signature left hook and then began to prematurely celebrate before realizing the fight wasn't over. He immediately swarmed and landed a few ground strikes before referee Josh Rosenthal stepped in to call a halt to the action at 3:51.

Hardy hadn't won a fight since November 2009, when he defeated Mike Swick to become the welterweight division's No. 1 contender. He'd lost four in a row since then.

"It's good to be back, it's really good to be back," Hardy said afterward. "The only one thing that's bittersweet, Duane's always been kind of a hero for me ... Seeing him hit the canvas it was good for me, but I love him so much."

Hardy is now 24-10 with 1 no contest in his career.

Ludwig had his moments in the earliest part of the fight, scoring with counters and a sharp right hand. But Hardy turned the tide quickly, scoring with a hard left hook out of a clinch, and it wasn't long afterward when he got the finish.

Ludwig fell to 29-13, losing for the second straight time.

After Saying If He Loses He'll Quit, Mayhem Miller Defeated by CB Dollaway

Prior to his UFC 146 fight, Jason "Mayhem" Miller said if he lost, he would retire. It looks like he has a decision to make.
While Miller had his moments in the standup, hurting C.B. Dollaway on more than one occasion, Dollaway used his wrestling skill to control Miller en route to a 29-28, 30-26, 29-28 unanimous decision win at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

There may have been a complicating factor involved, however, as Miller seemed to be fighting with an injured knee.
His left knee was taped and covered with a knee brace, and it buckled several times throughout the fight.

Miller definitely had the better individual moments in the early part of the bout. In the first, Miller hurt Dollaway with a straight right and then looked for a guillotine. He looked close to securing it, but Dollaway pulled out. In the second, he landed an overhand right that sent Dollaway reeling backwards.

But in the seconds after most of Miller's good moments, Dollaway shot successful takedowns and controlled the action. By the third though, Dollaway was in complete control, securing a back mount and throwing uninterrupted strikes from the top. Miller withstood the barrage, but couldn't do enough to earn the decision.

Now we'll have to wait and see if Miller (23-9, 1 no contest) holds to his pre-fight promise.

It was about two months ago on an episode of MMA Uncensored when he made the bold statement.

"If I lose to him, I’m quitting. I quit. I don’t deserve to be in there," he said then.

Dollaway improved his record to 12-4 with the victory.

Jamie Varner Upsets Unbeaten Edson Barboza

Scratch Edson Barboza from the ranks of the unbeaten.
The vaunted Brazilian lightweight striker was upset at UFC 146, knocked out by the returning Jamie Varner in just 3:23 of the first round.

Barboza got off to a strong start, looking to chop Varner down with leg kicks, but the fight shifted when Varner caught a kick and took him down, scoring ground strikes.

Barboza got back to his feet but Varner staggered him with a straight right hand. He dropped him with another right and dropped a series of hammerfists over his fallen opponent until ref Steve Mazzagatti had seen enough.

The former WEC champion immediately ran to a camera and mouthed the words, "I'm back."

"Once you hit rock bottom you appreciate the places you've been, so I just want to thank the UFC for another chance," he said.
Varner, who had taken the fight on short notice, improved to 19-6-1 with 2 no contests.

Barboza had come into the fight as more than a 5-to-1 favorite. He was 10-0 coming into the fight and had won three straight Fight of the Night awards. On this night, he might be on the wrong end of another award, Knockout of the Night, as Varner returned with a flourish.

It was his first time in a UFC cage since March 2007, a fight that also ended in a first-round stoppage victory.

Stefan Struve Taps Out Lavar Johnson In 65 Seconds

New opponent, no problem for Stefan Struve.

The Dutch fighter outclassed Lavar Johnson on the mat, catching him in an arm bar in gaining a first-round submission at UFC 146. The victory took just 65 seconds for Struve.

Johnson came out quickly with a barrage of power strikes that sent Struve backpedaling against the fence, but Struve covered up, pulled guard and quickly pivoted for the fight-ending arm bar.

"I felt his control and I knew I could get the arm bar if I jumped guard," he said.

It was Johnson's second fight in three weeks, having knocked out Pat Barry at May 5's UFC on FOX 3 event. He took the fight on short notice, replacing Mark Hunt.

Struve said he knew his best chance to win was to get the fight to the ground, and he was proven right.

"He's a heavy hitter so why give him any chance at all to win the fight," Struve said of his strategy.

It was Struve's third straight win, improving to 24-5.

    Johnson fell to 17-6.

Stipe Miocic Stops Shane del Rosario

In the UFC 146 battle of unbeatens, Stipe Miocic came out unscathed.
Miocic used his wrestling to take Shane del Rosario down early in the second round and overwhelm him, eventually stopping him with a series of elbows that slashed his forehead open and bounced his head off the canvas repeatedly.

    The finish came at 3:14.

The first round was fairly even, with del Rosario scoring with kicks to the legs and body while Miocic looked to head-hunt. The two kept a furious pace for the opening five minutes.

The second though, was completely different, as Miocic took it to the mat early and del Rosario could never find a way back to his feet. Miocic bloodied him early on in the sequence with an elbow, and his short strikes got harder and harder until the ref had seen enough.

It was the second straight knockout loss for Miocic, who is now 9-0.

Del Rosario had been fighting for the first time since February 2011. After that, he had been involved as a car accident that put him on the shelf with career-threatening injuries.

    Del Rosario is now 11-1.

    Roy Nelson KO's Dave Herman

In a one-punch knockout, Roy Nelson folded up Dave Herman at UFC 146.
The fight took only 51 seconds from start to finish.

After a quick feeling-out process, Nelson uncorked an overhand right that landed perfectly on Herman's chin. Herman went down in a heap. Nelson followed up with one punch to his fallen opponent, but ref Steve Mazzagatti was already stepping in to call a finish to the fight.

Herman protested the stoppage, but it was clear from his body going limp as he went down that he was out at least momentarily.

The knockout was reminiscent of Nelson's KO of Stefan Struve in March 2010. It was his second win in three fights as he improved to 17-7.

Herman, who took the fight on short notice, replacing Gabriel Gonzaga, fell to 21-4. After beating John Olav Einemo in his first UFC fight, he's lost two straight in the octagon.

Cain Velasquez Brutalizes Antonio Silva in First-Round TKO

If there were any questions about how Cain Velasquez would return from his first professional defeat, they were put to rest with an exclamation point.

The former UFC heavyweight champion put Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva down early and brutalized him for the entirety of the fight until drawing a referee stoppage at UFC 146.

The first-round TKO win took just 3:36.

"I feel good, a step in the right direction," Velasquez said afterward. "Daniel Cormier my teammate, fought Silva, and he told me some things that helped tonight."

Silva was never in the fight. Velasquez took him down in the fight's opening seconds and opened a cut on his head with an elbow soon after. Velasquez worked the cut with subsequent elbows, and the wound spurted blood down SIlva's face and soon darkened the mat around them. It ended up being one of the bloodiest fights in recent UFC history.

Ref Josh Rosnethal at one point stopped the action to have it checked, but the cageside doctor let the fight continue.

Restarted in the same position, it was more of the same for Velasquez, who finally finished Silva after a hail of left hands from the top.

It was just the kind of performance Velasquez needed in his first fight since losing the title to Junior dos Santos.

"Just to know what you've done in the past, get over that and a step in the right direction, get better," he said.

It was the 10th pro win for Velasquez to go with one defeat.

In losing his UFC debut, Silva dropped to 16-4.

Junior dos Santos TKO's Frank Mir to Retain Heavyweight Title

Junior dos Santos looks more and more invincible every time out.
The UFC heavyweight champion made his first successful title defense, earning a second-round TKO win over former champ Frank Mir at UFC 146.

dos Santos controlled the fight from start to finish. Mir tried a takedown early in the first but couldn't secure it, and as it turned out, that was his best opportunity to do anything as dos Santos soon took over with his pinpoint striking.

The end came after dos Santos clipped Mir with a straight right. Mir crashed to the mat and looked out, but ref Herb Dean gave him a chance to defend. It was clear though that he was disoriented and it only took dos Santos one more punch to cause Dean to call a halt to the action.

"I'm feeling awesome, man," dos Santos said afterward. "It's amazing. Not bad for a nice guy, huh?"

Before the fight, it was believed that Mir's only chance to win was to take the fight to the mat. Afterward, he basically admitted that was the case but was stifled in his attempt to change the fight's location.

"I didn't want a boxing match with him, he just forced me into it," he said. "I couldn't get him down."

The first was almost entirely standup. Mir failed on an early takedown and mostly held his own until the last minute of the round until dos Santos clipped him with a right to the temple. Mir was clearly hurt and dos Santos swarmed with a flurry. Mir tried to cover up but dos Santos' strikes made it through and had him wobbled but time ran out before he could finish.
"This guy could take a punch," dos Santos said. "My hand is hurt."

Mir though was badly hurt as well. In between rounds, a Nevada state athletic commission official asked Mir where he was, and while he gave the right date, he said he was at the Mandalay Bay, while the fight was actually at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
In winning, dos Santos gained a measure of revenge for his mentor, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, but he said it was of no concern to him.

"Nogueira is a tremendous fighter," he said. "Frank Mir is a really good fighter, too. That fight was between them. i don't care about that. I respect so much my mentor but I came to defend my belt and I did it."

dos Santos is now 15-1 overall and unbeaten in his nine UFC bouts.

    Mir is now 16-6.

"He's the champ," Mir said. "He's fast. I couldn't get out of the way. He hit me hard, too many of them and they were all hard shots. They built up and I couldn't do anything about it."

UFC 146 Bonuses: Dan Hardy, Roy Nelson Earn Knockouts of the Night

Dan Hardy couldn't have asked for a better night.
On a card packed with heavyweight fireworks, the diminutive Englishman managed to pocket an extra $70,000 for ‘Knockout of the Night' and, more importantly, save his job after dropping Duane Ludwig with a left hook late in the opening frame at UFC 146. The victory was Hardy's first since 2009, and it showed.

"It's good to be back," an emotional Hardy said afterward. "It's really good to be back."

Though Hardy wasn't the only one leaving the MGM Grand Garden Arena with a fatter wallet. After a night featuring nine finishes, UFC President Dana White announced the promotion would hand out two ‘Knockout of the Night' and two ‘Submission of the Night' bonuses, with Roy Nelson being the recipient of the second knockout bonus.

Nelson needed just 51 seconds to flatten Dave Herman with a heavy overhand right, locking in the fastest finish on the card.
"Clearly my hands have dynamite in them or small rock or whatever," Nelson quipped.

Meanwhile, English lightweight Paul Sass and Dutch heavyweight Stefan Struve earned ‘Submission of Night' honors for their efforts. Sass maintained his undefeated record by submitting Jacob Volkmann early in the first round, while Struve made quick work of Lavar Johnson, tapping the American via a textbook armbar in 65 seconds.

‘Fight of the Night' was not awarded to any of the card's participants.

was ik ed enige die vond dat Frank Mir een beetje zat te clownen? Hij leek af en toe gewoon te spelen alsof die 'rocked' was.
