UFC 146 Medical Suspensions: Cain Velasquez, 'Bigfoot' Silva Potentially Out for Six Months

Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and five others received potential six-month medical suspensions in the aftermath of UFC 146, the Nevada State Athletic commission confirmed on Tuesday.
The suspension to Velasquez, who may have injured his left hand midway through his co-main event win over Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, is pending X-rays and physician clearance. If his hand is broken, Velasquez could be sidelined as long as November 20.

Likewise, Silva will require X-rays on his nose, and depending on the results, could face a suspension stretching into late November.

Undercard fighters Jamie Varner, Jason "Mayhem" Miller, C.B. Dollaway and Jacob Volkmann also received potential six-month suspensions pending doctor's clearance. Miller requires clearance on both his right thumb and left knee, lending credence to suspicions that he fought Dollaway with an injured knee.

Eleven additional fighters received various minimal suspensions, chief among them being Frank Mir. Following his TKO loss to UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos, Mir will be sidelined until July 23, with no contact allowed until July 11.
The official UFC 146 medical suspension report can be read below:

Cain Velasquez: Requires X-ray of left hand. Suspended until November 20 if broken, unless medically cleared sooner. Minimum suspension until June 26, with no contact until June 17.

Antonio Silva: Requires X-ray of nose. Suspended until November 20 if broken, unless medically cleared sooner. Minimum suspension until July 23, with no contact until July 11.

Jason Miller: Requires medical clearance of right thumb and left knee, or suspended until November 20. Minimum suspension until July 11, with no contact until June 26.

C.B. Dollaway: Requires X-ray of left thumb. Suspended until November 20 if broken, unless medically cleared sooner. Minimum suspension until June 26, with no contact until June 17.

Jamie Varner: Requires X-ray of right hand. Suspended until November 20 if broken, unless medically cleared sooner. Minimum suspension until June 26, with no contact until June 17.

Jacob Volkmann: Requires medical clearance of left elbow, right thumb and left knee, or suspended until November 20.

Frank Mir: Suspended until July 23, with no contact until July 11.

Dave Herman: Suspended until July 23, with no contact until July 11.

Lavar Johnson: Requires medical evaluation of left elbow. Minimum suspension until July 11, with no contact until June 26.

Edson Barboza: Suspended until July 11, with no contact until June 26.

Stipe Miocic: Suspended until June 26, with no contact until June 17.

    Waaom?

UFC 146 Draws Official Gate of Over $3.4 Million, 11,428 Paid Attendance

The UFC heavyweight championship is still big business. The UFC 146 headlining title match pitting champ Junior dos Santos against challenger Frank Mir drew a gate of $3,428,775 to the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, the Nevada state athletic commission reported on Wednesday.

That total came on the strength of 11,428 tickets sold, for an average price of just over $300 per seat.

The event fell short of a sellout, however.

Total attendance was 14,674, with 3,246 tickets given away. Another 276 went unsold.

Still, the $3.2 million-plus gate was a tick higher than even last December's UFC 141, which was headlined by Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem. That event drew $3.1 million. In fact, UFC 146 was the highest-grossing UFC heavyweight championship match since Lesnar defended the belt at UFC 100, an event that featured two title bouts and drew over $5.1 million at the box office.

dos Santos successfully defended his belt for the first time in the UFC 146 main event, matching his pre-fight prediction by stopping Mir in a second-TKO.
