B.J. Penn, Rory MacDonald Discussing Fighting at UFC on FOX 5 in December

By now you know that Rory MacDonald vs. B.J. Penn won't take place at UFC 152, so the question remains: will the welterweights still face off later this year, and if so, when?

According to MacDonald's manager Lex McMahon, talks are underway of having MacDonald vs. Penn headline UFC on FOX 5 on Dec. 8.
"I've been in communication with B.J.'s camp and UFC," McMahon said, "the idea of fighting on the FOX card has been part of these discussions. Our position is that Rory will fight B.J. as soon as he is healed and had a reasonable period to train.

"The possibility of headlining the FOX card in December is attractive as it provides a great platform to showcase the return of B.J. Penn, one of our sport's icons, as well as to introduce the mainstream fans to one of brightest young stars in the form of Rory. At this juncture nothing has been agreed upon, but needless to say Rory and his team would welcome the opportunity to fight B.J. Penn on FOX as the main event."

Nate Quarry mentioned the possibility of the 170-pound fight taking place at UFC on FOX 5 on Thursday's episode of "MMA Uncensored Live."

Over the past week, Penn suggested having the fight on Oct. 13 in Rio de Janeiro, while MacDonald asked for Nov. 17 in Montreal, however, McMahon said he was told those cards are full (as far as the top fights are concerned), which would leave either the FOX card or UFC 155 on Dec. 29 as the only options to host the fight this year.

A venue for UFC on FOX 5 has yet to be officially announced by the promotion. MacDonald pulled out of the fight last week due to a cut sustained in training.

Default UFC On FOX 5: Henderson vs Diaz/Shogun vs Gustaffson\Penn vs MacDanold

Three Big Fights For UFC On Fox 5: Ben Henderson Vs Nate Diaz, Rory MacDonald Vs B.J. Penn, And Shogun Vs Gustafsson

by Chris Hall on Aug 15, 2012 2:58 AM EDT in UFC News

In the wake of their network premier event, the UFC has taken a lot of criticism for the quality and relevancy of their events on Fox. The promotion opened up with a huge debut featuring a single bout between Junior Dos Santos and Cain Velasquez for theHeavyweight title. Since then, the free fight cards have shown decreasingly relevant headliners and supporters. It would seem the UFC has responded to this criticism.
MMA Junkie reports that the UFC has added three big fights to December's UFC On Fox 5 card:
Ben Henderson (17-2) Vs. Nate Diaz (16-7)
    Rory MacDonald (13-2) Vs. B.J. Penn (16-8-2)
Mauricio Rua (21-6) Vs. Alexander Gustafsson (14-1)
Without a doubt this would be the biggest event on the Fox network since the Heavyweight title bout. Ben Henderson just defended his title in a somewhat controversial rematch against Frankie Edgar at UFC 150. Diaz poses huge problems for him, however, with a relentless striking style and extremely threatening submission game. Rory MacDonald and B.J. Penn have combined to add extra drama to their bout by submitting to VADA sponsored drug testing. Even without the supplementary testing Penn will be the most difficult test the young Rory Macdonald has faced so far. To cap it off, the potential contenders match between Rua and Gustafsson is a huge announcement. Rua displayed his immense skill with a 4th round KO of Brandon Vera on UFC On Fox 4 in an effort to win his way back to a title shot. Rising prospect Gustafsson stands in his path, who has only ever faltered to dominant wrestler Phil Davis.
All three of these are potentially exciting and very relevant fights to put on a free card. UFC On Fox 5 does not yet have an official venue or location, but it's expected to take place on December 8th.

UFC on FOX 5 to Be Held in Seattle

UFC on FOX 5 finally has a home.

The event, which will be headlined by Benson Henderson vs. Nathan Diaz for the UFC lightweight title, will take place at KeyArena in Seattle on Dec. 8. The news was first reported on Tuesday's episode of "UFC Tonight" on FUEL TV.

This will mark just the second UFC card hosted by "The Emerald City." The first, UFN 24: Nogueira vs. Davis, took place in March 2011.

This card will serve as another homecoming of sorts for Henderson, who grew up in Federal Way, WA, located just 25 miles away from KeyArena. Henderson's last fight against Frankie Edgar at UFC 150 took place in the state of Colorado, which is where he was born before moving to Federal Way.

Also scheduled for the main card is B.J. Penn vs. Rory MacDonald and Shogun Rua vs. Alexander Gustafsson. More UFC on FOX 5 bouts are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Michael Chiesa vs. Rafaello Oliveira Highlights Trio of UFC on FOX 5 Announcements

A trio of new fights have been added to UFC on FOX 5.

Surprise TUF: Live winner Michael Chiesa leads the announcements, as "Maverick" will meet Rafaello Oliveira in a lightweight bout on the night's undercard. Featherweights Dennis Siver vs. Eddie Yagin and bantamweights Scott Jorgensen vs. John Albert are also official.

UFC on FOX 5 takes place December 8 at the KeyArena in Seattle, WA. A lightweight championship clash pitting Benson Henderson against Nate Diaz headlines the star-studded main card.

The undefeated Chiesa (8-0) ran to the TUF: Live title on a string of upset victories, capping the season with a first-round submission over Al Iaquinta. He'll now face Oliveira (15-5), who carries a 1-2 record over his last three fights, including a recent decision victory over Yoislandy Izquierdo.

Siver (20-8) and Yagin (16-5-1) were the last displaced members of UFC 151, and they'll still meet, just three months later than expected. Both men are coming off wins, as Siver topped Diego Nunes in his featherweight debut and Yagin upset Mark Hominick at UFC 145.

Lastly, the stakes are markedly higher for both Jorgensen (13-6) and Albert (7-3). Each fighter will look to stop a two-fight losing streak, though Jorgensen, a former WEC title contender, has fallen to much higher competition in losses to Eddie Wineland and Renan Barao.

Yves Edwards to face John Cholish at UFC on FOX 5

Yves Edwards has a new fight. After his scheduled bout at UFC on FX 5 with Jeremy Stephens fell out, UFC President Dana White promised to get the ATT-trained lightweight a new fight. Edwards will now face John Cholish at UFC on FOX 5 on Dec. 8th.

MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani confirmed the news Wednesday with event sources.

The Bahamian fighter was scheduled to face Stephens on the preliminary portion of last Friday's card, but Stephens was arrested the morning of the fight on an outstanding warrant for a 2011 assault committed in Iowa. Attempts by the UFC to free Stephens on Friday to give him enough time to compete were unsuccessful.

Edwards was paid his show money by the UFC and White told the media in attendance Edwards would be given a fight as soon as possible.

Edwards, 36, last fought in December of 2011 where he dropped a unanimous decision to season 13 winner of 'The Ultimate Fighter' Tony Ferguson.

Cholish, 28, most recently competed at UFC on FOX 3 in May of this year where he suffered his first UFC loss at the hands of Danny Castillo. Castillo won the bout via unanimous decision.

Yves Edwards vs. Jeremy Stephens rebooked for UFC on FOX 5

After their initial meeting was infamously canceled last minute, lightweights Yves Edwards (41-18-1 MMA, 9-6 UFC) and Jeremy Stephens (20-8 MMA, 7-6 UFC) will give it another go at UFC on FOX 5.

As MMAjunkie.com first reported earlier today, Edwards' original opponent, John Cholish (8-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC), recently scratched due to a groin injury.

In his place steps Stephens, whose incarceration canceled their planned bout this past month at UFC on FX 5.

Edwards today tweeted news of the change.

UFC on FOX 5 takes place at Seattle's KeyArena. The main card airs on FOX following prelims on FX and Facebook, and Edwards vs. Edwards is expected to air on the night's FX broadcast.

Stephens' arrest (due to an old warrant) and UFC President Dana White's inability to spring him from a Minneapolis jail on fight day resulted in the bout's late cancellation. Edwards was paid his show money and rebooked to fight Cholish. However, with Stephens now free, he's stepped in as Cholish's replacement to preserve the original booking.

Edwards was on a 4-1 run before a December loss to "The Ultimate Fighter 14" champion Tony Ferguson, which is the well-rounded fighter's most recent bout. The streak included UFC wins over the likes of Rafaello Oliveira (TKO), Cody McKenzie (submission) and John Gunderson (decision).

Stephens most recently came to Edwards' aid when the longtime vet withdrew from UFC on FUEL TV 3, and he posted a losing effort against Donald Cerrone. The setback was the second straight for "Lil Heathen," who previously lost a decision to former WEC champ Anthony Pettis. The hard-hitting veteran's notable victories include knockouts of Rafael dos Anjos and Marcus Davis, as well as a decision victory over Sam Stout.

The full UFC on FOX 5 card now includes:

MAIN CARD (FOX, 8 p.m. ET)
Benson Henderson vs. Nate Diaz (for lightweight title)
Alexander Gustafsson vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua
    Rory MacDonald vs. B.J. Penn
    Matt Brown vs. Mike Swick

    PRELIMINARY CARD
    Lavar Johnson vs. Brendan Schaub
    Mike Chiesa vs. Marcus LeVesseur
    Nam Phan vs. Dennis Siver
    Raphael Assuncao vs. Mike Easton
    Ramsey Nijem vs. Joe Proctor
    Yves Edwards vs. Jeremy Stephens
    Daron Cruickshank vs. Henry Martinez
    John Albert vs. Scott Jorgensen
    Tim Means vs. Abel Trujillo

Lavar Johnson injury also forces Brendan Schaub off UFC on FOX 5 card

Another day, another injury affects an upcoming UFC card.

UFC president Dana White announced Thursday night that Lavar Johnson has pulled out of next week's UFC on FOX 5 fight against Brendan Schaub due to a pulled groin.

White initially told MMAFighting.com that he wasn't sure if Schaub would remain on the Dec. 8 card, however, Schaub's manager Lex McMahon later told MMAFighting.com that the heavyweight will not compete next Saturday night due to the late-notice injury.

"Brendan is very disappointed," McMahon said, "but he is very dedicated and will be back to training. We will see how long Lavar is out and will assess Brendan's options. I'm confident the UFC will get Brendan back in the Octagon soon. "

The Schaub-Johnson tilt was scheduled to air on the FX prelims. No word just yet on which Facebook prelim fight will replace it.
"Frustrated would be an understatement," Schaub tweeted after the news broke. "Back to the gym."

UFC on FOX 5, which will take place at KeyArena in Seatlle, will now feature 12 fights.

Michael Chiesa off UFC on FOX 5 fight card due to illness

Michael Chiesa, the season 15 winner of FX's 'The Ultimate Fighter' (TUF), has been forced off of Saturday's UFC on FOX 5 fight card due to an unnamed "illness". The UFC Tweeted the news early this morning.

Chiesa was originally scheduled to face Rafaello Oliveira, but Oliveira withdrew from the bout due to a broken hand. Standout collegiate wrestler Marcus LeVesseur was tapped as Oliveira's replacement. Due to Chiesa's withdrawal coming so close to fight time, the bout with LeVesseur has been scrapped. It was originally slated to air as a portion of the FX broadcast.

Chiesa is 8-0 in mixed martial arts and 1-0 in the UFC. His only win came in June of this year when he submitted Al Iaquinta in the first round of the show's finale to win the 15th season of TUF. That season, the first to air on FX after 14 previous seasons aired on Spike TV, was also the first and only to air live fights at the end of each program.
