Gilbert Melendez's next title defense will be against Pat Healy.

Strikeforce announced on Wednesday that "El Nino," the promotion's lightweight champion, will meet Healy in the main event of its Sept. 29 event in Sacramento, Calf.

Heavyweight Daniel Cormier will compete in his final Strikeforce fight in the co-main event, but the promotion has yet to announce his opponent.

The card, which will take place at the Power Balance Pavilion (formerly known as Arco Arena), will air on Showtime. The undercard will air on Showtime Extreme.

Melendez (21-2) has won his last seven fights in a row. He most recently defeated Josh Thomson via split decision in May.

Healy (28-16) enters the title fight riding a five-fight winning streak. He extended his streak earlier this month when he beat Mizuto Hirota via unanimous decision.

Tickets for the event go on sale to the general public this Saturday.

The companies have since operated independently, and differences between White and Strikeforce’s broadcast partners at Showtime have led to a largely frosty relationship. However, this booking represents a temporary change in direction, as the UFC and Strikeforce rosters were previously considered mutually exclusive.
Following the fight, both Mir and Cormier will compete in the UFC after a decision this past fall for Strikeforce to dissolve its heavyweight division in favor of focusing on developing other weight classes. Many of the company’s heavyweights moved to the UFC, while Cormier stayed to finish out the heavyweight tournament."

Hmm, die had ik niet aan zien komen. Om 2 zaken opmerkelijk/raar:
1) Mir(vecht al in de UFC sinds weet ik hoe lang) gaat vechten in Strikforce, wat toch wel word gezien als een stapje terug. Misschien dat een titelgevecht de uitdaging voor hem is, want op de schopstoel bij de UFC zat ie zeker niet.
2) Mir doet het altijd slecht tegen sterke worstelaars. Cormier heeft daarnaast laten zien dat hij een aardige standup heeft, en een zeer aardige submission defence. Mir zal zelf toch ook wel snappen dat dit een slechte matchup voor hem is.

Dit gevecht van de HW GP champ was al contractueel vastgelegd met Showtime voordat de Strikeforce HWGP nog moest begonnen. In de tijd dat de Overeem de belt had was hier al sprake van.

Maar "weten" doe ik het niet zeker. Lijkt idd een slechte match-up voor Mir, maar toch echt wel de zwaarste test voor Cormier tot nu toe. Eind-examen voor overgang naar UFC, zou ik zeggen.

Mooie pot! Ik kijk ernaar uit, al is het maar omdat Mir een keer tegen een nieuwe tegenstander staat. Volgens mij heeft hij de serieuze HW's al zo'n beetje heeft gehad (behalve Struve en Overeem, maar die zit voorlopig op de bank).

Ik denk dat Mir nog wel eens aan het langste eind kan trekken. Maar het zal niet veel schelen. Zijn BJJ is veel beter, striking minder (maar niet extreem), worstelen veel minder, maar zijn clinch is wel goed. Ook met knieeen en trappen kan Mir beter uit de voeten.

Mir zag zichzelf door laatste verlies weer verwijderd van een titel fight in de UFC. Snelste weg terug is een gevecht in Strikeforce tegen de Strikeforce HW champ. Een company man zoals Mir is wel bereid dit te doen.
Wint hij dan is hij de Strikeforce HW champ en kan hij terug komen in de UFC en tegen een Overeem of de Champ gaan. Cormier kan dan lekker af gaan vallen en in LHW verder gaan om zijn vriendje Cain te vermijden.
Verliest Mir dan dan heeft Dana ook nog geen hoofdpijn en is Cormier een serieuze contender waarbij dan wel altijd de vraagteken bij zal blijven of hij niet "the real HW champ" is als hij naar LHW gaat in de UFC.

Mir kan hem wel submitten. Het wordt alleen lastig om hem naar de grond te krijgen en daar te houden. Mir heeft nog wel zware stoten. Geen vloeiende stand up maar raakt hij je goed is het einde ook zoek.

To hell with Tim Sylvia. This is more like it.
According to a report from USA Today, former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir will take his talents to the Hexagon to challenge Daniel Cormier in his final Strikeforce fight sometime later this year in October or November.
The bout will be broadcast live on Showtime, as usual, and it will be surreal to see Mir, a former UFC titleholder, standing inside a Strikeforce cage. Yet, that's exactly what we're going to get.
Here's what UFC President Dana White had to say about the match-up:

"There has been a lot of speculation as to who Cormier would fight next, and this is the fight that makes the most sense. The reality is, Cormier is one of the best heavyweights in the world. He just won the grand prix and beat Josh Barnett. He needs to fight opponents of that caliber, and Frank Mir is that guy."

This fight does make the most sense. As stated, Cormier just won the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix tournament and he needs top flight competition. That's not what Sylvia represents. Mir, on the other hand, is one fight removed from challenging for the UFC heavyweight title.
Sure, he got blown out and was only in that fight due to Alistair Overeem and his failed drug test, but he's a veteran with a big name who can provide a stiff test to see if Cormier is really ready to make the jump to the Octagon.
UPDATE: Initial reports stating the bout would take place on Sept. 29 as the co-main event to the Gilbert Melendez vs. Pat Healy card taking place in Sacramento were apparently premature. Instead, the bout will take place at a planned event in Oct. or Nov. of this year, possibly as a main event bout, making it a five-round fight. Stay tuned, as we'll keep you up to date either way

Hij heeft wat mooie subs in zijn rugzak en een goede stoot . Mir gaat niet zo makkelijk aan de kant worden gezet als sommige beweren. Agree. Cormier is een supertalent. Maar Mir is van een ander kaliber dan Barnet en Silva. Deze match geeft denk ik een goed eindicatie van waar wij Cormier moeten zien in het HW landschap.

dat niet hoor. lijkt me een toffe gast mir. cormier is echt een super talent, zelfde als valesquez. die jongens hebben nog niet zoveel gevochten, maar hebben zoveel rauw talent. mir is goed, maar dit gaat hij op tko of ud verliezen.

Dit moet Cormier winnen, zijn stand up alleen is al teveel voor Mir. Mir had al moeite in de stand up met big-nog. Het enige waar Mir beter in is is zijn BJJ, maar dan moet je een top worstelaar naar de grond krijgen. ik geef hem niet veel kans.

Wil niet zeggen dat het slecht was wat big nog deed, maar zijn striking zit bij lange na niet op het niveau van veel anderen waaronder Daniel Cormier. Het blijft ten slotte een BJJ specialist (dat was ook zijn fout tegen Mir, als hij was blijven boksen had hij hem makkelijk gepakt).

Aug 6, 2012 - Frank Mir was smack in the middle of taking the summer off to spend time with his family when the powers-that-be came to him with an unexpected offer. Just two months after unsuccessfully bidding for the UFC heavyweight championship, Mir was given an option to move over to sister company Strikeforce, just for one night, to face its recent Grand Prix winner, Daniel Cormier.

It was only months earlier when the UFC had asked B.J. Penn to move to Strikeforce and fight lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez, so while what they were asking him to do was not unprecedented, his answer was.

On Tuesday's edition of The MMA Hour, Mir was asked if he had to spend any time considering the decision.

"No," he said. "I was asked, and I was like, 'Sure.'"

Even after thinking about it, the potential rewards of the fight far outweighed the costs.

For one, he's not stepping outside of the Zuffa family. It's the same people he's used to dealing with. For another, it seemed like his best chance to face a top-tier heavyweight.

The undefeated Cormier (10-0) has rocketed up the ranks of the world's heavyweights in his last two fights, first knocking out Antonio Silva in just 3:56, and then battering highly regarded veteran Josh Barnett en route to a lopsided unanimous decision win in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix finale.

By most estimates, Cormier ranks somewhere around the top five (MMA Fighting has him ranked No. 3). Like most observers, Mir has also had his eyes opened by what he's seen from the former U.S. wrestling Olympian.

"The Barnett win actually impressed me extremely," he said. "Cormier obviously has an extremely strong wrestling background. I don't think it takes a genius to figure that out. And then his striking has been coming along. I was kind of curious to see how he would do against submissions, and there was a couple times, one that I can remember right now when there was a pretty legitimate attempt on his leg, and he didn't panic and had the defense to get out of it. And so, I feel that he's a very dangerous opponent.

"I still feel that I have to pick his game apart," Mir continued. "I think that if we fight each other, I'd have the advantage in striking and submissions, but as far as whether the fight stays on the feet or goes down, I don't think I'm going to have much of a choice. Wherever he wants to fight me, I'm going to have to be prepared for all areas."

While Mir acknowledges Cormier's wrestling superiority -- "his wrestling is light years ahead of what mine is, even on my best day and his worst," he said -- he believes that putting the fight on the ground could work in his favor, allowing him to employ his own ground skills, where he is a decorated jiu-jitsu black belt.

On the feet, Mir feels that he has advantages in reach and speed, to go with his natural size advantage. While Cormier is 5-foot-11, 238 pounds with a 71-inch reach, Mir is 6-foot-3, about 255 pounds and has a 79-inch reach.

But the size differential isn't an automatic benefit for him. In his last fight against Junior dos Santos, Mir checked in at 261 pounds, but said the weight negatively affected his mobility.

"I didn't really move as well," he said. "Against one of the guys who probably moves the best in the division, that was a recipe for disaster."

Cormier, though, is a very different fighter, who is equally confident contesting the fight in any aspect.

Beyond that, Mir said he isn't expecting any differences in going to Strikeforce from the UFC, where he has spent nearly his entire career. The only thing he has wondered about are any changes in the fight gloves, saying he would prefer to use the standard issue UFC gloves if possible.

He will also continue his doctor-prescribed testosterone replacement therapy. Mir said he regularly does blood work and was told his low testosterone levels posed a health risk. Saying the decision was more about his personal health than his fight career, Mir said he is planning to continue the treatment for the foreseeable future.

"As far as performance in the gym I couldn't tell you the difference," he said. "But as far as the areas of my health where I was starting to have issues -- as far as that goes, that gets too personal -- but I probably will always stay on this."

The Mir vs. Cormier fight does not currently have a date, but Mir said he believes it will take place in late October or November
