Inocente-Villante, Kyle-Staring set for 'Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy,' two more official

With the afterglow from this past Saturday's Ronda Rousey vs. Sarah Kaufman card finally subsiding, Strikeforce officials are now focusing on filling out their upcoming Sept. 29 event.

The promotion today added two new bouts – Guto Inocente (6-0 MMA, 0-0 SF) vs. Gian Villante (10-3 MMA, 3-2 SF) and Mike Kyle (19-8-1 MMA, 3-3-1 SF) vs. Dion Staring (28-7 MMA, 0-0 SF) – to the upcoming "Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy" event while also confirming previously reported booking of Caros Fodor (7-2 MMA, 5-1 SF) vs. Josh Thomson (19-5 MMA, 10-3 SF) and Quinn Mulhern (18-2 MMA, 3-1 SF) vs. Jorge Santiago (25-10 MMA, 2-0 SF).

Featuring a lightweight title fight between current champ Gilbert Melendez and challenger Pat Healy, "Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy" takes place Sept. 29 at Power Balance Pavilion in Sacramento, Calif.

The evening's main card airs on Showtime following prelims on Showtime Extreme. Strikeforce officials did not announce where each fight will fall on the evening's programming lineup.

Undefeated Brazilian Incoente, who currently trains with the Blackzilians, looks to remain undefeated following a Mat decision win over Virgil Zwicker. He meets fellow light heavyweight Villante, who boasts a three-fight win streak after downing Derrick Mehmen, Trevor Smith and Keith Berry in the past year.

Light heavyweight Kyle returns to the first time since a no-decision result against Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante this past May. Kyle originally suffered a disappointing 33-second loss in the bout, but the result was changed to a no decision when Cavalcante failed a post-fight drug screen. He now meets Staring, a Strikeforce newcomer who currently boasts a six-fight win streak. The Dutchman is a former heavyweight with 14 knockout and eight submission wins to his credit.

Aug 23, 2012 - With Rousey vs. Kaufman in the rear-view mirror, Strikeforce is now filling up its next card, scheduled for Sept. 29 in Sacramento, Calif.

The promotion officially added five new fights to the card on Wednesday. The bouts were: Josh Thomson vs. Caros Fodor, Isaac Vallie-Flagg vs. Adriano Martins, Mike Kyle vs. Dion Staring, Jorge Santiago vs. Quinn Mulhern andGian Villante vs. Carlos Inocente.

The Power Balance Pavilion, formerly known as Arco Arena, will host the event, headlined by Gilbert Melendez vs. Pat Healy for the Strikeforce lightweight title.

This will mark Thomson's first fight fight back since losing to Melendez in a title bout three months ago. Fodor most recently lost to Healy in March via submission.
The Vallie-Flagg vs. Martins and Santiago vs. Mulhern fights are especially important to their respective divisions as the winners could be next in line for a lightweight and welterweight title shot. Vallie-Flagg is undefeated in his last 11 fights, while Martins, a former Jungle Fights champion, is 10-1 in his last 11 fights.

The main card will air on Showtime, while the undercard is scheduled to air on Showtime Extreme. More bouts are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Mir vs. Cormier Heavyweight Showdown to Take Place Nov. 3

By Dave Meltzer - Senior Writer
Follow @MMAFighting on Twitter, and LikeMMA Fighting on Facebook.
Sep 3, 2012 - The first cross-promotional effort between UFC and Strikeforce looks to have a date.

The heavyweight battle with former UFC champion Frank Mir (16-6) facing Strikeforce Grand Prix tournament winner Daniel Cormier(10-0) will take place Nov. 3 in Oklahoma, according to a Showtime source and sources in the Cormier camp.

Mir recently did an interview withMMAFightCorner.com where he talked about the fight taking place on Nov. 4 in Oklahoma, a Sunday night. That would be unusual given Showtime has aired all of its major MMA shows for the past few years on Saturday night, and a Sunday night would be going head-to-head with what is usually the highest rated NFL game of the week.

The fight was first earmarked for Sept. 29 in Sacramento, Calif., but later moved off that date, likely because Strikeforce announced Gilbert Melendez vs. Pat Healy for the Strikeforce lightweight title for that show and felt Mir vs. Cormier should headline on its own.

This would be a first match of its kind with an existing UFC star facing an existing Strikeforce star. It was made due to unusual circumstances. UFC and Showtime reached an agreement when signing their most recent television deal late last year, where the Strikeforce heavyweight division would be moved over to UFC. In exchange, Showtime would get exclusivity on all contracted fighters in the other divisions as long as the two companies were working together.

However, when the deal was made, the Grand Prix tournament, which started in February 2011, had one fight left. Showtime negotiated for both the final to be on a Strikeforce show, where Cormier defeated Josh Barnett via decision, plus that the winner would have one more match on Showtime before moving to the UFC.

With Strikeforce having no heavyweights, Cormier would have had to have faced either a heavyweight from outside the UFC or a UFC fighter. Tim Sylvia at one point was approached, but Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta made the decision to go with Mir, coming off a loss on May 26 in Las Vegas when challenging Junior Dos Santos for the UFC heavyweight title.

Mir noted that he expects to be booed, given that Cormier, who grew up in Louisiana and now lives in San Jose, Calif., went to Oklahoma State University. In 2001, Cormier placed second in the nation at 184 pounds to Cael Sanderson, one of the country's all-time wrestling legends. Cormier is the best credentialed heavyweight wrestler on the Zuffa roster, with his career peaking in 2004 when he placed fourth in the Olympics. He was also the U.S. Olympic wrestling team captain in 2008, but couldn't compete due to his kidneys shutting down while trying to cut weight.

Cormier, who is the favorite in the fight, will go into UFC as a heavyweight. However, if teammateCain Velasquez wins the title from Junior Dos Santos in their scheduled Dec. 29 fight, Cormier has talked of the possibility of cutting to 205 and challenging Jon Jones, or whoever the light heavyweight champion is.
