ONE FC 5 Results: Andrei Arlovski and Tim Sylvia Fight to Controversial No Contest

By Luke Thomas - Senior Editor
Follow @MMAFighting on Twitter, and LikeMMA Fighting on Facebook.
Aug 31, 2012 - In the fourth bout between former UFC heavyweight champions Andrei Arlovski and Tim Sylvia, there was no resolution as the bout ended in a controversial no contest atONE FC 5.
Things started on a promising note.
The fight opened with Arlovski throwing multiple overhand rights, a tactic he would go back to throughout the course of the bout. Sylvia, however, implemented a strategy of using his size to lean on Arlovski, muscle him into the clinch along the fence and wear the Belarussian down. Sylvia was able to land numerous hard shots from the clinch even if referee Yuji Shimada had to separate the two numerous times due to inactivity.
In the second round, Arlovski fired a right hand that dislodged Sylvia's mouthpiece. They eventually clinch in the center of the cage, but were ultimately separated by the referee. Moments later, Arlovski dropped Sylvia with two hard right hooks as well as a left. He then followed up with two soccer kicks, the second of which landed with authority.
At first it seemed the fight was over as referee Shimada waved the action off. However, the referee was signaling a temporary halt to the bout. By ONE FC rules, a referee has to signal an 'open attack' before soccer kicks are allowed. Because Shimada didn't indicate to Arlovski the 'open attack' was permitted, the bout was halted and Sylvia was given time to recover. Arlovski was given a yellow card warning by Shimada as a result.
During the fight's intermission, Sylvia told referee Shimada and ringside officials he couldn't properly see and wasn't able to fight. As a result, the bout was stopped and due to Arlovski's illegal kick, declared a no contest.
Both fighters agreed to a fifth fight in ONE FC when interviewed by ONE FC commentator Jason Chambers after the fight.

Phil Baroni Steamrolls Rodrigo Ribeiro in One Minute

The New York Bad Ass is back. Or, he's back to winning, anyway. Phil Baroni won with ease on Friday over Rodrigo Ribeiro at ONE FC 5 with a stoppage that came as a result of soccer kicks.
The end came at 1:00 just of round 1.

Baroni opened the round landing a crisp right hand that rattled Ribeiro and had him immediately diving for takedowns. The AKA product was able to stop the attempts with a formidable sprawl and front head lock.

Ribeiro was able to launch no offense either from takedown or guard. The end came as Ribeiro's back was against the mat and fence and Baroni unloaded with head kicks from the standing position. Ribeiro turtled up on his right hip leaving referee Yuji Shimada no alternative but to stop the bout.

Baroni snaps his two-fight losing streak and brings his professional MMA career to 15-15. He's now 1-1 in ONE FC.

Jens Pulver Stopped by Eric Kelly in Second Round TKO

Former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver's ONE FC wasn't meant to be.
Despite a competitive first round, Pulver ultimately succumbed to strikes from the Filipino hometown talent and URCC featherweight champion Eric Kelly. Referee Moritaka Oshiro called a halt to the action at of 1:46 round two.

Pulver opened the bout southpaw, but was nailed with a swift, hard right hand that clearly hurt the former UFC champion.

Pulver was initially able to land on top in a scramble, but was soon reversed. Along the cage, however, Pulver able to stand and land a left hand of his own that rocked Kelly. The Filipino attempted two standing seo nages, but Pulver blocked both and was able to take Kelly's back on the second as they both ended up on the ground. A cradle kept Kelly from rolling base down, but Pulver eventually let him up.

In round two, two right hands from Kelly hurt Pulver early. Pulver went for a desperation takedown, but was stuffed with a deep sprawl and front headlock. After they stand, Kelly drilled Pulver with a body kick that crumpled him, which prompted referee Oshiro to step in and save the hurt fighter.

After the bout, Pulver indicated he's moving back to bantamweight. He also suggested retirement from fighting isn't far away.
"I'm 37 these days and retirement is on its way. One or two more," Pulver told the crowd.

Bibiano Fernandes Earns Unanimous Decision Win Over Gustavo Falciroli

The return of the Dream bantamweight champion to MMA action went as expected as Bibiano Fernandes earned a relatively easy unanimous decision win over Gustavo Falciroli at ONE FC 5. Scores for the bout were not announced.

Through the first two rounds, the bout looked more like a jiu-jitsu match with intermittent strikes that a full MMA fight. An initial knee tap takedown from Ferndnades put him in Falciroli's deep half guard, which is where the majority of the round was spent. Falciroli was defensive enough to not allow Fernandes to get much of anything going save for occasional elbows to Falciroli's thigh or small punches to his ribs. Still, the Australian surrendered borderline mount for the majority of the round.
At the start of the second, Fernandes drilled Falciroli with a hard, lunging right hand that sent him wobbling to the mat.

Fernandes pounced and was able to land several hard punches, but again, Falciroli rolled through into another deep half guard position. Fernades tried to counter this time by moving into side control on which side Falciroli wasn't defending, but the round was neary identical to the first.

By the time the third round began, both fighters - and especially Fernandes - appeared to be winded. Falcircoli shot in early, but Fernandes stuffed it and attempted a rear naked choke, triangle and oma plata in consecutive order all of which were prevented. From there the round was a striking match with neither man able to land much, although Fernandes arguably did just enough to outstrike Falciroli in the final frame.

The win brings Fernandes professional MMA record to 12-3.

    OneFC reageert snel: Soccerkicks allowed;

Just this past Friday (Aug. 31, 2012), Andrei Arlovski and Tim Sylvia battled it out for the fourth time inside a cage at ONE FC 5: "Pride of a Nation" in Manila, Philippines. "The Pitbull" vowed to get his revenge on "dickface," no matter the cost, and that's exactly what he did.

The cost ended up being the fight.

The Belarusian dropped "The Maine-iac" with two powerful right hands and then proceeded to kick the big man in his head while he was down (watch the .gif by clicking here). The problem, of course, is that he didn't get permission from the referee first, which one has to do in ONE FC in order to execute a soccer kick.

Arlovski was given a yellow card while Sylvia was given five minutes to recover. He couldn't, and the bout was called a no contest, planting the seeds for a fifth meeting between the eternal rivals.

If they do meet again and it goes the same way, it will be a clean win for Arlovski.

That's because the promotion announced that going forward, it will adopt PRIDE rules in regards to soccer kicks. From the organization's Twitter:

Effective immediately, ONE FC has adopted full PRIDE rules for soccer kicks. Catch ONE FC: Rise of Kings on Oct 6!
