The first cross-promotional effort between UFC and Strikeforce looks to have a date.

The heavyweight battle with former UFC champion Frank Mir (16-6) facing Strikeforce Grand Prix tournament winner Daniel Cormier (10-0) will take place Nov. 3 in Oklahoma, according to a Showtime source and sources in the Cormier camp.

Mir recently did an interview with MMAFightCorner.com where he talked about the fight taking place on Nov. 4 in Oklahoma, a Sunday night. That would be unusual given Showtime has aired all of its major MMA shows for the past few years on Saturday night, and a Sunday night would be going head-to-head with what is usually the highest rated NFL game of the week.

The fight was first earmarked for Sept. 29 in Sacramento, Calif., but later moved off that date, likely because Strikeforce announced Gilbert Melendez vs. Pat Healy for the Strikeforce lightweight title for that show and felt Mir vs. Cormier should headline on its own.

This would be a first match of its kind with an existing UFC star facing an existing Strikeforce star. It was made due to unusual circumstances. UFC and Showtime reached an agreement when signing their most recent television deal late last year, where the Strikeforce heavyweight division would be moved over to UFC. In exchange, Showtime would get exclusivity on all contracted fighters in the other divisions as long as the two companies were working together.

However, when the deal was made, the Grand Prix tournament, which started in February 2011, had one fight left. Showtime negotiated for both the final to be on a Strikeforce show, where Cormier defeated Josh Barnett via decision, plus that the winner would have one more match on Showtime before moving to the UFC.

With Strikeforce having no heavyweights, Cormier would have had to have faced either a heavyweight from outside the UFC or a UFC fighter. Tim Sylvia at one point was approached, but Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta made the decision to go with Mir, coming off a loss on May 26 in Las Vegas when challenging Junior Dos Santos for the UFC heavyweight title.

Mir noted that he expects to be booed, given that Cormier, who grew up in Louisiana and now lives in San Jose, Calif., went to Oklahoma State University. In 2001, Cormier placed second in the nation at 184 pounds to Cael Sanderson, one of the country's all-time wrestling legends. Cormier is the best credentialed heavyweight wrestler on the Zuffa roster, with his career peaking in 2004 when he placed fourth in the Olympics. He was also the U.S. Olympic wrestling team captain in 2008, but couldn't compete due to his kidneys shutting down while trying to cut weight.

Cormier, who is the favorite in the fight, will go into UFC as a heavyweight. However, if teammate Cain Velasquez wins the title from Junior Dos Santos in their scheduled Dec. 29 fight, Cormier has talked of the possibility of cutting to 205 and challenging Jon Jones, or whoever the light heavyweight champion is.

Mooi gevecht lijkt me dit!
Denk dat Cormier dit wel moet kunnen winnen, maar Mir is ook niet uit te vlakken...
Op het moment dat het naar de grond gaat kan Mir in principe voor iedereen een groot gevaar opleveren... Enfin... het feit dat je Big Nog op gruwelijke wijze kunt submitten zegt genoeg...

Maar als ik mijn geld erop moet zetten zeg ik Cormier by KO of TKO in ronde twee...

Na de beelden tegen big Nog, vind ik Mir wel echt een beest... Cormier vind ik een toegevoegde waarde, en is stand up een sloper. Al het naar de grond gaat, heeft Cormier heel weinig kans denk ik. Hij moet het staand doen, en afmaken.

Ehh is Cormier niet juist van huis uit een worstelaar? Volgens mij heeft ie zelfs een (gouden?) plak op de Spelen gepakt....

Vind Mir juist zwaar overrated en overwinning tegen Big Nog was meer een soort van lucky shot imo. Denk dat Cormier dit met gemak gaat winnen.

X2 denk ook dat cormier dit makkelijk wint. En dat hij niet tegen mir op de grond kan is onzin. Barnett is minstens zo'n goede grondrechten zo niet beter dan mir. Vind mir sowieso wat overpratend, dit wordt een tok voor cormier

Sara McMann vs. Liz Carmouche Slated for Strikeforce: Cormier vs. Mir

Sara McMann will make her Strikeforce debut on Nov. 3 against Liz Carmouche.

According to sources close to the event, McMann and Carmouche have agreed to meet on the Strikeforce: Cormier vs. Mir card, which will take place at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, OK. Strikeforce is expected to announce the fight shortly.

McMann, who signed with Strikeforce earlier this week, is a 2004 Olympic wrestling silver medalist. Since making her MMA debut in May 2011, she has gone 6-0, most recently defeating Shayna Baszler at Invicta FC 2 in July.

Carmouche (7-2) has won her last two fights in a row. She holds notable wins over Kaitlin Young and Jan Finney in her short MMA career.

The top 135-pound bout is expected to air on the main card of the Showtime-televised event. The winner could very well be next in line for a title shot against bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey.

Ik denk dat Cormier heel lastig te subben is, zijn standup vind ik nog steeds zijn zwakste punt

Hunt dacht pas in februari weer aan de bak te kunnen, dus dat gaat hem niet worden. Werdum lijkt me best een toffe optie.

Dat zou idd een interessante match up zijn! Volgens mij krijgt Werdum DC niet naar de grond en wil DC niet naar de grond. Staand zijn ze beide zeer gegroeid. Lijkt mij een mooie partij.

Cormier is van huis uit een worstelaar en kan dus ook prima uit de voeten op de grond. Staand hebben ze idd beide veel geleerd. Lijkt mij ook een mooie matchup!

True. Maar gezien de BJJ van Werdum kan ik mij voorstellen dat hij hem niet standaard op zn rug zal willen leggen. Maar goed. Wie weet.

Cormier heeft een veel betere standpunt dan werdum. Denk echt dat weinig mensen tegen cormier een kans maken

Frank Mir (16-6 MMA, 14-6 UFC) will not fight Daniel Cormier (10-0 MMA, 7-0 SF), as it turns out.

An undisclosed injury has forced the ex-UFC champ to withdraw from "Strikeforce: Cormier vs. Mir," which takes place Nov. 3 at Chesapeake Energy Center in Oklahoma City, Okla., and airs live on Showtime and Showtime Extreme.

MMAjunkie.com confirmed the news on Tuesday night with a source close to the promotion following an initial report from news show Sports Rage. It's unknown whether a replacement for Mir has been found.

Sources indicated to MMAjunkie.com that a knee injury could be to blame for Mir's withdrawal.

Just another injury on the ever growing list of 'great matchups getting ruined by injuries'. This was the type of fight that Strikeforce needed, a relatively big name in Frank Mir versus one of Strikeforce's top HWs. But of course, Mir won't be fighting due to an injury. It would be interesting to some kind of information regarding how much money the UFC health insurance plans have covered, you would think with all the recent injuries it's gotta be fairly high.

ah ja, check. Die had ik gelezen. Maar ik bedoelde eigenlijk dat er nog niet staat dat Mir afgezegd heeft.
Daarom is deze thread wel degelijk nieuwswaardig.
