UFC on FUEL 5 bonuses: headliners Struve and Miocic win top honors

When Stefan Struve wins, he often wins bonuses. This time he brought opponent Stipe Miocic along with him.

Struve and Miocic took home the Fight of the Night award for their main event bout at UFC on FUEL TV 5 at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham, England, the UFC announced Saturday evening. They'll pocket $40,000 each for their efforts. Struve brings his record to 25-5 and his consecutive UFC win streak to four fights. Miocic picks up his first professional loss, bringing his MMA ledger to 9-1.

Their bout started off better for Miocic as Struve failed to use his reach. Miocic landed multiple hard shots to the body and more effective strikes overall throughout the first round. In the second frame, however, Struve pumped his jab more and through increased output landed hard hooks and combinations. Struve had Miocic backing up against the fence before Miocic slipped on the mat. As he tried to right himself, Struve badly rocked him with a right straight. Seeing his opponent hurt and obviously off balance, Struve landed several more uppercuts before referee Herb Dean was forced to call a halt to the action.

This makes Struve's fifth fight award, although it's his first Fight of the Night bonus. He has three previous Submission of the Night bonuses and one for Knockout of the Night.

Speaking of Knockout of the Night, England's own Brad Pickett earned this distinction for Saturday's event, thereby picking up his sixth overall Zuffa post-fight bonus. Pickett landed an uppercut after a long wind-up, knocking out respected striker Yves Jabouin almost cold with that one shot.

Surprising many fans and experts, Matt Wiman submitted the submission-savvy Paul Sass and earned Submission of the Night for his efforts. After avoiding several submission attempts from Sass, Wiman eventually put Sass in a precarious spot for the armbar and forced Sass to grip his hands to avoid Wiman's attack. Wiman fought through it, handing Sass his first professional loss and picking up his fifth UFC post-fight bonus.

Che Mills defeats Duane Ludwig after knee injury
A left knee injury put an early end to Duane Ludwig's night at UFC on Fuel TV 5 on Saturday in Nottingham, England.
The veteran Denver welterweight was working in the clinch with Che Mills in the first round when he suddenly dropped to the mat. Referee Herb Dean stepped in and waved off the bout. The time was 2:28 for what goes into the books as a TKO.

Mills, a native of Gloucester, England, controlled the bulk of the fight. Mills scored a quick takedown and spent most of the round controlling from the top. Ludwig had worked his way back to his feet when his knee gave way.

"It wasn't really a set game plan," said Mills. "I was training so hard and was ready for anything. The takedown was there, so I took it."

Ludwig (21-14) has now dropped three straight and is 2-5 in his most recent UFC stint, with all of his losses via stoppage. Mills (15-5, 1 NC), in his first fight after losing to Rory MacDonald at UFC 145, won for the sixth time in his past seven.

    John Hathaway outlasts John Maguire

John Hathaway has long established he'll use his size and reach advantage to grind his way to victories over fellow lightweights.

His bout with John Maguire on Saturday at UFC on Fuel TV 5 in Nottingham, England, was no exception.

The 6-foot-1 fighter from Brighton picked his spots and cruised to a victory over his fellow Englishman. It was his third straight win in seventh in his past eight fights, all of which has gone the distance. All three judges scored the bout 30-27 in favor of Hathaway.

Round one was mostly spent standing, with Maguire unable to find his range and Hathaway mostly content to counter.

Hathaway controlled round two from start to finish, scoring and early takedown and controlling from the top. Round three looked more like round one, as Hathaway, who sensed he had the fight in the bag, didn't take many chances. Maguire scored a takedown with about 90 seconds left, but Maguire, a submission specialist, couldn't take advantage of his position.

Maguire dropped to 18-4 and had a seven-fight win streak snapped.

Matt Wiman turns tables on Paul Sass

Paul Sass came into his bout against Matt Wiman with a much-deserved reputation as a submission master. The Liverpool native was 13-0 heading into UFC on Fuel TV 5, with 12 of his wins via tapout.

But Saturday night in Notthingham, he met his match in the wily Wiman. Taken down early in the fight, Wiman, working from the bottom, matched Sass sub for sub and eventually took the fight via armbar.

Time of the submission was 3:48 of the first round.

Wiman (15-6) won for the ninth time in 13 UFC fights, including five of his last six bouts. He was emotional in his postfight interview, holding back tears.

"You can't go in there and break him, you've just got to try to beat him," Wiman said. I knew Sass was going to bring it, I have so much respect for him. I had so many nerves coming into this fight. I just feel lucky and blessed to come out on the winning side."

Brad Pickett lives up to 'One Punch' nickname

In case you forgot, they call British bantamweight Brad Pickett "One Punch" for a reason.

The London native was engaged in a tight, back-and-forth opening round against Montreal's Yves Jabouin on Saturday when he came out of nowhere with a beautifully executed right uppercut to the jaw.

Jabouin hit the Nottingham mat and Pickett pounced for two more academic right hands before Leon Roberts stopped the bout at UFC on Fuel TV 5.

The time of the stoppage was three minutes, 40 seconds.

"With a name like One Punch, it puts added pressure on me, especially where it was a long time since I've got one. Especially against the best technical striker in our division. He's phenomenal."

With the win, Pickett (22-6), who's always had potential but has faced trouble putting together a string of victories recently, seems to finally be building momentum. He's won two fights in a row and four of six.

Jabouin dropped to 18-8 and lost for the first time as a bantamweight.

Dan Hardy impresses in win over Amir Sadollah

After a four-fight losing streak, Dan Hardy had to re-tool his approach to his game.
Two fights later, the welterweight who had been pegged as a one-dimensional striker appears well on his way.

Nottingham's hometown hero used a well-rounded game to defeat Amir Sadollah in the co-feature bout at UFC on Fuel TV 5 on Saturday. With the raucous British crowd behind him, he cruised to a unanimous decision victory. The judges scores were 29-28, 29-28, and 30-27.

Hardy was cautious in round one, primarily countering an active Sadollah in a round which stayed in the standup. But he picked up the pace in round two and dominated the round, scoring a pair of takedowns and landing some late ground and pound.

In round three, Hardy again scored a takedown off a double midway through. He controlled the bloodied Sadollah for most of the rest of the fight, then stayed on him right up to the horn after Sadollah managed to get back to his feet late.
In his postfight interview, Hardy said it was important to fight a smart fight.

"Yeah, I fought just start trading punches. I like wars as much as you guys, but I've got to be smart, I've got to be sensitive. I've got to take my shots. It was a good fight, I enjoyed it."

    Stefan Struve stops Stipe Miocic

Once Stefan Struve found his groove, there was no stopping him.

The heavyweight kickboxer from the Netherlands looked slow and plodding during the opening round of his UFC on Fuel TV 5 main event against Stipe Miocic in Nottingham, England.

But Struve settled in during the second round and punished his opponent. A series of big right hands knocked Miocic from the ranks of the unbeaten, referee Herb Dean stopped the onslaught at 3:50 of the round.

It was the fourth straight victory for Struve (25-5), all via stoppage, and his sixth in his past seven fights.

"That's part of the game plan," Struve said. "I saw that he was slowing down in the second round. I caught him with an uppercut. I always want to finish, I'm locked and loaded for the kill.

Miocic (9-1), a hard-hitting EMT from the Cleveland, showed little fear of the 7-foot Struve's reach advantage in the early going, wading in and landing early and often on route to winning the round.

But Struve found his footing in the second round and began unloading on the granite-chinned Miocic. The end came after Miocic slipped. Though he got back to his feet, Struve met him with a huge right uppercut to the jaw. That started a flurry of six straight rights. Seeing that Miocic was out on his feet, Dean stepped in and stopped the bout.

"I heard some things about my power in the past, but I think they might change their opinion right now," Struve said. "I'm working on some things, I'm working on using my reach better. Some moments were pretty good, some weren't that good. I think I've shown I got a hard chin."
