Max Holloway beats Leonard Garcia in close split-decision

It was a typical Leonard Garcia fight. Wild, close, and controversial.
In the end though, two of the three judges saw it the way of his opponent, Max Holloway, who was given a split decision win by scores of 29-28, 29-28, 28-29.

Holloway likely won a close first in the UFC 155 prelim bout, rocking Garcia and dropping him with a big right hand, but though he looked for a finish, he couldn't close it out and pulled back. From then on, Garcia worked to remake the fight in his image, turning it into a brawl.

He seemed to gain momentum as the fight went on, and as Holloway wore down. He scored a pair of takedowns in the fight, but he did spend a lot of time as he normally does swinging and missing. While Holloway landed his sharper combinations, Garcia would occasionally land a haymaker, and rattled Holloway on more than one occasion.

The loss was the fourth straight for Garcia, who fell to 15-10-1. He has fought to split decisions in five of his last 10 fights, with a sixth ruled a split draw.

Holloway is now 7-1 after his third win of 2012.

Todd Duffee returns to UFC with KO of Phil De Fries

It was a long time between octagon appearances for Todd Duffee, but the massive heavyweight returned with a vengeance at UFC 155.
Displaying the power that made him an intriguing prospect his first time around, Duffee knocked out Phil De Fries at 2:04 of the first round.

"Two years is a long time," he said afterward. "I'm happy to be back."

The fight was a quick burst of action. Duffee came out quickly with a power combination that backed De Fries up, but the Brit withstood the attack and managed to take Duffee down.

He didn't stay there for long, returning to his feet in seconds. Back in his comfort zone, he soon changed the momentum of the bout by landing a crushing uppercut. A second one knocked De Fries back towards the fence, where Duffee swarmed him with a barrage of power shots until De Fries crumpled to the ground and the referee had seen enough to call a halt to the action.
"It awesome," Duffee said. "I heard right hand, right hand, right hand, and I kept throwing it."

Duffee's last appearance in the UFC came at UFC 114 in May 2010, when he lost in a third-round KO to Mike Russow in a fight he had been leading up until the knockout punch. Afterward, he was cut with UFC president Dana White citing attitude problems for his unexpected release.

Away from the UFC, Duffee fought only twice, losing to Alistair Overeem in December 2010 and taking all of 2011 off before defeating Neil Grove in April. He's now 8-2.

DeFries fell to 9-2 with 1 no contest.

    Jamie Varner beats Melvin Guillard

It was two weeks late, and worth the wait. UFC 155's prelim bout between Jamie Varner and Melvin Guillard was originally supposed to take place on Dec. 15, but was pushed back after Varner fell ill on the day of the fight. That led to some bad blood, and ultimately, a great fight.
After three action-packed rounds at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, it was Varner emerging victorious in a split decision by the bizarre score of 30-27, 30-27, 27-30.

That led UFC color commentator Joe Rogan to remark that whoever scored it for Guillard three rounds to none "should never work again."

The fight wasn't quite so easy to score though, as Varner was the man moving forward and scoring more takedowns while it appeared that Guillard was the one landing cleaner strikes, particularly in the second half of the fight.

Both fighters had their moments. Varner briefly dropped Guillard with a left hook behind the ear in the first, and Guillard landed a stinging uppercut in the second that scored points. But it was mostly Varner's forward movement and ability to take the fight to the mat that likely won him the bout.

The third round was the closest, as the two exchanged top position and momentum shifts. The bout ended seconds after Varner slammed Guillard down on the mat, and the two shared an embrace before the final decision was read.

Varner has now won two of his three bouts since returning to the UFC, improving his record to 21-7 with 2 no contests.

Guillard's struggles continued, as the loss made it defeats in four of his last five. He's now 30-12-2 with 1 no contest.

Erik Perez beats Byron Bloodworth via TKO

Rising Mexican star Erik Perez spent more time than most main carders doing interviews during the run-up to his UFC 155 fight, and when he got his chance in the cage, he continued the dominant run that's generated so much attention in him.
Perez overwhelmed Byron Bloodworth, eventually finishing in a first-round TKO.

The time of the referee stoppage was 3:50.

Perez had no problems in weaving his way to victory, dropping Bloodworth early with a knee to the body. He followed his opponent to the ground where he worked to open up holes with elbows and punches, and he eventually overwhelmed him with ground strikes en route to the stoppage.

According to the UFC, Perez is the first bantamweight ever to open up his UFC career with three straight first-round stoppage wins. He's also finished Ken Stone and John Albert.

"[It's] a lot of pressure but I'm training hard," he said afterward. "I'm going to stay focused and fight hard."

He's now 13-4 while Bloodworth dropped his second straight, falling to 6-3.

    Eddie Wineland beats Brad Pickett

It's back to the drawing board for Brad Pickett. The British fighter, nicknamed "One Punch" for his power, was on the receiving end of far too many, taking a beating at the hands of Eddie Wineland en route to a split-decision defeat.
    The judges scored it 30-27, 30-27, 28-29.

Pickett had hoped that a win could vault him into the UFC bantamweight title picture.

Instead, it was Wineland who attempted to place his name into the slot with the UFC 155 victory.

The fight, which largely resembled a boxing match for long stretches, saw him knock Pickett down twice in the first round, and pepper him throughout.

"He's got a melon on him like a coconut," Wineland said. "I hit him with everything I had, I couldn't put him away."

Wineland's advantages were his hand speed and ability to master the distance between them, as he continually landed sharp right hands.

Wineland is now 20-8-1 while Pickett fell to 22-7.

Derek Brunson wins Octagon debut by beating Chris Leben

On Derek Brunson's road to the UFC, the last two stops were losses in two separate organizations. That alone is a bizarre route to take. Stranger yet? When he got to the octagon, he won.
Fighting as a short-notice replace, Brunson used his wrestling advantage to out-point a returning Chris Leben at UFC 155. All three judges scored it 29-28 for him.

Brunson seized momentum early, scoring a quick takedown early in the first and spending the majority of the round in top position, peppering Leben with strikes, and landing one crushing elbow. Leben ate it all and got back to his feet with 30 seconds left in the round, but the round was unquestionably Brunson's.

In the second, Leben stuffed Brunson's first takedown attempt but went down on the second. This time, he didn't stay down nearly as long, but by the time he got to his feet, both fighters looked exhausted.

The third was a battle of wills, as Leben tried to find the knockout punch, but after over a year away, he didn't have much steam on anything he threw and Brunson got a late takedown to seal it.

Unlike most Leben bouts, the fight was no crowd-pleaser as the MGM Grand Garden Arena broke into boos on more than one occasion.

Leben was fighting for the first time since a one-year suspension due to testing positive for painkillers at UFC 138. He is now 22-9.

Brunson is 10-2 after locking up his first UFC victory.

Yushin Okami beats Alan Belcher in rematch of 2006 bout

Six years later, the rematch looked just like the first time around.
Yushin Okami and Alan Belcher may have overhauled their respective games in the intervening times, but the result between them was exactly the same as it was in 2006. Okami repeated his performance from that fight, defeating Belcher via unanimous decision at UFC 155

    The judges scored 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.

Okami controlled most of the fight, suffering only a lone blip when he was knocked down by a Belcher right early in the third. Aside from that, he used his clinch game and wrestling to keep Belcher under control. On several occasions, Okami advanced to dominant positions including side control and full mount, and though he couldn't finish Belcher, he scored with strikes from the top.

His most dominant stretch came late in the third when he got full mount and rained down strikes before taking Belcher's back and looking for a choke.

When it was over, Belcher shook his head in frustration, and some of the MGM Grand Garden Arena crowd booed.

According to FightMetric, Okami out-landed Belcher 81-15.

Belcher saw his four-fight win streak snapped, as he fell to 18-7.

For Okami, it is two wins in a row as he moved his record to 28-7.

Costa Philippou ends Tim Boetsch's run as contender with TKO win

When it comes to the UFC middleweight title contender picture, it's Tim Boetsch out, Costa Philippou in.
After a hard-fought first round during which Boetsch out-struck him 34-19, Philippou took control, taking advantage of an injured Boetsch and finishing him in the third of their UFC 155 bout after a series of ground strikes at 2:11.

Boetsch performed to his favorite status in the first, scoring a pair of takedowns and getting a front kick knockdown in the final seconds.

In between rounds though, it was apparent something was wrong with Boetsch, as his corner man Matt Hume told him to work through the pain. It seemed as though he injured his right hand. To make matters worse, he was poked in the eye early in the second and never really seemed to recover afterward. From there, he backed off his aggressiveness, content to try to pull guard, and Philippou obliged him, delivering punishment from the top.

Boetsch tried one last gasp in the third when he shot for a takedown, but Philippou sprawled and ended up on top, and he opened up with strikes, not letting up until he got the TKO.

The win made it five in a row for Philippou, who took the fight on short notice. He's now 12-2 with 1 no contest.

It's a major step back from Boetsch, who was coming off a four-fight win streak including a recent victory over the explosive Cuban Hector Lombard. The defeat dropped his record to 16-5.

Jim Miller outlasts Joe Lauzon in bloody thriller

By the time it was over, the octagon mat looked like a crime scene, but instead of facing trouble for what he'd done, Jim Miller had his hand raised in victory.
Fighting for the first time since his disappointing May loss to Nate Diaz, Miller came out with both guns blazing and savaged Joe Lauzon early, then fended off late comeback attempts to earn the UFC 155 victory in the night's co-main event.

Miller looked hellbent on finishing in the first round, using a vicious dirty boxing approach to slash Lauzon open with elbows and uppercuts. When the opening five minutes were over, Lauzon was already a bloodied mess and needed to be looked at by the cageside doctor.

Miller scored an early takedown in the second and added to the damage, but showing the heart that's led to a series of bonus awards, Lauzon refused to surrender and mounted a comeback.

Late in the third, Lauzon tried an ankle lock and a guillotine, fighting to the final horn, but fell short.

"Joe is one of the toughest guys in the world," Miller said afterward as the crowd bathed the fighters in applause.

According to FightMetric, Miller landed 91 significant strikes to Lauzon's 35.

Back on the winning track, Miller is now 22-4.

    Lauzon dropped to 22-8.

Cain Velasquez recaptures heavyweight title, savaging Junior dos Santos

For Cain Velasquez, revenge was a dish served cold. One year after suffering a 64-second knockout loss at the hands of Junior dos Santos, Velasquez decided to spread out his vengeance, going all 25 minutes in a surprisingly one-sided romp over his rival at UFC 155.
It was so dominant that the judges scored it 50-45, 50-43, 50-44 for Velasquez, who became only the third multi-time heavyweight champion in UFC history, after Randy Couture and Tim Sylvia.

By the end of the violence, dos Santos was cut, bruised and had a serious hematoma on the right side of his face.
"Tonight he was better than me," dos Santos said afterward.

The stats agreed. According to FightMetric, Velasquez out-landed him 210-66, and scored more strikes in every round.

For at least the first half of the first round, there was drama, as Velasquez spent time flailing at dos Santos' legs, trying to take him to the mat. dos Santos denied him at first, but the fight's complexion changed soon after Velasquez dropped the champ with a right hand.

dos Santos was badly hurt, and Velasquez looked for the finish with left hands from the top, but dos Santos gamely held on to the horn.

He never truly recovered though. While he had occasional moments, landing some body punches, he never put Velasquez in any real jeopardy. Meanwhile, Velasquez kept his usual relentless pace, scoring a stunning 11 takedowns during the bout.

Heading into the fight, dos Santos had only been taken down twice in his UFC career and held down for a combined total of 13 seconds.

He had also never lost a round, but against Velasquez (11-1), he was shut out, though he did fight bravely and fought closer rounds in the fourth and fifth than he did in the opening three frames.

Afterward, dos Santos (15-2) promised to be a thorn in Velasquez's side.

"Cain Velasquez, like you said, I'm going to come back and I'm going to take my belt again," he said.

But for one night, it was Velasquez's coronation. One year after an embarrassing loss, he was spectacular, and he was again, the champion.

"It feels so good to get this," said the new champ, same as the old champ.
