Broner Suspended

The World Boxing Council has suspended former two division world champion Adrien Broner (28-1, 22 KO’s) for his comment he made to Showtime following his 10 round unanimous decision win over Carlos Molina (17-2-1, 7 KO’s) last Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Broner easily out-pointed Molina on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidana fight. The WBC wants an apology from Broner for them to lift the suspension.

In the post-fight interview with Showtime’s Jim Gray, Broner said “I just beat the [expletive] out of a Mexican.” Gray immediately told Broner not to talk like that and he was on his best behavior for the remainder of the interview. However, the damage was done because the crowd booed Broner, and boxing fans at home likely were in shock at the comment.

Besides the comment that Broner made to Gray, he also spent much of the fight needlessly taunting Molina, and trying to make him look bad. It wasn’t needed because Molina was a fighter that Golden Boy Promotions selected to make Broner look good. Molina wasn’t a top 15 contender; he was just a fighter of moderate talent giving it all he could with the talent that he had, and it was clear from the start that he had no chance of beating Broner. That’s why it looked bad for Broner to be taunting Molina the entire fight. It’s one thing for a fighter to be taunting someone at their own level or higher, but it’s another thing to taunt a guy that is below you in the talent department. Broner’s taunting made him look bad, because it wasn’t necessary.

Broner’s suspension by the WBC probably won’t effect his rankings by the other sanctioning bodies, although he’s not yet ranked in the top 15 at 140 yet anyway. Still, Broner needs to do whatever he can to smooth things out with the WBC by apologizing and doing whatever they ask.

Broner did not look good in beating Molina. The fight was more competitive than it was expected to be, as Broner lacked the power, speed and work rate to stop Molina. Broner’s taunting of Molina also caused him to take shots that he wouldn’t have taken if he had approached the fight in a serious manner.

I can’t imagine Floyd Mayweather Jr. asking Broner to fight on his next undercard on September 13th after this, as Mayweather will be fighting on the Mexican Independence holiday.

The World Boxing Council holds human equality as its banner and will not accept a former WBC champion to make racially offensive statements.
Since words have different meanings and can be interpreted in different ways , the WBC is issuing this open letter to Adrien Broner to either clarify what he meant with his words or to issue a public apology if those words were intended to be despective and offensive .

Adrien Broner is hereby suspended from participating in any WBC sanctioned Championship and will be excluded from the WBC Ratings until the time he makes a public apology satisfactorily to the public of the world.
Fighting on the undercard of Saturday night's Floyd Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana event, Broner extended his record to 28-1 with a unanimious decision victory over Molina (17-2-1), an American-born fighter who is of both Argentinian and Mexican descent. After the win, Broner told Showtime's Jim Gray, via the New York Daily News' Mitch Abramson, "I've beaten Africans and I just beat the f--- out of a Mexican."

The comments were met with universal disgust. Gray immediately scolded Broner on the air and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer was equally disappointed in his 24-year-old fighter, via BoxingScene.com's Rick Reeno:
Sometimes [Broner] says stuff without really thinking, because as I came out into the ring the first thing he said to me was 'I'm so sorry that I said what I said.' He's a young guy and I'm going to keep trying to explain to him, and maybe somebody like Bernard who has the experience would certainly be a great coach in that regard.

Broner stranger to controversy. According to Abramson, he once flushed $20 bills down the toilet in a social media video, and he has always seemingly thrived while playing the villainous role in the boxing world.

Wow ik had niet in de gaten dat deze schorsing voor een hele jaar is. Wat is dat nou weer voor onzin dat is overdreven. Als dat door zoiets komt kan ik me alleen maar voorstellen dat een blanke vechter die zijn tegenstander een 'nigger' noemt minstens 2 jaar niet mag vechten.

Ik vind dat hij niet al te lang geschorst moet worden, met name wegens 2 redenen:

1: Ik vind dat ze iemand met een IQ van een baksteen niet kwalijk kunnen nemen als die onzin uitkraamt. Ik bedoel, we zouden toch ook niet boos worden als iemand met een zwaar geestelijke beperking dit soort dingen riep. We hebben het hier over iemand die een keer zei: "I'm completely different, I changed 360(!!) degrees"
Van zo iemand moet je verder weinig verwachten.

2: Ik zie hem graag gauw nog een pak slaag krijgen (althans, als hij het nog aandurft na het gevecht tegen Maidana om tegen boksers op niveau te boksen).

'k zou het niet weten, eerlijk gezegd heb ik een NL sporter nooit iets vergelijkbaars horen zeggen. In Engeland hebben ze Suarez toen zo geschorst na z'n aanvaring met Evra en natuurlijk Anelka met z'n Quenelle… Volgens mij wordt er wel hard tegen opgetreden.

Voor atleten weet ik het niet, maar als je in Nederland op nationale tv iets racistisch uitkraamt kom je echt niet in de problemen zelfs als je beroemd bent. Zoals die imbeciel Jack Spijkerman zoiets zei tegen Humberto Soto. Amerika is een compleet ander wereld.
