WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) successfully weighed in on Friday in coming in at 158.75 lbs. for his title defense against challenger Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York. Cotto weighed in at 155 lbs, which is kind of surprising because he’s likely to come in over 160lbs after he rehydrates.
You have to wonder if he messed up taking more weight off than he needed to when draining down to make weight for the fight. Whatever the case, Cotto is going to have his work cut out for him even if his weight is perfect.

Sergio was heavily booed by the huge pro-Cotto crowd, but it didn’t bother Martinez at all. He actively encouraged Cotto’s fans to boo him more by whipping his hands in the air to push them to give more boos. What Cotto’s fans probably don’t know is that the boos will motivate Martinez even more to give Cotto a real beat down on Saturday night and not have mercy on him when he starts inflicting punishment on him.
During the face to face stare down, Cotto showed no emotion at all in staring straight at Martinez like he was staring through him instead of at him. Martinez really got into the stare down and he openly smirked at Cotto, giving him a look of total contempt, as Cotto were totally beneath him in class.
“I’m ready to make history tomorrow,” Cotto said after the weigh-in.

In looking at the body language of the two fighters, Sergio looked a lot more confident than Cotto. Indeed, Cotto looked like a beaten fighter during the weigh-in, and it’s going to be really tough on him trying to beat a fighter as big as Sergio.
Martinez’s promoter Lou Dibella said that Sergio’s not sure if he’ll wear a knee sleeve to give his surgically repaired right knee support or not. The New York State Athletic Commission said that Sergio can wear the knee sleeve, and that it’s not considered a performance enhancing product. Rather the sleeve is intended to protect Sergio’s knee from further injury.
