Default Women return to Bellator with signings of Marloes Coenen and Julia Budd

After shuttering its women’s divisions in 2013, Bellator MMA is reestablishing its 145-pound weight class for females, and two notables are among the first signings.

Officials today announced that former Strikeforce champion*Marloes Coenen*(21-6) and Invicta FC vetJulia Budd*have signed with the promotion and will fight at a Bellator event later this year.

However, today’s announcement didn’t address the possibility of*Gina Carano*(7-1), who’s also been a UFC target despite her five-year layoff, also joining the Bellator roster.

Still, it’s good news for female fighters. After Bellator shut down its women’s divisions a year ago, most of the world’s top talent headed to the UFC, which launched its first female weight class in February 2013, and Invicta FC, the upstart all-female promotion whose roster continually features top-10 talent. However, with former Strikeforce head Scott Coker recently taking over the helm of Bellator, WMMA has again become a priority.

“We’re incredibly excited to bring in two of the best athletes competing in our sport today,” Coker stated. “We are making a commitment to bring back the female division to Bellator, and feature some of the world’s best in the Bellator cage.”

Right now, the UFC boasts only 135- and 115-pound divisions, and there are no immediate plans for a 145-pound weight class. That could allow Bellator to stock its roster with many of the world’s top featherweights.

Coenen, a 33-year-old Dutch fighter, is a 14-year pro who’s primarily fought at featherweight but held Strikeforce’s bantamweight title from 2010-2011. After a 4-1 run, she earned a shot at the Invicta FC 145-pound championship but suffered a TKO loss to Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino in her most recent bout. She’s been on the sidelines since July 2013.

“It is great to be working together with Scott Coker again as we both have the same vision on fighting,” stated Coenen, who has 18 stoppages in 21 career wins. “My style is fighting with the objective to knock my opponent out or to submit her. That is exactly what I am planning to do the very first second I step into the Bellator cage.”

Budd, meanwhile, is a 31-year-old Canadian who turned pro in 2010. After a four-fight stint with Strikeforce, she then signed with Invicta FC, where she went 4-0 with three stoppage victories. Most recently, she earned a decision win over*Charmaine Tweet at Invicta FC 7 in December.

Altijd een coenen fan. Super dat ze voor bellator gaat vechten. 145 is toch het gewicht waar ze het meeste kracht heeft
