Bellator 160 - Patricio Freire vs. Benson Henderson
Patricio Freire is moving up to lightweight for a Bellator headliner against former UFC champion Benson Henderson.
Freire (25-3 MMA, 13-3 BMMA) and Henderson (23-6 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) will meet at an Aug. 26 event, presumedly Bellator 160, at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., officials confirmed with latimes.com.
According to the report, Bellator 160 will be part of a combat-sports doubleheader; the following night, the same venue hosts a Premier Boxing Champions boxing event headlined by welterweights Robert Guerrero (33-4-1) and David Peralta (25-2-1), which also airs on Spike.
Freire recently rebounded from a 2015 title loss to Daniel Straus, which halted a streak of three consecutive title wins/defenses, with a submission victory over Henry Corrales in April. The 29-year-old Brazilian is now 8-1 with six stoppages over his past nine fights.
Henderson, meanwhile, gets a second shot at his first Bellator win. The former UFC and WEC champion became one of the organization’s prized free-agent acquisitions earlier this year, but he suffered a decision loss to welterweight champ Andrey Koreshkov in his April promotional debut. Prior to that, he earned back-to-back wins over Brandon Thatch and Jorge Masvidal.
