Ex-featherweight title challenger Daniel Weichel meets Paul Redmond at Bellator 169 in Dublin

Bellator’s December debut in Ireland has another fight booked for the card, and it features a former title challenger against one of Dublin’s own.

Two-fight UFC veteran Paul Redmond (10-6 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) will make his promotional debut in front of his home fans when he meets Daniel Weichel (37-9 MMA, 6-1 BMMA) in a featherweight bout at Bellator 169. The promotion announced the new booking today.

Bellator 169, which is a joint venture with BAMMA, takes place Dec. 16 at 3Arena in Dublin. The main card airs on Spike following prelims on MMAjunkie. In the main event, Muhammed Lawal meets Satoshi Ishii in a heavyweight fight.

Redmond will make his Bellator debut looking to get back in the win column. After eight fights under the Cage Warriors banner, he debuted in the UFC in January 2015 in Stockholm, stepping in for Alan Omer on short notice. But he missed weight for the featherwieght fight and went on to lose a unanimous decision. In July 2015 in Scotland, he was knocked out by Robert Whiteford in the first round. But earlier this year, he signed with BAMMA and picked up a decision win over Chris Stringer a month ago.

Weichel has just one loss in the past four years, and it was in a featherweight title fight against then-champ Patricio Freire at Bellator 138. After winning the promotion’s Season 10 tournament with submissions of Scott Cleve and Desmond Greene and a decision over Matt Bessette, he had to wait a bit for his title shot. After a split-call upset of Pat Curran, he got his shot at Freire. But despite a good first round against the champ, “Pitbull” stopped him 32 seconds into the second with a knockout.

Since that setback, the German has rebounded with a unanimous decision win over Georgi Karakhanyan and a split-decision victory over Emmanuel Sanchez at Bellator 159 in July. (Check out the highlights of Weichel’s win over Sanchez in the video above. Below, watch the highlights of his title fight with Freire.)

The latest Bellator 169 card now includes:

    Satoshi Ishii vs. Muhammed Lawal
    James Gallagher vs. TBA
    Paul Redmond vs. Daniel Weichel
Champ Tom Duquesnoy vs. Alan Philpott – for BAMMA bantamweight title
Ronnie Mann vs. Martin Stapleton – for BAMMA vacant featherweight title

UFC vet Niklas Backstrom meets Brian Moore under BAMMA banner at Bellator 169 in Dublin

Bellator’s December debut in Ireland, a co-promotion, has a pair of new BAMMA bouts set for the lineup.

UFC veteran Niklas Backstrom (10-2) will take on Ireland’s own Brian Moore (9-4) in a featherweight fight, and Ireland’s Kiefer Crosbie (1-0) will meet England’s Conor Riordan (0-0) at welterweight. Both fights will be part of BAMMA 27, which is happening on the same bill as Bellator 169.

Bellator 169, the joint venture with BAMMA 27, takes place Dec. 16 at 3Arena in Dublin. The main card airs on Spike following prelims on MMAjunkie. In the main event, Muhammed Lawal meets Satoshi Ishii in a heavyweight fight.

Backstrom, from Sweden, fought three times for the UFC, going 1-2 before being released. In his promotional debut, he won a fight-night bonus for a first-round submission of Tom Niinimaki in Berlin at UFC Fight Night 41. But then he suffered a knockout loss to Mike Wilkinson and a decision setback to Noad Lahat. In the past year, he has gotten back on track with a pair of submission wins in Europe.

Moore, a teammate of UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor at SBG Ireland, has won back-to-back fights, as well. After a pair of losses under the Cage Warriors banner in 2013 and 2014, he rebounded with a submission of Tommy McCafferty, then a TKO of Mick Brennan at BAMMA 24 in February.

The latest Bellator 169 card now includes:
    Satoshi Ishii vs. Muhammed Lawal
    James Gallagher vs. TBA
    Paul Redmond vs. Daniel Weichel
Champ Tom Duquesnoy vs. Alan Philpott – for BAMMA bantamweight title
Ronnie Mann vs. Martin Stapleton – for BAMMA vacant featherweight title
Sean Tobin vs. Dylan Tuke – BAMMA 27 bout
Niklas Backstrom vs. Brian Moore – BAMMA 27 bout
Kiefer Crosbie vs. Conor Riordan – BAMMA 27 bout

James Gallagher vs. Anthony Taylor set as Bellator 169 co-main event in Dublin

A featherweight bout between James Gallagher and Anthony Taylor is the latest addition to December’s Bellator 169 lineup.

Bellator officials announced the bout on Thursday.

Bellator 169 takes place Dec. 16 at 3Arena in Dublin. Gallagher (4-0 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) vs. Taylor (1-1 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) co-headlines the Spike-televised main card following prelims on MMAjunkie.

Gallagher is a highly touted 145-pound prospect and a teammate of UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor. “The Strabanimal” just turned 20 and already has picked up four professional wins, three of which came as the result of a submission.

In his first Bellator appearance Gallagher was forced to fight three rounds for the first time, going the distance and besting Mike Cutting by unanimous decision at Bellator 158 in May.

Taylor, meanwhile, will attempt to pull off the upset in what would be the biggest achievement of his young career. Despite going just 1-6 as an amateur, “Pretty Boy” turned pro in December and was immediately granted an opportunity with Bellator. He fell short, though, succumbing to a first-round submission from Adin Duenas at Bellator 147.

Although the debut didn’t go his way, Taylor was granted a second chance with Bellator. He made the most of it, scoring a 27-second TKO of Victor Jones at Bellator 154 in May.

Also added to the Bellator 169 lineup is a pair of main-card bouts which will pit former Bellator featherweight title challenger Daniel Weichel (37-9 MMA, 6-1 BMMA) against UFC veteran Paul Redmond (11-6 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) as well as a women’s flyweight affair between Bruna Ellen (2-1 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) and Helen Harper (4-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA)

The latest Bellator 169 card now includes:

    MAIN CARD
    Satoshi Ishii vs. Muhammed Lawal
    James Gallagher vs. Anthony Taylor
    Paul Redmond vs. Daniel Weichel
    Bruna Ellen vs. Helen Harper

    BAMMA 27 CARD
Champ Tom Duquesnoy vs. Alan Philpott – for bantamweight title
    Walter Gahadza vs. Nathan Jones
Ronnie Mann vs. Martin Stapleton – for vacant featherweight title
    Sean Tobin vs. Dylan Tuke
    Niklas Backstrom vs. Brian Moore
    Kiefer Crosbie vs. Conor Riordan
