    Default GLORY 45: Amsterdam (30-9)

Robin van Roosmalen Defends Featherweight Championship Against No. 1 Contender Serhiy Adamchuk in The Netherlands

Sporthallen Zuid Hosts GLORY 45 Amsterdam / GLORY 45 SuperFight Series on Sept. 30Tickets on sale this Friday, July 21 at 6 p.m. CEST via tickets.glorykickboxing.com The world’s premier kickboxing league brings featherweight fireworks and former champions to the Netherlands this fall, as Sporthallen Zuid hosts GLORY 45 Amsterdam and GLORY 45 SuperFight Series on Saturday, Sept. 30.
The promotion has held three previous events in the Netherlands: GLORY 26 (Dec. 2015), GLORY 31 (June 2016) and GLORY 41 (May 2017). GLORY 45 will mark the organization’s return to Amsterdam after a visit to Den Bosch earlier this year.

Headlining GLORY 45 Amsterdam is one of the most decorated fighters on the GLORY roster, reigning featherweight and former lightweight world champion Robin "Pokerface" van Roosmalen (38-7, 21 KO, fighting out of the Netherlands).

The Dutch champion will defend his featherweight title against Ukrainian-born No. 1 contender Serhiy Adamchuk (35-8, 14 KO, fighting out of the Netherlands), who impressively defeated Dylan Salvador at GLORY 42 Paris in June.

[YouTube Video] Serhiy Adamchuk calls out Robin van Roosmalen in post-fight interview

Van Roosmalen is the only GLORY fighter to capture a championship belt in two weight classes, going 3-0 since dropping down to featherweight, while Adamchuk has established himself as a perennial contender, defeating the likes of Mosab Amrani, Gabriel Varga and Marat Grigorian to amass a 7-3 record with the organization.

Long-standing welterweight kingpin Nieky "The Natural" Holzken (90-13, 46 KO, fighting out of the Netherlands), ranked No. 4, will rematch with Yoann Kongolo (65-9, 46 KO, fighting out Switzerland), ranked No. 2, in the GLORY 45 Amsterdam co-headline bout.

The pair met previously at GLORY 29 Copenhagen in a back-and-forth “Fight of the Year” contender, with Holzken winning by unanimous decision.

In a career spanning 15 years, Holzken has crafted a legendary resume, suffering only two defeats since the start of 2013, both to current GLORY welterweight world champion Cédric Doumbé. Kongolo, a former welterweight title challenger himself, has won four of his last five bouts, including three victories already in 2017.

GLORY 45 Amsterdam will also feature a one-night, four-man light heavyweight contender tournament in order to identify the division’s top challengers.

In the first of two semifinal match-ups, 19-year-old Dutch-Moroccan Imad “The Problem Child” Hadar (19-1, 7 KO, fighting out of the Netherlands) looks to bounce back after suffering his first defeat, as he takes on powerful American Manny Mancha (5-2, 4 KO, fighting out of the United States), currently ranked No. 8.

Veteran light heavyweight Michael “Dreamcrusher” Duut (40-8, 17 KO, fighting out of the Netherlands) will fight in the other tournament semifinal bout against an opponent to be named later.

The complete five-fight card for GLORY 45 Amsterdam can be found below:

Featherweight Title Headline Bout: Robin van Roosmalen vs. Serhiy Adamchuk
Light Heavyweight Tournament Final Bout: Winner of Bout A vs. Winner of Bout B
Welterweight Co-headline Bout: Nieky Holzken vs. Yoann Kongolo
Light Heavyweight Tournament Semifinal Bout B: Imad Hadar vs. Manny Mancha
Light Heavyweight Tournament Semifinal Bout A: Michael Duut vs. TBA

Before GLORY 45 Amsterdam, GLORY 45 SuperFight Series showcases some of GLORY’s up-and-coming talent.

Former GLORY middleweight world champion, now No. 1 contender Jason “Psycho” Wilnis (30-7-1, 8 KO, fighting out of the Netherlands) begins his climb back to the belt in a showdown with 25-year-old Dutch-Tunisian Yousri Belgaroui (22-3, 10 KO, fighting out of the Netherlands), standing right behind Wilnis at No. 2 in the division.

A pair of 22-year-old featherweights square off when Zakaria Zouggary (29-3-1, 15 KO, fighting out of the Netherlands) meets Massaro “The Project” Glunder (30-9-4, fighting out of the Netherlands), who represents the Moluccan Republic. Zouggary made his GLORY debut in May, defeating Yetkin Ozkul. In June, Glunder entered the GLORY 42 Paris lightweight contender tournament on short notice, upsetting prohibitive favorite Niclas Larsen in the first round before being narrowly edged by teammate Christian Baya in the tournament final.

Undefeated since joining the organization in December, 19-year-old Dutch-Moroccan lightweight Tyjani “The Wonderboy” Beztati (13-1, 5 KO, fighting out of the Netherlands) will attempt to keep his winning streak alive against 22-year-old Yodkhunpon "Muu" Sitmonchai (89-28-1, 54 KO, fighting out of Thailand).

Representing Aruba, Hoorn-native Eyevan "Mister Cool" Danenberg (23-5, 11 KO, fighting out of the Netherlands) welcomes Brazilian newcomer Wellington Uega to GLORY for a welterweight tilt.

The current fight card for GLORY 45 SuperFight Series can be found below:

Middleweight Bout: Jason Wilnis vs. Yousri Belgaroui
Featherweight Bout: Zakaria Zouggary vs. Massaro Glunder
Lightweight Bout: Tyjani Beztati vs. Yodkhunpon Sitmonchai
Welterweight Bout: Eyevan Danenberg vs. Wellington Uega

An additional bout is expected to be added to the GLORY 45 SuperFight Series card.

Tickets for GLORY 45 Amsterdam and GLORY 45 SuperFight Series go on sale this Friday, July 21 at 6 p.m. CEST. Tickets will be available for online purchase at tickets.glorykickboxing.com.

    Mooie partijen.

Jammer, groot talent.

An injury suffered during training has forced former welterweight champion Nieky Holzken out of the bout against Alim Nabiyev at GLORY 45 Amsterdam on Saturday, Sept. 30.

Gerges and Brestovac square off for first time in GLORY 45 co-main

    Saturday, Sep 16 2017 by John O'Regan
Hesdy Gerges hasn't had the kind of competition this year that he would have wanted. Two cancelled fights with Chi Lewis-Parry meant that thus far, his only fight of 2017 was a decision win over Tomas Hron at GLORY 41 HOLLAND in May.

Hron’s conservative fighting style meant Gerges couldn’t put on the kind of fight that he likes to, but at GLORY 45 AMSTERDAM later this month he will be able to do that because he is fighting Mladen Brestovac.

The tall, powerful Brestovac is a Croatian southpaw who, like his countryman and training partner Mirko ‘CroCop’, is deadly with the left kick and always looking to finish his fights inside the distance.

Brestovac too has had a slower 2017 than he would have liked. He defended the heavyweight title of Croatian promotion FFC in April but hasn’t competed since. This fight will be his first GLORY bout of the year.

It means that both of these heavyweights are entering the ring extremely hungry to make an impression with their performance, get the win and remind fellow GLORY heavyweights of their presence.

Gerges is the higher ranked of the two, currently occupying the #6 slot, while Brestovac sits just inside the top ten at #9. A win for Brestovac would move him up the ranking and Gerges risks a slide in position if he cannot secure the win for himself.

On paper the two are quite evenly matched: Brestovac is, for a change, the slightly shorter fighter at 6’5” (198cm) versus 6’6” (200cm) for Gerges, though he does tend to weigh a little more than Gerges on fight night. Neither differential is likely to be of any significance on fight night.

Both have faced #1-ranked Benjamin Adegbuyi in GLORY and suffered losses on both occasions. Gerges took Adegbuyi to decision twice while Brestovac was stopped on the first occasion and went the distance on the second.

Unusually for fighters of this level in this weight class, this will be the first time that the two have fought. A first-time encounter between seasoned professional heavyweights is always an interesting event and, as with any heavyweight encounter, things can end in an instant.

Fighting out of Amsterdam, representing Tunisia, Yousri Belgaroui details his upbringing and love for fighting. Now, he faces his toughest challenge yet... Jason Wilnis at GLORY 45 SuperFight Series on September 30th!

Redemption, recognition are key themes for GLORY 45 tournament fighters

    Wednesday, Sep 20 2017 by John O'Regan
A four-man Light-Heavyweight Contender Tournament forms the centerpiece of the GLORY 45 AMSTERDAM card taking place Saturday, September 30 at the Sporthallen Zuid in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

The starting grid sees four heavy hitters line up to battle it out over two stages in one night until only one of them is left standing to claim the tournament trophy.

In the first of the semi-final bouts, rising young talent Imad “The Problem Child” Hadar (19-1, 7 KO’s) of the Netherlands faces California’s Manny Mancha (5-2, 4 KO’s).

In the second semi-final, Michael “Dreamcrusher” Duut (40-8, 17 KO’s) faces Italian newcomer Giorgio Dragos (11-4, 7 KO’s). The two semi-final winners will then square off later that evening in the tournament final.

Duut likely starts as tournament favorite due to his wealth of experience relative to the other participants, but is entering the competition in search of redemption following a disqualification loss in his last outing.

His fight with Mourad Bouzidi was stopped by the referee at GLORY 41 HOLLAND after Duut was issued with three warnings for stalling and excessive clinching.

Duut had gone into that fight off the back of a ‘Fight of the Year 2017’ win over Danyo Ilunga. It is that award-winning form which he looks to bring to the tournament in Amsterdam.

Hadar too is coming off a loss, in his case a stoppage in his GLORY 40 debut at the hands of French veteran Freddy Kemayo. That loss snapped the win streak which brought the rising young talent into GLORY and now he’s looking to put it behind him and ascend the rankings by winning the tournament.

Mancha sports a 2-0 record in GLORY but hasn't been active in the organization since his GLORY 30 win over Warren Thompson in Los Angeles early last year. Now he’s looking to come back with a bang and fly the Stars n’ Stripes in the light-heavyweight division.

Dragos is a newcomer to GLORY and looking to make an impression on his debut. There are few tougher ways to make your debut for GLORY than in one of the four-man tournaments, but there’s also no better way to make an impact than winning one.

His list of accomplishments this year includes winning the WKN European Championship and the WKN International Championship. He is ranked #1 in Italy at his weight and comes from the same management stable as Giorgio Petrosyan.

Coach: “Robin van Roosmalen is tough but Serhiy Adamchuk doesn’t back down”

    Thursday, Sep 21 2017 by John O'Regan
“It’s gonna be a tough fight, everyone will get their money’s worth. We all know Robin is a tough cookie and Serhiy doesn’t back down,” says Mike Passenier, head coach of Amsterdam institution Mike’s Gym and trainer of Serhiy Adamchuk (35-8).

Former featherweight champion Adamchuk is challenging current featherweight champion Robin van Roosmalen (38-7) for the belt in the GLORY 45 AMSTERDAM main event. The straight-talking Passenier says fans can expect a war.

“We will be more aggressive because that’s the only way to win and that’s the way it should be. I think more fighters should do that. Once you are on this stage, you should be showing everything that you have,” he says.

“In my opinion, it’s either Robin winning by KO or us winning by points. I don’t see Robin being KO’d. He used to fight at 70kgs and not get KO’d so I can’t see him fighting at 65kg and getting KO’d. It may be that he has some problems making weight though.”

Adamchuk first found his way to the GLORY championship by using his highly creative fighting intelligence to bait his opponents into traps and counter-attack them while avoiding damage. It was a very educated stye but one which sometimes left fans wanting to see more energy.

Between fights, Passenier was working with Adamchuk on bringing out the attacking strengths that he knew the Ukranian possessed. The results of those efforts were made clear at the recent GLORY 42 PARIS event when Adamchuk blitzed Dylan Salvador and took a clear decision win over him.

According to Passenier, the changes wrought in Adamchuk have not been so much technical as psychological: he has simply been encouraging him to “be the best version of Serhiy Adamchuk that you can be.”

“It’s not that he wasn’t already doing well, but sometimes you need to go deeper, find more. You saw that in his last fight, against Dylan Salvador in Paris,” he says.

Of course, it’s no coincidence that the change also brings Adamchu closer in line with the Mike’s Gym house style. Fighters from the gym embrace the ideals of ancient Sparta - “Come home with your shield, or else on it” - and are almost always in crowd-pleasing wars.

“Look, it’s not just about winning or losing the fight. Sometimes a guy can win a fight but really he’s lost in a bigger sense, or lose the fight but win in a bigger way. Because the only judges who really matter are the fans who are paying their money to see you fight,” says Passenier.

“There is no secret to our fighting style. We like to fight with guys who want to fight and we don’t like to fight with guys who don’t want to fight. One thing for sure you can say about Robin is that he comes to fight. So that’s how I know this will be a good fight next week.”

GLORY 45 AMSTERDAM takes place on Saturday, September 30 at the Sporthallen Zuid in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

GLORY 45 Amsterdam is set to air live on ESPN3 on Saturday, September 30th, 2017 at 3:30pm Eastern time (ET) and replay on ESPN2 on Sunday, October 1st, 2017 at 11pm ET.

‘Big Mike’ on “unusual” Massaro Glunder and "how to beat a bully"

    Friday, Sep 22 2017 by John O'Regan

Mike Passenier is going be a busy man next Saturday.

The eponymous Mike’s Gym is located in north Amsterdam and the team has five fighters on the GLORY 45 AMSTERDAM card. It’s going to be a crowded dressing room and a non-stop night for the head coach.

“It’s my home town - I have to represent, I have to be busy!” He booms, unfazed at the prospect of guiding five fighters through key career bouts in one night.

One of them - Serhiy Adamchuk - is fighting for a world title, another - Yousri Belgaroui - is fighting for a title shot and the other three are looking for breakout performances which will push their names towards the title shot conversation.

Of those three fights, it is the featherweight encounter between Massaro Glunder and Zakarari Zougarry which is attracting the most interest from fans and fight media. Glunder stepped up on 48 hours notice at GLORY 42 PARIS to enter the Lightweight Contender Tournament and promptly stopped tournament favorite Niclas Larsen in the semi-final.

Zougarry’s debut at GLORY 41 earlier this year was also a remarkable performance. His fight with the veteran Yetkin Ozkul immediately found itself entered into the ‘Fight of the Year’ contender conversation, despite it being midsummer at the time.

Zougarry fights out of Team Souwer under K-1 MAX champion Andy Souwer and, by coincidence, Glunder also fought Souwer under short notice this year, also on short notice, only under MMA rules rather than kickboxing.

“They are both very good fighters and there is a real clash of styles here. They have very different styles but also very unique styles, you don’t really see other fighters who do the same as they do. Also it’s Amsterdam versus Rotterdam, which adds a little something to it,” says Passenier.

“Massaro is unusual. He was KO’ing people at 75 kilos, 70 kilos - he is a born fighter. At 65 kilos he has that same power. He’s a born puncher. In his career he has taken a lot of short-notice fights but that’s because he is always in shape and ready to go. He is always in the gym and he does exactly what he is told to do when he is in there.

“So that’s why he was able to take advantage of that opportunity to fight Niclas Larsen in the lightweight tournament and then go in there and KO him. And actually two weeks before that, we were at another show and somebody dropped out and he accepted to fight Andy Souwer in a cage under MMA rules!

“After his GLORY debut, Massaro got a little bit more hungry than he was before, a little bit more focused. It’s a good opportunity for him. He’s already gotten better since that win over Larsen.
Zougarry is also very good and also comes to fight. It’s going to be good.”

Another encounter Passenier expects to be a good one is when Belgaroui faces off with Wilnis.

“It’s two guys who come to fight, not to play games. We already fought against Jason two times already, with Sahak Parparyan, and won both of those fights. So I feel like we know what the key to victory is,” he says.

“The tactic for Yousri I think is to control distance and to switch things up during the fight. Jason bullies people in fights, he likes to be the bully. But what bullies don’t like is to be bullied back. He likes to go forward, not backward. So I think the key is to make him back up.”
His final two fighters on the card are Stoyan Koprivlenski, who opens the Superfight Series in a fight with Kevin Hessling, and Mike Sprangh, who headlines the local undercard in a fight against Kevin van Heeckeren, a teammate of Jason Wilnis’ at Team Colosseum.

“Stoyan took this fight a week ago but he’s been training hard and he’s ready. We’ve fought Hessling before - Massaro Glunder knocked him out with a high kick. He’s not a bad fighter, good leg kicks, but that won’t be a problem for us in this fight,” says Passenier.

“Mike Sprangh, this is a guy you really have to watch out for. This guy is a genuine kickboxer. Some guys are brawlers, some are athletes, some are punchers, kickers, whatever - this guy is a born kickboxer. He is a natural. Every problem he is faced with in the ring, he finds a kickboxing answer for it.

“He doesn’t even look like a kickboxer, he’s a nice kid. Recently we were in Romania, him and another of my guys were fighting, and when I got to the hotel with them the local promoters were like ‘oh, where are your fighters?’ I said ‘Here, behind me!’ They didn’t even realize they were fighters. GLORY 45 AMSTERDAM takes place Saturday, September 30 at the Sporthallen Zuid in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Tickets are on sale now via tickets.glorykickboxing.com.
