TAKIMOTO: Makoto Takimoto (Pictures) won the gold medal in the 81-kilogram division in judo at the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney, Australia. Considered a dark horse for the medal due to his poor performance in the Asian Judo Championships earlier that year, Takimoto pulled off upset wins over Alvaro Paseyro of Uruguay by yusei-gachi (decision), Gaston Garcia of Argentina by ippon (full point) and Ruslan Seilkhanov of Kazakstan by ippon (full point).

The medal round was a repeat of the 1995 Asian Judo Championships final as Cho In-chul of South Korea fell to Takimoto via yusei-gachi (decision). Though given a 30 percent chance of winning the medal by judo pundits, the four-time Kodokan Cup winner was highly aggressive and took the win over the heavily favored Cho.

Makoto was molded for MMA by Yoshida, Kosai, Watanabe and boxing coach Riki Onodera. Other than his judo prowess, Takimoto had no other recognized martial arts combat experience leading up to his appearance in the 2004 New Year’s Eve show. And recruiting Takimoto to take part the PFC NYE event was fellow gold medalist and 2000 Olympics participant Hidehiko Yoshida (Pictures).

Yoshida has emerged as a huge mover and shaker in Japan, using his position to bring Takimoto on board despite the objections of “the powers that be� in judo politics. In his MMA debut, Makoto battled “Sentoryu� Henry Miller (Pictures) of Takada Dojo at last New Year’s Eve and beat him by unanimous decision.

He went on to face former RINGS champion Kiyoshi Tamura (Pictures) in Critical Countdown 2005. He put in a solid effort and went the distance, losing by decision. At PRIDE 30 Takimoto faced Korean judoka Dong Sik Yoon (Pictures). It was a highly anticipated match in Japan and Takimoto came out on top, winning a unanimous decision.

Takimoto’s most recent bout was a match with Pancrase hero Sanae Kikuta (Pictures). Like all of his previous battles, this bout went the distance with Kikuta taking the decision at PRIDE Shockwave 2005. He now carries a record of 2-2 in MMA.

MOUSASI: Boxer Gerard Mousasi trains as part of Jurojin Gym in Holland with “TJ� Tayari Alberga, Haik Soukiasian, brothers Can Sahinbas and Goksel Sahinbas and Gerard’s own brother Gewik.

Gerard made the Dutch Junior National Boxing Team at 20 years old. He has used his superior skills to stop eight opponents with strikes and finished all but one in the first round. The Armenian striker carries a nearly perfect 12-1 record in MMA and has been fighting since 2003.

Mousasi made his debut at the 2 Hot 2 Handle Open Team Mixfight Championships and defeated Daniel Spek in the first round. He continued to fight in smaller Dutch shows in ’03 (beat “Capixu� Ferreira from BTT and Niko Puhakka) and ’04 before making his M-1 debut at the MFC International Fight Night with a submission win over Red Devil Erik Oganov.

He suffered his first and only loss to Lithuanian striker Petras Morkevicius at Fight Festival 13 when he was armbarred in the second round. Mousasi went 6-1 in ’05 including wins in RINGS Bushido Ireland, the Bushido Europe “Rotterdam Rumble� show (dealt Stefan Klever his only loss). He made his DEEP debut against Tsuyoshi Kuihara and KO’d the Team Roken fighter with a knee to the head. Both of his fights in 2006 have ended with a win using strikes.

MY PICK: Mousasi. Takimoto signed up to get the first serious beating of his Pride career. This one will not go the distance. Either Mousasi will make a mistake and get submitted or he will pound Takimoto senseless. Mousasi with strikes in the first round.
