22/06/09 - UFC 'returning to Germany in April 2010'
The UFC may return to Germany in April 2010 as one of the country's leading arenas has apparently expressed interest in holding an event.
Marek Lieberberg, who served as co-promoter for UFC 99 in Cologne last week, says the negative reaction of much of the German press has not and will not hamper the organisation's expansion into the country.
"I believe that in April 2010, a second mixed martial arts event will be held at the [König-Pilsener] arena in Oberhausen," he said recently. "They have expressed an interest. "
Oberhausen is located at the western edge of Germany and is very close to the borders with Holland and Belgium.
With a population of around 220,000 it is far smaller than Cologne, which is home to approximately one million people.
But the König-Pilsener Arena seats 13,000 and the city itself is well-positioned to draw fans from countries outside Germany.
UFC 99 (pictured) attracted fans from Croatia, Spain, the UK, France and the Netherlands as UFC aficionados drove from all over mainland Europe to reach the event.
