Carlos Meza, from Barranquilla, Columbia, has passed away after being knocked out on Friday. He was challenging for the WBC Latin bantamweight title when he suffered a 12th round knockout. Meza had three skull fractures and fluid in the brain. He went into a coma and never regained consciousness.
The 26 year old Meza entered the fight with an 8-0 record. He was matched up with Ricardo Córdoba who is currently 23-0. They met at the Arena Panama Al Brown in Colon City, Panama. The fight was stopped 52 seconds into the final round. Meza was then rushed to Santo Tomás Hospital. He went into surgery on Saturday to ease the swelling. He was declared deceased on Tuesday.
"I don't understand what happened," said his wife Luz Mery Torres. "He was well prepared."
IBF flyweight champion and fellow Columbian boxer Irene Pacheco said, "Carlos always liked close-in fights and he was devoted to his wife and two children."
We at Boxing-Central send our condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Meza.
