If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

Matchmaker's Notes: Superfight Series 41 Headline Fights

    Published on May 17, 2017
This Saturday, May 20 we are in the city of Den Bosch for GLORY 41 HOLLAND. Den Bosch is about an hour to the south of Amsterdam and the surrounding area is home to both Rico Verhoeven and Robin van Roosmalen, both of whom are fighting on this event.
This event is unusual in that we are reversing the running order, so the SUPERFIGHT SERIES card takes place after the GLORY 41 numbered card. We're doing that because Rico and Van Roosmalen are on the Superfight Series card and airing their fights later in the evening aids more of our worldwide fanbase who are watching via our partners at UFC Fight Pass.
It's no secret that Verhoeven has struggled to find challengers lately; he's dominating the division and we also have a lot of guys injured right now. He was supposed to face Jamal Ben Saddik on this card but Ben Saddik went on vacation after his win at GLORY 39 and managed to fall off his motorbike and injure himself, so he had to pull out.
We had to find a new challenger for Rico for this card but it wasn't easy. Benjamin Adegbuyi was not available and we saw them fight twice now already so it wasn't that interesting of a prospect anyway. Jahfar Wilnis has a lung embolism, he's not well, Hesdy Gerges is on a losing streak, Ismael Londt has a terrible shoulder injury, really bad, he is out until the end of the year.
Another fighter we reached out to was Andre Gerasimchuk, the most recent fighter to beat Rico, but he is at light-heavyweight right now. Then the name of Ismael Lazaar came up. He is the heavyweight champion of ENFUSION, which is the top domestic league in the Netherlands. The second he got offered the fight he said yes. Instantly, no hesitation.
Lazaar really wants to test himself against Rico, because Rico is indisputably the best heavyweight in the world right now. A win for Lazaar would be huge for his career and his reputation. He also comes from the same area that this event is taking place in, as does Rico, so there is something of a local derby of heavyweight champions here.
It's a superfight not a title fight, although it is over five rounds. There is no title on the line but of course there is a lot of stake for both fighters, so it's a very important fight. And Lazaar has a really dangerous level of power in his hands, he's very deceptive. Like Rico said in the pre-fight press conference, to look at him he doesn't look athletic at all, but he is really explosive and dynamic.
For sure he is not an opponent that Rico can afford to take lightly. Lazaar is a fighter who can end a contest in an instant. Look at his highlight reel – when he knocks people out, they are really knocked out. He is dangerous in every second of every round and Rico has to maintain full focus throughout: if he lets his concentration lapse for a moment, that's when Lazaar can seize the day.
Another championship-level fighter on this card is Robin van Roosmalen. He is facing Petchpanomrung and this fight is for the vacant featherweight title, Petchpanomrung having won the four-man Featherweight Contender Tournament at GLORY 39 BRUSSELS.
A lot of my personal history involves Thailand, where my student and son Ramon Dekkers made his legend, so for me it is always a pleasure to see top-level Thai fighters come to GLORY. Petchpanomrung is a rising star in the division and has a superb left kick, but may struggle with the size difference here.
Roosmalen is big for this weight and powerful, whereas Petchpanomrung might really be better suited to a weight class lower. In his favor is his great timing and his outstanding left kick, which has scored him three wins from three fights in GLORY. On the other hand, Roosmalen has experience facing southpaw Thai fighters – Sitthichai is a bigger, stronger version of Petchpanomrung.
Roosmalen is very high level, he has looked great at this weight. Realistically I would expect him to take his belt back in this fight. He lost it in January when he missed weight against Matt Embree. It would be special for him to win it back in Den Bosch, his home city.
GLORY 41 SUPERFIGHT SERIES starts at 9.30pm Netherlands time, 3.30pm New York time, 7.30pm UK time and airs live worldwide on UFC Fight Pass.

    Matchmaker's Notes: GLORY 41 HOLLAND

    Published on May 16, 2017
Hesdy Gerges and Chi Lewis-Parry were supposed to be headlining this card in a showdown between two guys who started out showing mutual respect but quickly fell out and got into a personal dispute.
At GLORY 39 BRUSSELS their fight was cancelled while both fighters were backstage, with illness cited as the cause. Shortly after the cancellation was announced, an argument started between them in full view of the arena crowd and they had to be separated.
Comments were then made by both fighters online as they were rematched for this card. But a week ago Lewis-Parry pulled out with an injured hand and it took us until today to confirm a replacement.
Tomas Hron is from the Czech Republic but lately has been attached to the Coliseum Gym in the Netherlands, home of the Wilnis brothers. He has wins over a number of current and former GLORY fighters, including Errol Zimmerman, Andrei Stoica, Catalin Morosanu and actually Jahfar Wilnis as well.
He's used to fighting top names and he is a former training partner of Mirko CroCop also, so the top level is nothing new to him. Gerges of course is disappointed to not be fighting Lewis-Parry but he turns his attention now to getting a win and ending his recent run of losses; it's a tough prospect for Hron on this short notice but maybe he can surprise Gerges.
The centerpiece of this GLORY 41 HOLLAND card is a four-man Heavyweight Contender Tournament. Usually the winner of such a tournament is awarded a title shot but in this particular instance the tournament line-up consists largely of newcomers and so we are going to have the winner face another top-ranked opponent later in the year and he will need to win that to secure his shot.
Anderson 'Braddock' Silva is a familiar name to our fans and he's by far the most experienced fighter in the tournament. He has a very complete set of skills and he showcased that in his last fight, when he faced Benjamin Adegbuyi in Chicago. He lost a decision in the extra round after putting on a great display. Some people felt he won that fight actually, it could have gone either way. On the basis of his recent performances for me he is a guy who is still up there despite the results.
D'Angelo Marshall has had one fight for GLORY; the other two tournament fighters are new to GLORY. One thing which is always interesting to look at with new fighters is how they perform on the big platform that we represent.
Marshall did well in Los Angeles in January against Guto Inocente; he lost a decision in an extra round but it was a close fight. It's very possible he still needs to get used to being in GLORY, 'big show' nerves can be a thing. He's coming out of Mousid Gym and that's a place which has produced some great fighters over the years.
Mohamed Abdallah is from Germany but fighting out of Mike's Gym in Amsterdam. He's a big young guy, 22 years of age. I am curious to see what he has got. He's experienced at a national level but here we are at the top international level.
Stoforidis earns himself the distinction of becoming GLORY's first Greek fighter. He's the smallest of the four fighters in the tournament but he has done well on his way to joining us, he has stopped a lot of opponents. We had him on the radar last year actually to fight Hesdy Gerges but that fell through.
He's facing Silva in the semi-finals and while he clearly looks up to him, he can win that fight so long as everything is good between his ears and he does not become starstruck. He needs to not show Silva too much respect; he has got nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Even though Silva is the most experienced by far and has a ton of fights at the very top level, I don't want to make any prediction about the results in this tournament. I think it's very open and the fighters who are their best on the day will win.
Chenglong Zhang is one of a wave of Chinese fighters coming through this year. Thus far I feel like the Chinese have held their own and looked evenly-matched in their fights. It's worth bearing in mind that for a lot of Chinese fighters they are moving from their native SanDa system into our system of kickboxing and there are some subtle but important differences.
On the last show Yuhang Xie had a good fight with Chris Mauceri. He looked like he was in trouble in the first round but then he suddenly came awake and took over in the last round. He showed a real fighting spirit - both guys did, actually. I really enjoyed that fight from ringside.
Wilson Mendes Sanches trains in Rotterdam with Ismael Londt's coach. He is high speed, a very active guy. Both him and Zhang are very fast and I expect to see a constant exchange of techniques from them. Zhang has more experience fighting on the big stage in China and Asia, so maybe a slight psychological advantage for him there.
GLORY 41 HOLLAND takes place this Saturday, May 20 at the Brabanthallen in Den Bosch, Holland. Also appearing are Rico Verhoeven and Robin van Roosmalen, who will be fighting to regain the featherweight title when he faces Thai talent Petchpanomrung.

GLORY is back in Holland this weekend for GLORY 41 HOLLAND and GLORY SUPERFIGHT SERIES 41, two cards in one night, as always.
Headlining the Superfight Series card are two big fights: Rico Verhoeven vs Ismael Lazaar in a heavyweight superfight of champions and Robin van Roosmalen against Petchpanomrung for the vacant featherweight championship.
I've discussed those fights separately. Here I want to take a look at the other fights from the Superfight Series card, which airs live worldwide on UFC FIGHT PASS and is also carried by numerous international television partners.
Murthel Groenhart is a top level fighters, a real contender, strong and well-rounded with plenty of power and a proven pedigree. He wanted a title shot in this fight after losing so closely in his last title challenge and then smashing Thongchai in Chicago earlier this year, but unfortunately we had to disappoint him.
He was to face Harut Grigorian on this card but Harut suffered a broken toe and had to pull out. I saw that Murthel made some comments about that but actually it wasn't Harut who wanted to pull out, it was his trainer. He told him that Murthel is not an easy opponent and not somebody you want to face at less than 100%. Harut was still trying to take the fight and still trying to train; I heard he turned up at the gym a few days after the injury and they actually locked the door on him and shouted at him to go home!
It wasn't so easy finding someone who wanted to step up and face Murthel on short notice but Alan Scheinson was ready and said he wanted the challenge. He's had three weeks to prepare so not the shortest, but still not as much as Murthel. He has fought at a high level, not so high as the level Murthel has been competing at, but he's looking to try and get the job done and make a big jump in the rankings. Personally I think it's going to be hard for him to achieve that, but we will see.
In the light-heavyweight division we have an interesting clash between Michael Duut and Mourad Bouzidi, two experienced guys and kind of a derby element here as they are both from the Netherlands.
Duut is coming off the Fight of the Year 2017 with Danyo Ilunga in his last GLORY outing. Since he switched to training with Melvin Manhoef I think we are seeing some really good explosive fighting style from him and this fight could be another example.
Bouzidi's last fight was when he faced Zack Mwekassa for the interim light-heavyweight championship at GLORY 31 AMSTERDAM last year. Mwekassa stopped him and ended his four-fight win streak at that point but he hasn't broken his spirit.
Lightweight prospect Tyjani Beztati fought at GLORY 39 BRUSSELS and his opponent Youseff Assouik fought at GLORY 40 COPENHAGEN so it's a quick turnaround for both these fighters but they are both young and fit, coming off comfortable wins, so it's easy for them.
Beztati is a bright new talent fighting out of Team Coliseum, where he trains with guys like the Wilnis brothers. Assouik was fighting for a GLORY contract in Copenhagen and he stepped up foor it, he totally eliminated the opponent's game and now we give him the chance to perform against a ranked fighter in the Netherlands.
We've told the winner of this fight he will face Niclas Larsen in the semi-finals of the GLORY 42 PARIS Lightweight Contender Tournament next month, so let's see which one of them earns the slot. Expect a hard-fought battle.
Opening the card is a featherweight fight between Zakaria Zouggary and Yetkin Ozkul. This is a clash between young newcomer and older veteran. Zougarry is the up and comer, he's 22 and he has showcased a powerful knockout style while fighting in China so we are happy to sign him. He was about to sign a long-term contract over there but he was convinced to sign with us instead.
Ozkul is of Turkish extraction but based in France. We are gearing up to do more shows over there and even though he is a bit older we can see him taking a run in GLORY, so we will see him again after this fight for sure.
Zuggary has already talked about how he wants to fight Van Roosmalen but that's some fights away yet. He will have to get some wins under his belt, starting with this fight, before he gets the championship level fights.
GLORY 41 SUPERFIGHT SERIES starts at 9.30pm Netherlands time, 3.30pm New York time, 7.30pm UK time and airs live worldwide on UFC Fight Pass.
